GTA IV Multiplayer Mode 360 Exclusive?
by Chad Lakkis on February 13, 2008 at 6:38 am

In a recent podcast featuring Major Nelson (Director of Programming for Xbox Live) and Don Mattrick (Microsofts external adviser), the upcoming Grand Theft Auto IV release was brought up and possibly revealed a bit of information that may leave Playstation 3 owners in a fit of rage.
“… I’m really excited with its downloadable content and online multiplayer support. Again, that’s something that’s unique to 360.” said Don. He went on to say “we think consumers are going to love that and it’s going to create, what I would describe again as the premium experience on our platform.”
None of this has been confirmed yet, however the official GTA IV site, which we reviewed complete with screen captures upon its initial launch, features a link titled multiplayer which was not working at the time of the launch and is still unavailable. For the sake of the PS3 faithful, and gamers in general, we sure hope this rumor proves to be untrue.
Update: CVG states that they have received confirmation from Rockstar that “both versions of Grand Theft Auto IV will have an online multiplayer component”. [Thanks LC]

they talk like that about every 360 game the “360″ version is always more “unique” especially where online is concerned because “live” is the kings pizazz or some such…
but hasn’t it been said that both versions will have dlc and multiplayer is still undisclosed?
I personally don’t see either of those two things swaying my decision to buy the ps3 version unless the ps3 is technically inferior be it load times or fps.

So just more blatant lies from Micro$oft, that’ll be the same company that lied about the PS3 have no exclusive content, which as we know, they’ll both have. It’ll give the fanboys some ammunition to froth and argue over, which I’m sure they love so much. Not to be accused of being a PS3 fanboy, I’d like to state that my opinions of M$ were formed long before the XBox existed, their lying cheating ways have been proven many times in the courts, so no offense intended to any 360 owners I assure you. We are all gamers after all.

well cvg claims rockstar has confirmed multiplayer in both versions.

Thanks LC. The story has been updated.

It’s probably just minced words. He probably meant about the “exclusive” DLC that the xbox will have not really meaning the multiplayer. Could also mean that there will be some multiplayer stuff that the PS3 won’t have, like different modes or something. Hell, maybe it’s like the “exclusives” for SoulCaliber 12 or whatever. You know, if you have the 360 you get to fight as Major Nelson or something and PS3 owners get to play as Hideo Kojima while Wii owners get Shigeru Miyamoto. Or maybe spawn was in there somewhere…
Of course, condsidering that it took Rockstar how much longer just to get the PS3 version running properly after they already had the 360 version good to go, who knows what extra things they might have gotten working for the Xbox. Hell, maybe with the PS3 slowing down development, MS sent lawyers after them or something and they HAD to come up with something to make up for MS losses because of their delays. Maybe it was part of the contract. Who knows.
As far as MS being this big lying corporate state of evilness, I think that both Sony and Microsoft have had their fair share of fib telling in the last several years. I mean, look at their backwards compatability issues on both sides. There are plenty of examples on both sides of downright evil. Frankly, I don’t care what MS does with computers or Yahoo or whatever. I care about the games. You can sit there and spout Linux elitist crap if you want, but frankly, Windows has the games. I don’t care if it runs slower or is able to be hacked better (which I don’t think is true, if Linux or anything else had the same number of people spending as much time trying to break it as windows does, I don’t think it would do nearly as well). The only video game mega-company that seems to be above flat-out lying seems to be Nintendo, and that might just be because they never say enough to get caught in a lie.

true dat krispy all corps are evil! though i disagree with your ninty is innocent shtick. lol
i believe rockstar commented a few days ago that the 360 exclusive dlc is going to be an experiment with episodic content.
i would imagine that the core game will be the same and that likely some dlc will be shared on both platforms, especially if they decide its a for charge thing.

Who mentioned Linux? Not hearing voices are we? :o)

I’m not really saying Nintendo is innocent, I’m just saying that they generally keep their mouth shut and/or just don’t get caught as much as Sony/Microsoft. Maybe I’m wrong, I stopped really paying attention to them after the N64.

They have been irrelevant since then anyhow, unless you like your gay plumbers and your pikmin stoned.
on February 15, 2008 10:20 am
Eh, I wouldn’t say their irrelevant really. They’re just… in a separate class or something. Kind of like uh… a shotgun and a pellet gun. You can buy them both at Walmart and they both do basically the same thing, but your friends aren’t going to get excited if you bring a loaded pellet gun to their house unless they’re twelve.
on February 15, 2008 11:21 am
yeah… irrelevant… thats what I said.
on February 16, 2008 8:40 pm
I don’t care about anything besides when the damn game comes out
on February 28, 2008 7:11 pm
I’m pretty sure that both have online game modes. Most likely what Major Nelson was talking about is the fact that the 360 will be getting exclusive downloadable chapters that the PS3 owners will not be getting. (FYI, I’m pretty sure Microsoft paid a couple million for those).

why are they doing that the GTA seires was a playstation exclusive so it should be for the ps3
