$250 Best Buy Gift Card Giveaway
by Chad Lakkis on October 11, 2007 at 1:30 pm

We here at ripten are celebrating our four month anniversary this week and in honor of that, we are giving away a $250.00 gift card to one lucky reader. No purchase necessary, all you have to do is leave a comment below letting us know what you think of the site and how we can better serve your needs as a gamer. We will then randomly pick one comment on October 31st, 2007 and contact the winner via email. For this reason, you must list a valid email to win. The giveaway begins today and officially ends at midnight EST on October 30th, 2007.
We know there are tons of videogame sites on the web, and we appreciate our readers support. Our goal since day one has been to inform as well as entertain, from our original illustrated console characters, to our sometimes misunderstood attempts to poke fun at an industry we all love. While we believe that news should be accurate, reporting it doesn’t have to be boring and unopinionated. If we as gamers can’t laugh at ourselves then what’s the point.
Lastly, and you don’t have to do this to enter, but we are asking our readers to please digg this story (button found at the bottom) and help us make more gamers aware of ripten.com. We appreciate all the help we can get. Thanks.
And now for the legal stuff…
RIPTEN.COM - BEST BUY GIFT CARD GIVEAWAY RULES

Each individual can only submit one comment, multiple entries from the same IP address will be deleted and abuse of the system may result in that individuals comments being completely removed from the drawing. To enter simply enter a comment regarding the site during the Promotional Period using a valid email address. If you are selected as the winner of the contest, you will receive an email to the account we have on file, at that time you will have 24 hours to respond to the email with the information required. Love the website. You guys have some good articles and exclusive pieces. Keep up the good work!!!
on October 11, 2007 2:19 pm
Great site. I can’t wait to go buy a Wii with my gift card!
on October 11, 2007 2:21 pm
what i think of the site is that it still pretty new to me because im new to it and from what i saw its up todate all it needs is more pictures but that it .
on October 11, 2007 2:24 pm
hello.
nice site.
on October 11, 2007 2:26 pm
Excellent content, though not thrilled with the layout.
on October 11, 2007 2:33 pm
The coloring is too bland on the main page, too much white space. Also, you could use some more reviews on the front page.
on October 11, 2007 2:43 pm
Love the site, always informative. Best place to come for information.
on October 11, 2007 2:45 pm
$250 that won’t even buy a core-tard package… and you want positive feedback? seriously?
good thing I’m used to low wages and no pay huh?
I think dave is right theres no contrast, the site blends with the ads and is a bit confusing.
also some of the ads especially the one at the top change the format.
I think you need to clean up the advertising a bit making sure there the same size format and probably focus your advertising at your audiance how many of a us gamers really care about our classmates or life expectancy?
on October 11, 2007 3:06 pm
Your site is promising, although the layout is kind of dull, as mentioned above. Some interesting articles, but not very many. There seems to be an overall lack of content on your site. I mean you click on the reviews link and the latest review there is october 9th and it’s of the Playboy Mansion game… really guys? I’m not sure anybody really cared how that game turned out.
But… good effort I suppose.
on October 11, 2007 4:17 pm
I love this site. Thanks for the great contest!
on October 11, 2007 5:36 pm
It looks ike a pretty cool site. I’ve never heard of it before until today. Some more advertising for the site would be great. Get affiliated more with other sites maybe. A new logo wouldn’t be bad either.
on October 11, 2007 5:52 pm
This is a great site and it is really nice of you to give back to your readers by giving away this gift card.
Keep up the good work!
on October 11, 2007 5:52 pm
Use darker colors, all the whites hurt my eyes :)
on October 11, 2007 5:52 pm
Haven’t heard of the site before today. Got a link from the IGN Boards. Looks pretty nice, though I don’t like how the review section is laid out. I think a text listing of all of your reviews would be better for searching.
on October 11, 2007 5:56 pm
I like the website. It has a very clean look to it, but I also think that it could use some more colors besides white :-) Keep up the good work!
on October 11, 2007 6:00 pm
only been here a few times before, but the more sites dedicated to my favorite hobby the better, keep up the good work…and give me the BB gift card ;)
on October 11, 2007 6:01 pm
We truly need more websites like this. These huge websites such as gamespot, 1up, etc all for the most part want your wallet. And they just dwarf small upcoming sites. This one will be my goto for the future as far as gaming goes.
