Sony Confirms Uncharted Demo Region Locking – Naughty Dog Working On Fix

by Patrick Steen on November 8, 2007 at 10:00 pm

The Uncharted: Drake’s Fortune demo recently released on the US PSN Store is sadly not playable on PS3’s outside of that region, as it appears to be region locked. At first, the official response from Sony was disconcerting, stating those in Europe and Japan should wait for the demo to be on their store.

However, a follow up response was issued on Sony’s official blog a few hours ago by Sam Thompson, the line producer on Uncharted: Drake’s Fortune, confirming what most of us already knew.

The error being experienced by those attempting to play the demo outside the US is indeed due to region locking, but it was not intentional. Naughty Dog has been made aware of the issue, and Sam promises to report back to everyone tomorrow with an update. The official comment can be viewed below.

Hi guys and gals,

We hear you loud and clear. Wanted to chime in here and let you know that we have shared your frustration with the Naughty Dog team and we are going to see what we can do. I will be back tomorrow with an update, but in the meantime I hope you can be patient and bear with us. As you have learned through communicating with Evan and Amy on the blog, Naughty Dog is a studio that listens to gamers, so I hope to have good news for you soon.

Thanks,
Sam

This is great news, because when you’re met with a black screen after spending over an hour to download a demo which you’ve been looking forward to play, you are certainly not going to be walking away with a smile on your face.

to fix create a new account on yourps3 that has the U.S.A set as your home and the download the demo from that account. 60% of people Iknowin the pal region (NZ) who have dont so have the demoworking perfectly. Use this as atemp solution to the problem.

    Hi Oli,

Can you make that slightly clearer? I have downloaded the demo from my US account, but it just won’t run even if I start playing it while logged into my US account. What’s your fix?

It doesn’t matter which region you create the account from, it matters which region your PS3 is from. If your buddies have a NA PS3 it will work, if they have a JPN or EU PS3 it will not.

I am in Canada, with a Japanese PS3, and it doesn’t work. Obviously it can detect that I am in NA from my IP address, but it arbitrarily decides I am Japanese because I bought my console in Asia.

So weak. I hope they get rid of this region coding crap altogether, especially since NA/EU/JPN are all the same region for games and Blu-rays.
