Over 70 Weapons in MGS4: New English Demo Footage
by Patrick Steen on January 8, 2008 at 4:52 pm

Kojima revealed at TGS that there would be over 70 weapons in Metal Gear Solid 4, and what’s more they would be customisable. With CES going on right now, we are getting new footage of some of these weapons. Watching these five new videos from the MGS4 English demo, it’s almost safe to say that Kojima has done it again.
Kojima continues to announce new features, such as being able to play the game in First Person Mode, suggesting that there isn’t anything Snake can’t do. Furthermore, with over 70 weapons, MGS4 is going to be one of the most feature full games to come out in 2008.

In this following video from youtube user Konrad52, you can see the epic weapon shown in the title image - the rocket launcher, “Javelin”.

MGS4 will have the most diverse array of weapons yet seen in a Metal Gear game, not only because of the sheer amount, but that you can modify each weapon extensively.
As you get hold of new gear, you can add scopes, flashlights, shotguns, grenade launchers and more. This gear can be added to your weapons on pre-determined mounts to create something that will help you get through your diverse enemy encounters.

The enemy animation and hit reactions continue to impress, as can be seen in this recent captured video:

We only wish they would let all PS3 owners get hold of this demo, but at the moment this looks unlikely.

I would do unforgivable things to have PS3 within my grasp right now.
on January 8, 2008 9:12 pm
that footage from konrad52 isnt from the CES08 demo, its from the demo that was at the last gaming event (cant remember the name)
on January 8, 2008 9:21 pm
PS3? You mean MGS4? Acronyms are supposed to be our friends, Roly!
on January 8, 2008 9:27 pm
Eh, I’d go for an Xbox 360 version of MGS4 OR a PS3 in which case MGS4 is guaranteed.
So to answer your question. Both.
on January 8, 2008 9:30 pm
Oh, you clever bastard…
on January 8, 2008 10:05 pm
KORNdog: It is from the CES08 Demo, uploaded today and yesterday. This is the same demo that was at TGS07, but the difference here is that it’s in English.

Um MGS4 looks incredible. This just further intensifies my NEED for this game. Those game-play mechanics are so pristine and so so fluid. Can’t wait.
BTW its a ps3 exclusive, Konami re-affirmed that deal like 3 days ago squashing yet another rumor started by a jealous fanboy.

I just wish I could get excited about this, but the Metal Gear series has lost me. I loved the originals on the NES that no one talks about (how about a download on the PSN or XBLA?) and the first MGS game on the PSone or PSX or whatever we’re calling it these days was awesome. Much like the Final Fantasy series though, they’ve gone insane with power and it’s just not as cool. I mean, MGS2 was a huge ripoff. I didn’t pay for that stupid game to play as some aryan ninja, but that’s what I got. The demo for that game even had you thinking you’d play as snake. RIP OFF.
MGS3 just took the insanity further. Maybe I’m too old to follow the stuff, but it just wasn’t the same. I mean, the freakiest dude in MGS was Psycho Mantis, but in MGS3 I’m fighting a bee dude ripped straight from Ninja Scroll? LAME. At least you sort of played as Solid Snake… sort of. I’m just not getting my hopes up for this one. I wish I could, but I think the franchise has died for me.
I’m now putting on my flame retardant underwear because I know how special this game is to some people. I hope that for all of you this game lives up to your wildest dreams and saves the system, but I’m tired of being suckered in with promises of awesomeness only to be sucker punched with mediocrity.

^Dude, seriously? While I agree, MGS1 was one of the better titles, MGS2 and 3 are by no means terrible games.
You can’t complain about Raiden, sure, he’s a bit more soft spoken than Snake, but none the less badass [I mean, when's the last time you saw Snake take on 25 Metal Gears single handedly?]
The only reason you dislike Raiden, most likely, is the simple fact “He’s not Snake”.
But think about this: Snake was just like him in MGS1. Asking questions about what he was doing and why he was doing it.
Hell, Snake is the only one who was surprised to see a SURVEILLANCE CAMERA, in a fortified military base.
You’re complaining about a man who can control bees? Yeah, he was the lamest of the bosses in MGS3, but you mean to tell me you think he’s freakier that Psycho Mantis [A Psychic with Telekinesis, the ability to levitate and read minds], Sniper Wolf [Able to go weeks without eating, and still live, somehow. Not to mention all the pills she pops [Diazepan] to keep her aim steady.], Vulcan Raven [A man who carries the ammo tank of a fighter jet ON HIS BACK, which feeds directly into a humongous MINIGUN.], and Decoy Octopus [A man who can change his appearance completely by replacing his own blood with someone else's]? Really?

