EA Sports announced a new feature this year for Tiger Woods 2008 that would allow gamers to upload a picture of themselves and use it to create an in game character that they said would not only look like them, it would actually be them.

Sounds great — unfortunately gamers arrived home with their $60 EA purchase only to find that the server was down. In its place was a sorry message that instructed gamers to move forward with their gameplay and upload their photo at a later date.EA Forums have been getting hit hard by those who dished out the money for the game, several claiming that they had reported the video game giant to the better business bureau.

Do they have a right to be upset? Damn straight they do. I spent several years working in the dot com industry for companies whose day to day bottom line depended on servers being up and running. Their IT Departments where tasked with creating plans for every possible scenario that may happen.

Knowing this makes it hard for me to forgive a company like EA who should have anticipated and better prepared for the response. Their “sorry” is a sorry excuse — if gamers paid them with IOU payments instead of cold hard earned cash this issue would have been resolved already.

Been a week still getting the same sorry when I log in. I don’t blame anyone for reporting them to the BBB.