Looking forward to the future of the site, and good luck to the winner of the BB Bucks!
on October 11, 2007 6:01 pm
Always interesting stuff to read in your blog..Has become part of my daily routine these last few weeks. Congratulations on your 4 month anniversary. Best of luck for the future.
on October 11, 2007 6:04 pm
Great site guys. Keep up the good work!
on October 11, 2007 6:07 pm
its a great site. you definately have the content although there is a lotta clutter on your main page. its sometimes hard to find things and to keep up to date. although its needed, maybe a shorter summary or smaller graphic for each entry. one image + summary takes up a lot of space for 1024×768 resolution and thats what i think the majority resolution is probably of your reader.
i know theres a search feature n all but majority wont goto a specific site and search for news. thats what google is for. readers will mostly read whats on the front page and you may need to find a way to fit more than 5 articles on a page without making a ridiculously huge scroll bar.
on October 11, 2007 6:09 pm
Hey guys, lovin the site so far. Great articles and a slick interface! Keep it up!
on October 11, 2007 6:12 pm
I love this site, read many articles and as Justin.. the interface is awesome
on October 11, 2007 6:13 pm
Very nice design. I would recommend it to my friends!
on October 11, 2007 6:14 pm
This is pretty cool of you guys, Nice site!
on October 11, 2007 6:14 pm
since its random selection an arab will prolly win. but i like what u guys are doin here keep it up and i will surely b back
on October 11, 2007 6:18 pm
No lie, first time visitor. Looks like a blog. As others have said, layout could use some rearranging and more color. Look to have some good content though. At least you guys load way faster than 1up.com. God that site sucks. They have good content too but you can never tell b/c their **** doesn’t load half the time, so I’ll give you that much.
and good way to promote yourself, I’m sure you’ll get more 1st timers like myself :)
on October 11, 2007 6:25 pm
It’s too blogish, but it’s got a nice concept that needs to go farther. Kill the blog, make it more professional. Use your Header graphic/menus as a theme.
on October 11, 2007 6:25 pm
The layout is a bit confusing at times, and the colours a bit bland (I’m canadian, not a typo)
Regardless the writing is top notch, and you have a fan for years to come here.
on October 11, 2007 6:31 pm
I think the color layout is the only problem. The all white/gray look isn’t too hot.
on October 11, 2007 6:32 pm
Do some video coverage like Gametrailers!
on October 11, 2007 6:34 pm
I like this new place, if you can keep the fanboy madness down this place won’t end up like ___stiq.com. Looking forward to many great years of reading….
I’m digging you up too.
on October 11, 2007 6:36 pm
I like the simplicity of your site. If you compare to other sites, there’s 100,000 links and flashing things, and takes time to load. Simple = effective & functional & you did pretty good.
on October 11, 2007 6:37 pm
You have an awesome site, keep up the good work.
on October 11, 2007 6:39 pm
Good to see another game site working its way up. Like your guys style too. Keep up the good work and more people will find out about this site.
on October 11, 2007 6:39 pm
The lay-out is very old school (which I like). Keep up the good work.
on October 11, 2007 6:44 pm
I love the lay out of the site. And the interesting angles of some of the articles is a fresh look at the same news you see on all the other sites. Can’t think of anyway to improve you guys have done a great job.
on October 11, 2007 6:50 pm
The layout is clean and simple, which I like. You keep your articles nice and to the point. Great stuff here, KEEP UP THE GREAT WORK!
on October 11, 2007 6:52 pm
You guys rule!!!1! I love how you speak your opinions and are not influenced by the hype of games and such. Keep on rocking!
on October 11, 2007 7:13 pm
(+) I enjoy the style of writing found on this site and contributing authors seem to be enthusiastic about the project.
(-) Too much advertising. I realize how expensive a project like this can be, but there’s a certain point where it becomes difficult to take seriously. My browser went nuts trying to install plugins and blocking pop-ups– and then there are at least six prominent advertisements on each page.
on October 11, 2007 7:14 pm
Never knew this place existed until today. I’ll add you to my daily rotation of sites!
