Upgraded Your PS3’s Hard Drive? Sony Approves!

by Dylan Duarte on December 30, 2007 at 9:30 am

ps3.jpg

While Microsoft has been banning people left and right for modding their Xbox 360 consoles, Sony is actually encouraging people to upgrade their PS3 hard drives with standard drives.

In a recent blog post, Sony’s Jeff Rubenstein talks about how easy it is to fill up even an 80GB hard drive, the biggest the company currently offers. What’s his solution?

“…you can swap it out yourself with the kind of drive found at most electronics retailers and on the internet…”

He even links to a CNET tutorial that will show you how to do it. He also makes a crack at Microsoft’s expense, stating “…the PS3 doesn’t require some hard-to-find proprietary HDD…”

Not only is that a mean thing to say, but it doesn’t even seem to be accurate. As soon as I read that, I checked out both Amazon and Gamestop.com and they both had the 120GB Xbox 360 hard drive in stock. Whatev.

Considering the PS3 was designed to have it’s HDD swapped with most retail HDDs comparing it to micorosft banning consoles for modded fans is unfair.

To mod the fans you have to open the xbox 360, which voids the warranty. Anyone who opens up their xbox 360 and fiddles with the innards and expects microsoft to still support it is an idiot.

I wasn’t trying to take a serious jab at Microsoft, I just thought the timing of the news was funny, considering I’ve been writing about Microsoft’s bannings recently.

Yeah but most people are going to look at that and go “…YEAH! HOW DARE M$$$$$$moneymoney$#$$$$!1!! PS3 FO LIEF!”

This is, after all, the internet o_O

the thing is, microsoft is kicking people off of xbox live for upgrading their fans, and not buying the crappy ones. so if anyone can think of a way that ISN’T a market sceme, let me know.

but im allll about mah 360, microsoft till death.

It’s nice that Jeff doesn’t mind modding, but does merely opening the thing up void your warranty?

You seem to have assumed that what Rubenstein said is a dig at Microsoft’s Xbox, where in fact no evidence exists to support that theory. The Xbox is never mentioned in his blog post, and despite your claim, what he says IS in fact entirely accurate: “the PS3 doesn’t require some hard-to-find proprietary HDD”

i think those hdds you found were actually from ms. being the cheapskates they are they have to sell you everything. Also i do like the ps3s method better since you can go nuts with it(im talking 1TB lol). i dont consider this a fanboyist statement…microsoft just really sucks in the modding/3rd party (peripheral) support/user generated content areas right now

However, plugging your PS3 into a surge protector apparently voids your warranty:
