Play.com Live: Soul Calibur IV Impressions

Yoda and Darth Vader are still missing in the playable demo of Soul Caliber IV, but our live footage showcases its other assets.

The demo we sat down with seemed to be the same one at CES; returning characters Cassandra, Taki and Mitsurugi were the only ones playable. Despite it being Cassandra who clearly flaunts her wares – to the extent of using her derriere as a weapon – it was Taki who caught the eye.

It wasn’t the fact that they clearly haven’t given her a bra; it was that they’ve mounted two jellies on her.

Of course you don’t have to take our word for it, because for our next episode of Ripten TV we’ve got footage. You’ll have to excuse the lag and that menu popping up – the 360 we were playing it on froze about a minute after we shot this. But at least it didn’t RROD.

Back to the rest of the demo; two stages were available for fisticuffs, and while they are compellingly detailed, there’s still no interaction with them, either directly or through scattered breakable objects. Likewise the promised finishing moves have yet to be added in.

This looks to be a very early build, so we’re not too worried yet and neither should you. The base combat is pacey and intuitive, and even though this is but a modest morsel, there’s plenty of promise in it.

Some of you (probably) will be sad to know there was no such jubbly jubilance for Mitsurugi. We checked.
