Rumor: 160GB PS3 Replacing 80GB Model - *Update*

by Roly Reyes on January 28, 2008 at 5:47 pm

ps3_slide_011-copy.jpg According to the fine folks over at Arstechnica, a very mysterious reputable source has trickled down some inside info that reveals Sony’s plan to continue with the two SKU approach.

However, this will be at the expense of the current 80GB SKU in order to make way for a newer and probably more expensive 160GB SKU.

If you’re crazy about spider-like humanoids, then you may want quickly buy the current 80GB SKU that comes with Spiderman 3. If not there is a very good reason for you to wait it out for the 160GB SKU. A conjunction, and a number – DualShock3. That’s right, say bye-bye to your weightless tilt sensor and say hello to a tilt sensor with unnecessary last-gen all important rumble.

Upon further digging I found the rumored specs for this new 160GB SKU that has a very high likelihood of being on it’s way in.

* Code: CECHG06 (SPECIFICATION)
* Sony PlayStation 3
* 160gb 2.5 SATA 5400rpm HDD
* CELL Broadband Engine (65nm process) @ 3.2ghz
* PPU x1, SPE x8
* RSX GPU (65nm process) @ 550mhz
* Blu-Ray Optical Disc Drive @ 2x
* Memory Card Reader- Memory Stick Duo, Compact Flash, Secure
* Digital
* 6x USB 2.0 ports
* 2x HDMI 1.3 ports
* 3x Gigabit Ethernet ports
* DUALSHOCK 3 controller

Source: Arstechnica

*Update* - Bad news for UK gamers: if there is a SKU with a larger HDD in the works, they’re not going to see it.

Despite SCEE’s previous claims that “Even 60GB may not be enough eventually” a spokesperson for the company has now revealed:”We do not currently have any plans to release a 120GB PlayStation 3 in the UK.”

Sad face.

It’s a bitter blow for anyone who was hoping that a new SKU would finally bring full backwards compatibility with it. US gamers shouldn’t get too smug yet though; SCEA are keeping mum.

    You know I eventually want to buy a PS3 but there’s no way I’ll be able to do that until sony gets their shit together regarding SKUs. I mean, holy shit. Pick some skus and decide already. Goddamn.

    I figured this would happen. You can’t find a PS3 80GB anywhere but Circuit City.

    Best Buy Don’t have em, I know I was looking.

    And I don’t think they would be getting rid of the Backward compatibility all together, so this is not really a surprise to me.

    It doesn’t make sense though, because you can upgrade the hard-drive to whatever you want.

    microsoft has had what core, arcade, premium, elite and halo editions? plus revisions have added hdmi to the skues…

    if you want a ps3 just buy one, don’t cry about the effing skues. lame.

    A core, premium and elite. That’s three, multiple hardware revisions don’t count. Even if you count the halo 3 edition that’s 4. With PS3 there’s been the 20gb, 40gb, 60gb, 80gb and now possibly 160gb all with different levels of functionality and backwards compatibility which CANNOT be upgraded or added on later. And with the Wii, just one. And it seems as if sony won’t stop there.

    Many have praised sony for having all these extra features but they can’t seem to decide which ones they want their system to have and how much it should all cost. I’ll buy one when they’ve made up their minds.

    so hardware revision on ps3 count but 360 hardware revisions don’t? even if you don’t count the hdmi to hdmi revision the 360 hardware under went, there still ahead of sony with 5 skues thus far the core, premium, elite, halo edition and the arcade edition which replaced the core skue.

    It seems to me the primary reason to purchase a ps3 is to play ps3 software and all skues support ps3 software… so if you want to play ps3 games and you want bc then go buy the 80 gig, its still available. So what if they put a bigger hard drive in it, the $399 skue is for those who don’t care about bc the other 3 skues all technically support bc so which features have been removed?

    This isn’t new with sony, they did this with ps1 and ps2 revising hardware multiple times and if your going to wait for sony to “get there shit together” maybe in eight years when they come out with the final ps3 lite you’ll jump on board…

    This makes sense for gamers and Sony since the price of a 160gb drive is just a little bit more than the 80gb drive. You get double the space for only $10-20 per drive. I think it’s a good move. Even if some people cry because they can’t handle getting more for less.

    “Even if some people cry because they can’t handle getting more for less.”

    Yes, I’m sure that’s it.

    “Help! Please save us! From the features!”

    You’re a goddamn genius.

    Not to incite a flame war, but I think this needs clarification:

    The 360 has really only had 3 versions. The Arcade edition replaced the Core and is exactly the same except it comes with a wireless controller (as opposed to wired in the core), a 256MB memory card, and a disc with 5 arcade games on it.

    The Halo version is the same as the Premium, just a different color.

    The Elite, to my knowledge, has no variations or different versions.

    They have added HDMI in “revisions” to the console, in all its forms, but I wouldn’t necessarily call that a whole new version.

    Either way, even if you count every single thing Microsoft has changed as a whole new version of the 360, and even if that means the 360 has had 20 different versions, the main difference here is that the 360 has only been adding features - the PS3 has been taking them away. Maybe the new rumored PS3 will give us back our backwards compatibility, in which case it’s a good idea on Sony’s part.

    I think what must be important is that the price shouldn’t go up. BC is what has been removed, which I’m not sure was the right decision - but ultimately it saves them a lot of money and make them drop the price.

    I think that’s more important than adding new features and upping the price. Moreover, expect to see models with increased HDD’s throughout the consoles life as it becomes cheaper and more DLC follows.

    @ Dan Landis

    Exactly. And at least with the 360 you can upgrade your core/arcade to the features that the elite has, if you so choose. How do I add BC to a PS3 with none?

    That’s been such a given with a new playstation, that it’ll play the previous playstations games. Of all the things to remove I can’t believe they’d do this.

    As for the halo 3 edition, yeah, it’s just an ugly premium. I’ve never once looked at the premium and thought “Damn, if only it were a little more.. babyshit green.. that would be sweet.”

    I’m not bashing ps3 just for the hell of it, I plan to get one eventually. With games like MGS4 and FF X Versus/XIII I pretty much have no choice but to. But sony’s had their head up their ass since the ps3 was first announced and until they remove it I don’t feel comfortable giving them four to six hundred dollars.

    bc isn’t that great on the 360 either with many great games being incompatible.

    All they have been doing is removing features? They haven’t fully removed bc, if you want bc buy the model with bc. Even the 80 gig software bc has more backward compatible titles then the 360. So one ps3 made cheaper to give options to those who just want to play ps3 games is sony removing features… right, well least they include a hard drive in all skues unlike the core which cripples game development to support inferior hardware skues.

    Waiting for sony to get there shit together is a ridiculous sentiment considering microsofts position with high failure rates. Perhaps gamers feel more comfortable giving microsoft 400 dollars because they know live will be down when they want to play the most, the hardware will fail when you want to play and customer service will treat you like your two feet tall when your 350 comes crashing down.

    Same here. I waiting for Sony to get a solid strategy together, then I’ll fork over the cash. When I have the cash, that is.

    MGS4, Res 2, and FFXIII all look damn sexy.
