Sony Ships Dualshock 3 Early

Dualshock 3 controllers are now shipping to major retailers for the PlayStation 3 console. Announced back in February for North America, the DS3 should be in stores by next week—ahead of its original April 15th date. Check out what titles will support rumble for its return.

The Dualshock 3 will introduce rumbling pressure sensors, while retaining the Sixaxis motion control and Bluetooth wireless technology. It will sell for the originally announced MSRP of $54.99— steep, but in line with the current high cost of PS3, 360 and Wii (remote and nunchuck) controllers.

Whether or not PS3 hardware will begin to come packaged with the DS3 controller is uncertain, but the DS3 will be included in the Metal Gear Solid 4 PS3 hardware bundle.

Sony has posted a list of games that will be compatible with rumble, not including future releases. That list includes some big titles, like Uncharted: Drake’s Fortune, Ratchet and Clank Future, Burnout: Paradise, Condemned 2, Devil May Cry 4 and MLB ’08: The Show.

It also includes certain titles— Resistance: Fall of Man, Motorstorm, Warhawk, Heavenly Sword, among others— that will support rumble, but will require a patch to do so. This patch will be automatically downloaded if your PS3 is online. Sony seems to have something planned for those offline, but it looks like you’re going to have a harder time taking advantage of the feature.

Assassin’s Creed, Unreal Tournament III, Dark Sector and The Darkness seem to be a few notable absentees.

Check out Sony’s official announcement for the full list of currently available compatible games.

In the future, this image will be present on all software releases that support rumble. MGS4 has already been said to include this support, and it can certainly be expected that Grand Theft Auto IV and Gran Turismo 5: Prologue will as well.

I was pumped up about this controller in the beginning. Unfortunately, the bumpers pressure sensitive buttons are the same and are concave which causes MAJOR slipping when you have to hold the button down. If you don’t think there’s an issue, play Burnout Paradise for about 30 minutes straight and what what happens. Also, notice that Motostorm doesn’t make use of the bumpers for it’s acceleration. There’s a reason, they felt it would detract from the game because testers complained of slipping. That’s a fact you don’t hear much anymore. All Sony had to do was to alter it just a little. So I’m still waiting for a 3rd party controller that doesn’t use a dongle and has power on features for the PS3. Sony just had to much pride to change a large and obvious design flaw.

I meant to say they “aren’t” concave…..but you get the picture.

I don’t know if I should feel good for sony for finally getting rumble, or sad and embarrassed that they didn’t have rumble at launch. Or that they lied about rumble over and over. Or that they refuse to give us a new controller design rather than the same fucking design for 3 generations in a row.

They were going to update the controller but every sony fanboy/gamer/industry moogle bitched and moaned about it, so now your stuck with your shitty controller for another generation… DEAL WITH it!

I’m not stuck with sh*t, I don’t own a PS3. I saw the “banana” PS3 controller, it looked funny but would have been 10x more comfortable than the current design. They should have stuck to their guns and released it as it was.

This, along with general lack of games, poor design, high cost and constant BS’ing by sony is the reason I don’t yet own one.

Maybe at some point in the future.
