Bungie Defends Graphics In Halo 3 - Photo Realism Overrated?
by Drake Hess on September 26, 2007 at 1:42 pm

Bungie Studio’s Halo 3 has only been out for a few days now and the complaints are already starting to come in. The most recent piece of critisism hails from the UK and calls the game “Halo 2 in HD”. Well, as someone that has watched NFL football for years, many of which were before the release of HD, I can say that HD makes a world of difference.
That said the comment doesn’t make sense, but I understand where they are trying to go with it. If Bungie was trying to go for the photo realistic look then obviously they failed, however in a recent interview with Pro-G at London’s Waterloo IMAX Cinema, Bungie Studios Cinematic Designer, Lee Wilson made the following statement…
“It’s completely immersive. The art direction is immaculate. It’s not trying to be incredibly photo realistic or painting this grimy world. It’s vibrant and it’s fun and it’s accessible.”
I once had a professor in art school who believed that it was every artists responsibility to add something unique to their work that made it stand out. He stated that if you wanted something to look just as it does in reality then why bother creating it by hand, simply take a picture.
The overall tone of the interview was that they are very happy with the game. For the full interview click here.
