New Metal Gear Remake For PSP?

by Josh Pankratz on November 18, 2007 at 5:40 pm

In this months issue of EGM’s Rumor Mill, Quarterman reported that Konami is developing another Metal Gear game for the PSP. Apparently it isn’t going to be a spin off such as we’ve seen from Portable Ops. The new title is said to “Hearken back to the early days”.

Could this be a new business model for Konami? It seems the Japanese development house has taken a keen interest in portable development of late. With the launch of Portable Ops Plus, and Silent Hill Origins all in one month. It seems Konami seeks to fill in the gaps between their triple A titles with portable games.

I have been playing games for most of my young life. I’ve played the Metal Gear game on the NES and I enjoyed it. However, ever since the Metal Gear series has gone 3D and heavy on the cinematics and whatnot, I would very much like to see the same treatment for the original “Metal Gear” and Metal Gear 2: Solid Snake.” I understand that when these two games came out, the technology and development of video games were still in their early stages. Today though, if Hideo Kojima willed it, he could produce it and have a trusted director take on the remake of both games, in a similar spirit which made the series great. Although the originals were great then, it would be great to play through them with new visuals, sounds, dialogue, and everythings else that makes playing the series today so awesome.

I thought that should Kojima Productions decide to have the remakes on the PSP, it would probably cost less than having it redone on the PlayStation 3. You see, on the PSP the development team probably wouldn’t spend as much time on such details as textures. Also the polygonal geometry allowed on the PSP hardware wouldn’t be as complex. I am just a gamer, however, with what little I understand about the development of video games, I think remaking the first two original Metal Gear games wouldn’t be asking too much of a development team for the PSP. Also, the Metal Gear Solid Portable Ops has been made for the PSP; perhaps they can reuse alot of the character models from that game and retouch on the polygonal geometry and texturing. The producers, developers, and whatnot for the Final Fantasy series has been rehashing a lot of their original titles. I bought Final Fantasy Origins for the PlayStation 1. Had I waited, I could’ve bought the remakes for the PSP. From what I’ve seen SquareEnix do with their older titles, I figure Kojima Productions and Konami could do the same. I think the Metal Gear Series has such a strong following, that many would want to buy very detailed and cinematic remakes of the first two Metal Gear games. Hopefully this’ll happen.