lol holy shit that comic is genius!
on January 9, 2008 11:47 am
dood, did yoy play against the sorroy? that was the most crazy shit ive seen in a game almost. you must be too old or something. this game is going to be maybe one of the greatest ever. no denying that
on January 9, 2008 2:39 pm
I….can…..not……wait…….for…this….game!!!!!
Xbox 360’s hahahahaha your having a laugh
on January 9, 2008 5:44 pm
I am pretty sure people with a ps3 are ONLY excited about this game because there is nothing else to get excited about. The enemy AI looks retarded, the gameplay looks a little too slow, easy, and boring, and snake runs like a speedwalker with a stick up his ass. The graphis look good and the sound is amazing, along with the friendly AI interaction being decent, except for the “here take this!” dropping the item on the floor situation for you to pick up. Plus, how many guns can one man really carry? thats ridiculous! There seems to be a lot of cool things about the game, but everyones treating it like it’s going to be the best game ever and it’s the ps3’s messiah and savior, I am just not THAT impressed. I think it will probably get 8’s or 9’s for the majority of its reviews, like most of the overhyped ps3 games.
on January 9, 2008 8:58 pm
how many weapons where in MGS 3? anybody know.
on January 9, 2008 10:22 pm
that looks bad. Camera issues, anyone notice that gun sticking throught the wall?
on January 10, 2008 7:11 am
@SniperFox
Yes, perhaps the only reason I didn’t like Raiden was because he wasn’t Snake. As I stated earlier, I got Metal Gear Solid to play as Solid Snake, not Solid Raiden. If I would have known going into it that I was going to play mostly as the aryan ninja, I might not have felt so ripped off, but it wasn’t hinted at anywhere that I noticed. None of the reviews I read or previews ever mentioned that I wouldn’t be playing as Snake at all. It was like some kind of grand conspiracy. You don’t think that if Nintendo made a Mario game and you only played as Mario on the first level people might be a little upset?
As far as the MGS bosses being plenty freaky on their own, I’d have to disagree. I mean, in MGS we’re talking about sort of like, comic book level just above human abilities. Psycho Mantis was a powerful psychic, which isn’t that far fetched at all, in my opinion. It’s still within the realm of reality that MGS went for. Sniper Wolf was just a really good sniper. I don’t remember it saying anything about her able to survive weeks without food but also reasonable. I don’t see how Diazapam is at all freaky. Vulcan Raven? Slight super strength. Nothing crazy there at all. Decoy Octopus, as I recall, impersonated people so well that it INCLUDED their blood, he didn’t just like, drink their blood and look like them. I could be wrong on these as it’s been years since I’ve played the game.
How does any of that compare to a dude who not only can control bees, but has them living inside him? Or a dude who can somehow use his tongue to grab stuff or walk on water? Or, like Todd mentioned, Sorrow. I mean, the guy is DEAD. You fight him in limbo man. Even Vamp and Fortune were a little over the top. Maybe I just got older or something, again, like Todd said, but it just doesn’t seem the same to me at all. It’s like going from Star Trek to Star Wars. The realities simply don’t mesh.
Besides that, the dialog and general story are just getting crazy. Sure, Raiden took out 25 metal gears. I guess that’s cool, but I kinda thought it was way past the realm of improbable. Luckily, it was all just some kind of virtual reality test thing so they could make him the new ninja thing for MGS4 or something.
The “cheese” factor is also getting very very bad. I’m all for drama, and the dialog in MGSx has always sort of been melodramatic (as you stated, the whole security camera thing), but it’s getting out of hand. Here is what I think some dialog for MGS4 will be like:
Solid Snake: I’m a warrior, it’s my job to die on the battlefield.
Person Who Cares: But what are you fighting for? You’ll die just to fight?
SS: It’s not my job, it’s who I am. When death comes, it’s not a soldier’s duty to determine whether or not the fight is right or just, he just fights, and dies if he has to.
PWC: So you’ll just give up your life because someone tells you to?
SS: When the dawn comes, only those who have seen the night can truly face the day. It’s the nature of war.
PWC: WAH WAH WAH I’m all crying and stuff
SS: And I’m all brooding and stuff, blah blah blah
It was bad in MGS, but it was also original and cool at the time but it’s getting worse as the games continues. I mean, look at the stupid theme song from MGS3. Is it really necessary to have a James Bond ripoff theme song deal going on?
Lastly, how many “expansions” or bonus deals are we going to see here. Is there going to be a MGS4 Substance, or are they just going to milk fans with the online portion of the game. Starter pack sounds remarkably like a CCG. I guess that’s how they intend to keep the PSN free, by releasing games in packs instead of the whole thing at once.
@Todd
Yes, I am old. Too old to begin the training. I don’t think I’m alone though.
As far as MGS4 being the greatest game ever, that’s what “they” said about Halo 3. It’s come, it’s gone, it hasn’t changed the world at all. Most people on my friends list are playing COD4 these days, so the online portion didn’t even last that long, and some of those people only got a 360 to go straight from Halo 2 to Halo 3. If you think MGS4 is going to do better than Halo, well, the numbers just don’t support it man. Look at this:
Metal Gear Solid - 5.59 mil
Metal Gear Solid 2 - 5.56 mil
Metal Gear Solid 3 - 3.96 mil
Halo - 6.43 mil
Halo 2 - 8.45 mil
Halo 3 - 6.51 mil
I mean, Halo 3 helped sell consoles man. No matter my opinion on the game, I know people who only got a 360 when the game came out. They went straight from Halo 2 to Halo 3. What they did after that doesn’t matter, because they already got the system. Metal Gear’s numbers went DOWN at their last game. The series lost fans, if not from the ripoff that was Raiden or the deterioration of the story, than some other reason. Hell, maybe they jumped ship from the PS2 to the Xbox, who knows, but there simply aren’t as many people who care about the game that there used to be.
Again, for the people looking forward to it, I hope it’s as great as you think it looks, but I’m not too hopeful on this one at all. As far as this being the system seller that saves the PS3, I really truly doubt that.
To make sure that my flame retardant underpants get even more use, I’m going to say that this game will be on the 360 within one year of it’s release on the PS3.

