MGO Resolution 665p Equivalent and 30fps

Pixel counters at the ready!  There’s been some debate over the final rendering resolution of Metal Gear Solid 4.  Screenshot pixel counting has been hazy, so the first sign of a possible resolution is found in the launch of the Metal Gear Online Beta.  The Beta has now begun in Europe (yes it’s up, go and play!) and the results are in.

Over at Beyond3d technical forums, resident video game investigator Quaz51 (who also happens to be Eurogamer’s source in their console face-offs), has now proved his suspicions right.  MGO renders natively at 1024by768.

This resolution is not 768p as you might suspect, since 1024by768 is not a 16/9 isomorphic resolution.  Instead, it’s equivalent resolution (contains the same number of pixels) is 1182by665 – or 665p.  It is thus accurate to say MGO renders natively at 665p.

Why this resolution? Rendering at this resolution can aid in post-processing effects, help with tiling through the RSX graphics chip, and also has the advantage of natively supporting 4/3 Standard Definition TV’s.  In addition, MGO has been confirmed to run at 30 frames per second.

There have been many “sub-HD” games this generation, from Halo 3 to Call of Duty 4.  To most the differences will be negligible and won’t detract from the gameplay experience.  Moreover, with MGO offering a higher resolution than the above two games along with 2xAA (gets rid of teh jaggies), you’ll be hard pressed to tell the difference.

It’s still uncertain whether this will be the final native resolution of MGS4. For now, go and enjoy the Beta!

Personally, I really don’t care about the technical aspect of the game. As long as it looks and plays good, every one should be happy.

  • KTR

Well I just played the Beta. It does look great, but runs so-so at times…We need 60FPS!!!

That’ll put the “PS3 IS SOOOO POWAFUL!” stuff to rest, at least.

  • Cenobia

So now the PS3 is just *more* powerful…

How many discs would the xbox need again? This game is going to be awesome regardless of the resolution. I’m just happy they focused more on gameplay than high resolution.

MORE powerful.. that’s great. You sir are a comedian.

  • LC

I am more powerful then your next gen consoles!

  • DW

My power out powers all the power..

  • Kakarotto

his power level is OVER 9000!!!!!

  • LC

@darwil, sorry dude but I played your console and its power is wiiker then mine dog. go home and play with yourself.

Lets get this straight! First off the first beta was rendering at lower resolution. Then we got the graphical update with Snake and MK 2 with new game types. I have a Mitsubishi 65″ 1080P HDTV, and any time the input signal changes through the HDMI cable, it notifies me.

So what are we getting natively rendered? 1080P!!! …..no if’s, and’s or but’s about it. The freak over at B3D is a known Xbox 360 fan not liking the fact that Kojima and Konami absolutely said NO MGS4 for Xbox 360!

Of all the people to posting information here, I least expected Patrick to be deluded by false information coming from a non PS3 fan!

  • Patrick Steen

Monarky, I’ve counted the steps myself. It’s 1024by768. No arguments. The input on your HDTV will not be 1024by768, it will be whatever the PS3 has upscaled it to – either 720p or 1080p.

Quaz might be an Xbox 360 “fan” but he is not a “fanboy”, plus he has respect for both consoles, their techniques and technology – showing great respect to GT5:P for example.

I suggest not projecting other people’s opinions onto respected individuals.

  • Monarky

First PS3 can’t upscale, and now it scales it to 1080P! Right? Because I’m not the only with an 65″ 1080P HDTV. I’ve talked to many others who see the same signal coming out of the PS3. So what is it? Does it have an upscaler or not? Plus are you playing the Demo???? Do you have the Demo? Because a long time ago Kojima said MGO would render native 1080P.

Me? I’ll believe what I see and right now MGO is looking and playing pretty dam great, no mater what any of you that don’t actually play say!!!

  • LC

    @ monarky wow…

  • Patrick Steen

Yes I have the MGO Beta – I’m level 4 and have put quite a few hours into it. I love playing as Snake. MGO does look great and runs well….because they’ve decided to run it at a lower resolution.

Really Monarchy, step back, take a chill pill. The PS3 employs horizantle upscaling – and uses the Cell/RSX to do so – it doesn’t need a chip to upscale. Horizantle upscaling was made available to the developers in 2007. There are many sub-HD PS3 games, as are there sub-HD Xbox 360 games. It’s not something you should get hung up on.

Kojima has not said what resolution he is going to get, though he might have hoped for 1080p. He has recently shown his displeasure at the graphics not meeting his vision – so perhaps 1080p was the first of his visions to go.

Moreover, you can see the difference very clearly with your eyes between a game like MGO, and a game like Ridge Racer 7 that runs at 1080p.

  • LC

“Game-wise, it’s pretty close to the original vision: you sneak into the battlefield and can choose whether to do a stealth game or interfere with the battle more directly. But the graphic, side things like motion-blending and the size of the map, totally was not accomplished to my original vision – to my satisfaction.”

“I remember saying three years ago that we wanted to create something revolutionary, but in reality we couldn’t really do that because of the CPU. We’re using the Cell engine to its limit., actually. Please don’t get me wrong, I’m not criticizing the PS3 machine, it’s just that we weren’t really aware of what the full-spec PS3 offered – we were creating something we couldn’t entirely see.”

    Kojima.

there you go Patrick, quotes from the man himself… some people actually read news about games and some obviously don’t.

  • Patrick Steen

LC: On another note, Kojima has always said this about his games, and a game has never met his vision – saying that hardware will always be his nemisis.
