I'm not entirely sure it's possible to make a decent Sonic game in the same thread as the originals without making it 2D. I'm all for someone trying to make a great 3D Sonic game, but it's going to be an enormous challenge. I wouldn't mind playing through the Sonic story line with an RPG. It worked with Super Mario RPG, why not Sonic? Or they could always break the mold and go in some totally new direction with it. Maybe they could take lessons from the people who made the last few Metroid games. Those came out pretty well, and Samus has a ball form that was implemented excellently.
