Nintendo Is Doing Their Best Star Trek Impersonation…

That’s right, the creators of Super Mario are looking to “boldly go” where no Nintendo console has gone before, and based on the facts … we don’t blame them.

In an Interview with Bloomberg News George Harrison, marketing chief at Nintendo of America said they plan on having the Wii sell 35 million units by 2012. If these numbers were true Nintendo would be only a few million units shy of breaking Sony’s record breaking mark of 38.5 million Playstation 2’s sold worldwide.

If Nintendo does reach these goals it all but assures they will emerge victorious in the next generation console war. Right now the Wii has the momentum going for it. Since its releases in America on November 21, 2007, Nintendo has sold more then 2.5 million units while the Xbox 360 and PS3 have lag behind … Sony only selling a dismal 1.3 units!

Can Nintendo truly do it? Right now it’s hard for anyone to answer, even them, but how can you doubt them? Numbers don’t lie.

In studying the Japanese market, it is quite obvious that the Xbox 360 just isn’t selling well with a hair over 330,000 units sold. With 790,000 units making their way off shelves, the PS3 is doing a little better. All that said, the Wii is doing phenomenal in every market with nearly 8 million units sold worldwide to date.

If this trend continues there is a possibility that Nintendo could sell even more than just their goal. However, there are some concerns, mainly regarding the systems power in comparison to the Xbox 360 and PS3. To those who say “Graphics don’t matter”… taking into consideration the Wii’s unique game play experience, we are tempted to agree. However with the amount of money being spent to develop titles like Grand Theft Auto 4, Halo 3, and Metal Gear 4, it does make us wonder whether or not Nintendo can continue to outsell its counterparts at its blistering current pace.

In closing, we realize that the Wii controller is revolutionary, but we still question whether or not Nintendo’s commitment to a superior game play experience is enough to keep the consumers lining the doors without the big name 3rd party games.

Today’s gamers expect and deserve a living, breathing, jaw dropping experience from a title they dish out sixty bucks for, which is something that many can agree the Wii only half delivers.
