Calling all Cunning Linguists: Help Feed the Needy With FreeRice.org
by Roly Reyes on March 24, 2008 at 5:30 pm

Ever wanted to end world hunger? Here’s your chance to start, with just 20 grains of rice at a time.
FreeRice.org is an online vocabulary test (and ego booster, if you’re good with words). It’s pretty simple– you’re given a word, and then asked to pick the correct synonym out of four choices. Eventually you’ll reach the point when you realize you must take prefixes and suffixes, vaguely determine what they mean, and then make a not-so-educated guess.
For every word you get right, 20 grains of rice are donated to the UN World Food program. It’s not much at first, but if you play for long enough you’ll make a significant contribution.
Even if you are terrible with words, go ahead – cheat. All you’re doing is helping end world hunger is all, no biggie. And nobody will call you foul words and/or names for cheating in this particular game, we promise.
When you look at how many grains have been donated, it’s really quite impressive and now when I’m slacking, I can just tell everyone to leave me alone because I’m ending world hunger.

A worthy cause indeed. I got to 500 before my brain started hurting. Slim pickings for them on games forums though :o) No 733tspeak (or whatever it’s called today) and rambling unpunctuated sentences!
