PSU.com Makes Stealth Edit to GT5 Prologue Preview – No Car Damage

by Patrick Steen on December 11, 2007 at 4:14 pm

p14a-copy.jpg

“Just to check. Will my car take any damage or not?”

We’re not here to make enemies, but seeing PSU.com take a complete 180 turn on their original mention of car damage, is disconcerting – especially when their original article was so certain in its inclusion.

Their original paragraph read:

Many fans of the series may also be pleased to learn that damage modeling has finally been implemented with Prologue. On the whole, the damage effects are quite realistic and we can safely say that the days of the Gran Turismo series being called a ‘bumper car simulator’ are over.

It now reads:

Still, many fans will be disappointed to learn that damage modeling has yet to be implemented, and it is currently unknown whether or not the final build will contain this element.

Just wow. That’s some major edit. From telling us that the actual damage modeling looks “quite realistic” when they hadn’t actually seen it, to saying that it hasn’t yet been implemented.

Car damage in GT5 Prologue was always dubitable – and from former knowledge of Polyphony Digital interviews, they stated that car damage, a dynamic weather system and night tracks may come in updates to Prologue, or be part of the final Gran Turismo 5. All we can say is that Polyphony have these features in mind and are working on them, but that they won’t be a part of Prologue.

They stressed that they were working on the fundamentals, and that everything else was just luxury add-ons. To see more about Prologue updates please watch this interview with Kazunori Yamauchi, Polyphony Digital’s Director.

We at Ripten apologise for being taken in by PSU.com’s mention of car damage, and are sorry if we misled you in our original article, which we have since edited.

Everyone makes mistakes and we hope PSU.com swallow their pride and state that they did in fact edit their original preview.

[ Thanks goes to Craig for bringing this to our attention. ]

*Update* PSU have seen stated that they did edit their preview, and apologise for doing so.

Man, Patrick, you are going to get a lot of hate emails from PSU members for posting this but great find nonetheless.

    PS:PC is back online…

I think PSU members also felt misled. It’s a pretty huge mistake, and doing a stealth edit and making me look slightly foolish is worth reporting.

I’d be disappointed if I was sent hate mail. I would prefer an apology instead.

    Patrick,

I’m Eric Blattberg, a journalist over at PSU, and be aware that the preview was indeed edited.

Oh nah man, is not you, is them. This is not the first time they have misled readers:

And it seems that trend isn’t about to stop anytime from now. Is on top of my most hated websites.

So, didn’t they say damage would be patched within a few weeks after GT5:P launch in Japan and that it would ship with damage with the US version? :)

Kudos to RIPTEN in general and Patrick in particular for the bold correction. It makes me wonder what exactly is going on over at PSU, that they would proceed with such a bold, unverified claim as “fact” in the first place.

huheuaheuahe – From the research I’ve done, no that is not the case. Damage may be added in an update.

Craig – Thanks to you. I wouldn’t mind if they’d say Damage may be in the game, or might be added etc. But that they put in their preview of the game that they’d seen the damage and that it looked very good…well that’s something else.

There’s a reason why we don’t link to PSU anymore. Here’s some other blunders from the year:

    - PSU claims Sony buys Rockstar. Deletes article next day.
    - PSU fakes interview with Valve about PS3’s power. Deletes article next day.

And now this. Ripten–hope you avoid linking to them too.

Andrew Yoon – Well the original context I put it in suggested we hadn’t seen any evidence of it, but it was good news if it was true.

But yes I will question their reliability next time.

We all make mistakes, but knowingly misleading readers is just a step too far.

get over it you bum, its a part of your american culture, just look at what your gouvernment did to go to war..And you have the time to be bothered by an unimportant mistake? Go wipe your ass bum.

    Richard Adansi:

    What do you mean exactly?

It wasn’t a mistake – it was misleading, claiming they had seen the game.

    And I’m not American.

I wouldn’t say we knowingly mislead our readers at PSU.com.

It’s not like we have an office where we meet everyday and have hands on with new games like IGN or something. Our writer simply posted his preview for GT 5 Prologue, and it was our mistake for not researching it further before editing and posting it live. I think what happened was there was some miscommunication between our editor and the journalist. We thought that he had actually seen the damage modeling in the game (not adding info from an interview) when he played the GT 5 Prologue Japanese demo.

Really there is no excuse for what happened. It was a mistake. Sorry everyone for the trouble.

    -Justin