First thing is that the site’s layout is kinda bland, but I also can see that you went with simplicity. That really doesn’t bug me as much as other things. Make some sample site layouts and have a vote on what people like. Never knew, people might like this layout the best!
Reviews - You need more reviews of games, especially awkard games that major gaming sites just shrug and pass on. You also need more in game pics of the games (with funny captions of course) to get a better feel of what you’re talking about in your write ups. I’m not sure how big your staff is, but more merrier. The more unbiased game reviews you have the more traffic you’ll get. Also I’m unsure of you bandwidth restraints because always make video reviews when possible. Just make them all in flash. After gametrailers.com I’m so spoiled by them that I shurg off write ups.
This section should only have game reviews in here, not reviews of trailers or events. That can be kept in the ‘preview’ section. Reviews should only be reviews of game demos, released or soon to be released games. There’s too many movies released on HD-DVD and Blu-Ray every month and it would only take away valuable resources that could be put into game reviews.
Also at the end of your first page it says ‘Older Entries.’ Well as your page grows this is going to become a mess really quick as your list grows. I think you should simplify it. Once something falls into the ‘Older Entries’ just have alphabetic listing from A to Z and when you click on a letter it says a simple HTML link to the review. So for example, say a month from now I want to see a review of Halo 3. I click on Old Entries, click on H, click on Halo 3.
Previews - Just need more pics if possible in the previews. Videoes of gameplay are great. If it’s a video that doesn’t show gameplay don’t waste the bandwidth I say.
Trailers - Rename to featurettes. ;) Features I say is something game released that doesn’t quite fall under previews or is too broad to put under one game’s catagory.
Gimmick - You need a gimmick. Gametrailers has screwattack. The Escapist has Yahtzee Croshaw. You need to find your own video gimmic.
Those are my thoughts. It’s all about content. The more quality content you have the better.
on October 11, 2007 7:18 pm
I must say, I came for the Best Buy Card, but upon reviewing your site I have found out that its AWESOME! Keep up the good work and I will definitley become a regular and spread the word at where I usually go.
on October 11, 2007 7:53 pm
you guys have some of the best writing i’ve seen on a video game blog in a long time. the layout and design of the site is pretty user friendly and that’s a good thing for someone like me who has ADD for websites :)
keep up the good work.
on October 11, 2007 7:55 pm
As others have said, the color scheme is rather bland, but that’s not my main issue. The layout needs a good overhaul. The top bar is good, but the actual news area needs some help. I don’t like having to keep scrolling down to see the updates. I noticed that there’s a ‘Recently Written’ box on the side, but I barely did because it looked like it was part of the Google ad. All of the updates should be condensed down on the main page so that I can see everything right up front. Why does a gamer come to a site like this? For content and information, so you need to make sure everything you have to offer is right in front of them when they visit. The articles themselves are well written, now all you have to do is make sure we can easily see what you have instead of having to go searching for it.
on October 11, 2007 8:12 pm
havent read anything yet - but i’ll take the $ for sure! this better be randoM!
on October 11, 2007 8:24 pm
Looks pretty good so far for a new site. It’s pretty basic, but I’m sure the financial backing isn’t the greatest yet. I’ll add you to my list of sites to frquent. Keep up the good work.
on October 11, 2007 8:35 pm
Nice looking site and nice giveaway!
on October 11, 2007 9:12 pm
I like the site, it’s a good promotion you’ve got because this is how I found the site! Wii rocks!
on October 11, 2007 9:25 pm
I have to say, the best part of the website is your layout. It is perhaps the easiest of the gaming sites I visit to navigate. Way better than IGN, and very joystiq-esque (that’s a compliment). Don’t change a thing!
on October 11, 2007 10:24 pm
I haven’t read other comments, so I don’t know if it’s been said, but the background needs to be black instead of white. It’s too bright and hard on the eyes.
on October 12, 2007 1:21 am
Count me in!
I hate sites that have black backgrounds. I’m glad you have a white background. For the poster who said the contrary, might I suggest turning down your monitor’s brightness.
on October 12, 2007 9:10 am
Love the site guys keep up the great work. The lay out is superb.
on October 12, 2007 9:11 am
The best part of the site would have to be the layout everything is simple and easy to find.
on October 12, 2007 1:21 pm
Very promising site - nice clean interface. Keep the content coming!
on October 12, 2007 1:26 pm
Love the new site! Keep it up!!
on October 12, 2007 5:37 pm
Nice website. I don’t mind the white color. Too many colors and graphics is annoying.
on October 12, 2007 6:18 pm
The site is pretty nice. Good information. Though I do agree the advertising is a little iffy and could use some redoing.
on October 12, 2007 7:00 pm
Great site, fun to read
on October 13, 2007 4:00 am
I like this website because it’s just more interesting to read opinionated news rather than the straight facts. After Kotaku, you guys are the next stop in my daily gaming news surf. If I had to rate you guys, it would be a solid B.
on October 13, 2007 3:10 pm
Layout and design is “ex pro coooool”
Love your reviews & trailers
on October 13, 2007 6:41 pm
Nice site. I would like to some PC Game reviews though! Hope I win the gift card.
on October 13, 2007 7:48 pm
More contests! Nothing keeps me coming back to a site then contests! And this is a great way to do it!
on October 13, 2007 10:05 pm
great contest. i never win anything. i like the writing on this site. keep up the good work.
on October 13, 2007 10:08 pm
Site is very white but it loads pretty quickly and the articles are good. Never herd of it before seeing the contest. Will continue to check it out though.
on October 14, 2007 7:26 am
Love the site but needs more colors I love reading the artcles and the site loads fairly quick
on October 14, 2007 1:31 pm
Like the site, like the info it provides, but yes, it could use more color. I like the white background, it is easy on the eyes. However, it would be nice if each topic down the left and right side of the page had a color associated with it so it can be found relatively quickly with a visual review of the front page of the site. I agree with the comment listed suggesting alphabetical listing for older entries. Also, I would like to see the ads on the site all kept in one area so that the page is less distracting and the reader does not need to sift through all the ads to find content of interest. All in all a great start and things can only get even better as time goes on. Thanks for letting the readers have input.
on October 14, 2007 2:09 pm
Hell Yeah,
A Free $250 dollars, count me in.
I never win stuff like this, and yet I still enter.
Great Site dude, I love reading the articles here.
on October 15, 2007 12:54 am
Uh yea, i’m here cause i got lost…but i like it so i might stay,
on October 15, 2007 2:12 am
hey very nice site just jumped on here from another site liked what I saw so I have on my top 5 Favs. keep up the good work
on October 15, 2007 5:11 pm
My favorite thing about RIPTEN is the ‘top tags’ and ‘recently written’ info on the front page.
I also really enjoy reading what Drake and Chadd have to say :)
But, I think the site needs more color. All the white hurts my eyes! And maybe a new layout.
on October 18, 2007 1:23 pm
The clean lines and washed colors give Ripten a solid, grid look. I would like to see a print.css so the articles are better formatted for a printer. Very fine use of WordPress.
on October 23, 2007 5:23 pm
Nice site. Very informative. Would suggest changing color and layout for easy viewing.
on October 28, 2007 5:28 am
Simple and direct, easy on the mobile read
on October 30, 2007 11:16 am
Never been here before. It is a very nice site, so how did I miss it all this time? My DD loves this stuff. Myself I just hop around looking for Christmas gift ideas.
on October 30, 2007 2:55 pm
Nice website, lots of useful info.
on November 10, 2007 4:39 pm
Great site!
I always look to you guys before I buy. Keep it up!
on November 25, 2007 1:33 am
Definitely nice, can always find what i’m looking for here :)
on December 20, 2007 6:39 pm
So I’m definately in love with your site, gives alot of good feedback on games and for me one big reason why i like this site is that its not blocked from my work intranet which is a huge plus cause when i get home and not in the mood to be social i just start playing cod4 so i really have no other time to check the internet except when i’m at work. keep up the good work guys
on February 15, 2008 1:39 pm
Pick me :)
on April 8, 2008 9:21 pm
