No MGS4 Demo - PSW Fail
by Patrick Steen on January 25, 2008 at 8:12 am
“We’ve got you now PSW!”
Naughty PSW. This magazine got it all wrong. Ryan Payton informs us on the latest Kojima Productions Report that there will be no Metal Gear Solid 4 Demo.
The lesson? PSW should trust their inside sources less, and we should all listen to the KP Podcast. We were so excited, but we should have listened to Ryan Payton in the first place. The game’s Assistant Producer never lies:
Considering how much we’ve changed since TGS/E for All, it would be a huge undertaking to create a new demo. Sorry guys.
Instead of taking any notice of PSW with their throw away comment at the end of their preview of the game:
Want more MGS4? Well you’ll get it very soon. The stage we played here will be on the PSN Store in the next month.
Or to their editor’s confirmation:
At the time of writing the article a Konami rep told us a demo, the demo we played in our office for the magazine article, would be on the PSN Store. It’s finished, we played it, so something should be appearing this month.
Ryan Payton makes it very clear that PSW got it completely wrong and there will be no demo, but what we can look forward to is more information on Metal Gear Online very soon.

Aren’t magazines written months ahead of time? It’s not really fair to bust on PSW for having incorrect information only a month after you said there would be no demo. All magazines do this, and they often have outdated info by the time they hit newsstands. It’s part of the reason people like the Internet so much.
Mr. Steen fails.

Patrick FTW!

Sweet - A demo wasn’t around a month ago, and there isn’t one now. PSW noted on the side that there would be a demo on the PSN - when any such notion was a complete fabrication.
The people ripping on PSW are Kojima, where Ryan says they made it up. Not me.

So PSW is wrong in assuming that since they played a demo, that very demo would eventually make it to the PSN? If they let me play a demo for the game, I don’t see why it would be so crazy to think they might release that demo for everyone else to play too.
He said it would be a “huge undertaking” to make a new demo, key word being “new”. What’s wrong with the old demo, and why couldn’t that have possibly been what PSW played and thought we could play too? A demo’s a demo, right? I just don’t think it’s right to be a dick to PSW just because some dude that works for Kojima said that there wouldn’t be a demo on the PSN, and PSW probably actually wrote that a few months ago and their info is outdated because of it. Like I said before, that’s part of the difference between the internet and a magazine - timeliness.

Firstly, do you work for PSW? If so I’m sorry.
Secondly, Magazines get to play preview builds all the time - without them they wouldn’t be able to preview a game. This is not a demo - and not all games that they preview have a demo release.
PSW claimed from their “inside sources” that there would be a PSN demo, when there never was going to be one. It’s all very well to say the “demo” we’re playing might come to the PSN - but to claim that it WILL and confirm this in a throw away comment is what is the problem here.
Furthermore, I disagree that I’m being a “dick” to PSW - I simply said that they “got it all wrong” and that they should “trust their inside sources less”. This isn’t the first time PSW have made false statements - Zoe 3 anyone?

Yeah no MGS4 demo. I’m glad! Let Kojima finish the game and get it out to us before the end of this fiscal quarter!

No I don’t work for PSW. In fact I never heard of PSW and I also don’t even have a PS3. I could care less about this MGS demo either. I just think that you being all “PSW said there would be a demo soon even though they actually wrote that article a few months ago. They were sooo wrong. Those idiots!” is dickheaded.
You can disagree all you want, but you were being a total dick. The whole point of this article is to point the finger at PSW and say “You were wrong”. If you don’t think that’s being a dick then maybe you are just much more of a dick than you realize. You’re probably like this in all aspects of your life and think you’re better than everyone else and that’s why you write dumb articles like this hating on PSW and Jack Thompson. Pick yourself up by putting others down.

Sweetnuts,
First I appreciate your taking the time to comment, and I can completely understand one not agreeing with the words/ opinions of another, however one thing that I am very proud of here at ripten is that I have developed a site that allows my writers to be themselves and speak in their own individual voice.
You can disagree with Patrick — that is more than acceptable — but when you make statements like “You’re probably like this in all aspects of your life and think you’re better than everyone else …” it unfortunately leads me to believe that you yourself embody these characteristics (especially since you just did to him what you accuse him of doing to others).
Have you ever heard of the term “psychological projection” or projection bias? The word is defined as “a defense mechanism in which one attributes to others one’s own unacceptable or unwanted thoughts or/and emotions. Projection reduces anxiety by allowing the expression of the unwanted subconscious impulses/desires without letting the ego recognize them.”
Please debate intelligently and don’t make blanket comments that ultimately make you look foolish.

Sweet:
The nature of this article was to point out to our readers that our original report of a MGS4 demo was untrue. I advised ourselves and our readers to not get carried away with statements made by PSW in the future. I also stated that PSW should lessen their trust in their inside source, and perhaps listen more closely to Kojima Productions.
That was the motive of the article.
Whether their decision to print this was made months ago is still irrelevant, since there were even less signs of a demo then. Furthermore their editor made the decision to confirm that a demo was coming only last week. Thus, saying that PSW were wrong and made a mistake should not constitute to me being a “dick”.
Furthermore, arguing against Jack Thompson and his odd opinions, when he threatens to sue almost every gaming blog for speaking against him, does not make me the “dick”.
I’m sorry if the words in this article caused you any offense.
