Tom Brokaw Brands Games and Blogs “Cancerous”
by Adam Montgomery on December 8, 2007
Former NBC newsman Tom Brokaw defended his network’s decision to broadcast the video of the Virginia Tech killer, instead condemning videogames and blogs as a true negative influence.
According to Brokaw, audiences would not be influenced by the broadcast images of the 2007 school shootings, but would be influenced by the games they played and the blogs they read. He then later referred to these two mediums as “cancerous”.
NBC caused controversy when they aired videos of Cho Seung Hui, killer of 32, which the disturbed perpetrator described as his “multimedia manifesto”. In this interview, Brokaw took issue with comments that his network was “manipulated”.
He later complained against NBC being “blamed” for future killings that appear to mimic those of Virginia Tech, despite himself similarly displacing blame towards blogs and videogames in this interview.