Krispy demon, just stfu plz.
Numbers don’t prove anything.
Everybody has their personal likes, and dislikes.
Halo story is poor at best, and it’s repetitve with no depth to the gameplay. Just aim and shoot, oh and whack somebody with your gun. Did I meantion do a uber lame jump that goes 20 feet into the air slowly?
What’s worse? A motorcross wearing elf, that’s scared to show his face? Or a guy controlling bee’s?
If you let one boss ruin a whole game experience for you then I’m sorry.
I’ve beat metal gear over 20 times, maybe more than 30.
I have snake eater and subsistance.
I beat it on Extreme mode in under 5 hours, no deaths, no alerts, no kills.
It was amazing, you can kill people many different ways.
Can you put C4 on guards back’s and blow them up whenever you want on halo?
Can you take bullets out of yourself? and cure yourself? That’s realistic.
Atleast bullets hurt more than melee attacks in MGS.
Oh, and if master cheif is so great, how came he doesn’t have any cool CQC like snake does? Why is he so anal about his face? All mastercheif is, is a red neck shootin’ turkey aliens instead of animals.
All your numbers show, is how stupidity, and ignorance has been increaing, and how people who like a good story, and a game that has depth, those people are fading away…

Drew is right, numbers don’t prove anything. If they indicated anything more than commercial success, Titanic would be the hands down BEST MOVIE EVER.
Metal Gear has never been about realism. Kojima takes liberty in using all kinds of gameplay abstractions. These include being able to carry around an invisible arsenal, eating rations to restore health, and the like. MGS4 isn’t meant to be a recreation of reality, but to deliver an entertaining, immersive experience.
I was also disappointed when I learned that I wouldn’t be playing entirely as Snake throughout MGS2, but for me the highlights of the game more than make up for it. Kojima has stated that it was his intention to keep Raiden as a surprise for players until they played the game (even editing him out of trailers before release).
Although I, like most fans, would rather play solely as Snake throughout the game, I still admire Kojima for having the ambition to attempt a new perspective on the series. A cookie cutter sequel would’ve been easy, especially with the success the original had.
In fact, if I were to name a fault in MGS2 I might even say that it was TOO ambitious. But in the end, I think part of what makes the MGS series so memorable is its willingness to experiment. That’s when it gets it right - and we all know that it gets it right MOST of the time.
Besides, if you absolutely MUST play as Snake there’s always Substance (better late than never :P).
As for MGS4, I hope the game does well, but I know I’m going to enjoy it regardless of sales. To those of you who made it this far, thanks for listening.

Very nice Drew and so true. those kind of people are fading away but the ones that are into this amazing game know why its the best and don’t need to prove anything. HALO sucks. kids buy halo and the “xbox” they just don’t have the money to buy the best system out there. PS fan for life

+1 on Ares: you pretty much summed up how i feel i myself have played MGS1,MGS2,and MGS on the playstation consoles(want to get an emulator to play the originals) and each one blew me away and i want to get a PS3 for this (and GT5)
PS: I actually kinda liked the song for MGS3
