Bioware and LucasArts – A New Hope

Stop trying to ninja loot my lightsaber!

In a press release today, LucasArts finally confirmed a long standing rumor which involved the company working side by side with Bioware to publish and develop a “ground-breaking interactive product”. Could this be the long-anticipated Star Wars MMO everyone has been hoping that Star Wars Galaxies would be? Fans of both companies will have to wait a little longer, as the press release promises more information coming at “a later date”.

Jim Ward, President of LucasArts, went on to comment, “we believe that our upcoming product will deliver an experience that will span the traditional boundaries of video game entertainment.” Assuming the product they are working on is indeed a Star Wars MMO, the fit could provide a deeper story element than most of the current titles, essentially fusing what players love most about the single player games with all the social aspects of a multiplayer game.

This is all speculative at the moment however, as nothing more than a development team has been announced thus far. That said, Bioware’s track record of making story-driven games speaks for itself.

In the same press release, CEO of Bioware Ray Muzyka went on to state, “BioWare’s mission is to deliver the best story and character-driven games in the world, delivering powerful emotional experiences to our fans.” Let’s hope we’re as floored by the new game as we were when we first saw Luke Skywalker turn off his targeting computer.

I really hope this is going to be an epic star wars single player rpg, like kotor 3 and not kotor mmo.

As much as the idea of a KOTR MMO appeals to me. I have to agree with you. I like the tight narrative offered to you with a single player game. KOTR, and KOTR 2 are deffinetly among my favorite games of all time. So I really hope they move more in that direction.

Galaxies is still active isn’t it?

I just don’t see Jedi every properly existing inside an mmo where the “overlords” must actively balance there game to maintain a subscriber base.

You can’t be all powerful Jedi in an mmo when the very structure of an mmo is resistant to those kinds of archetypes.

Being a Jedi is all about indulging in the force, bending others to your every whim at will. Thats not really possible in an mmo because of the gestapo like need to balance gameplay and you simply can’t have a star wars world that isn’t hell bent and on the fringe.

Rules seldom apply to star wars, in fact star wars to me is all about breaking the rules of the galactic civilizations taking part in epic struggles between good and evil. For me personally more so then being evil or good is gathering wealth and power. I’d hope that in a follow up to kotor they would flesh out and blur good and evil and more fully explore a middle (Very Grey) road.

This is great news. The guys at bioware really need to show the industry how to write a story again. we’ve been getting some bad ones as of late.
