Crytek Shifting To Console Focus
by Andrew Webster on April 30, 2008 at 4:28 pm

After the disappointing sales of PC-exclusive FPS Crysis, Crytek president Cevat Yerli has said that his company will no longer make titles exclusive to the PC platform. The main reason? Piracy.
“I believe that’s the core problem of PC Gaming, piracy,” Yerli explained. “It was a big lesson for us and I believe we wont have PC exclusives as we did with Crysis in future. We are going to support PC, but not exclusive anymore.”
Yerli also commented on the possibility of bringing the visually impressive Crysis to either the PlayStation 3 or Xbox 360, saying that it would be nearly impossible. “Crysis would have to be largely changed to bring it to Xbox 360 or Playstation 3,” Yerli said. “Crysis is designed to be PC exclusive.”
Since Crysis was designed to be a trilogy, and Yerli has said that future games will be coming to consoles, you have to wonder what the future of the franchise will look like. If the first game can’t run on current-generation consoles, does that mean that later games will take a step backward in terms of graphical fidelity? Or will their be significant differences between the PC and console versions of the games?

This is going to be interesting,

It’s unfortunate how some gamers act, I know a few who almost never buy a pc game legally and I wonder if they realize there contributing to the death of there favorite platform.
I like pc games and occasionally buy a few but I still mostly prefer kicking back with a controller when playing games and I really like crytec and what there doing with there map editor allowing user content to be easily created and shared.
While the piracy aspect of this story may be negative for crytec, seeing them refocus to include consoles as a release platform is a good thing in my opinion.
About crysis sequels taking a step back I’m not sure they have to, graphic cards have aways to go to be able play the original maxed out. I figure they will focus more on optimization, It’d just be insane to push the envelope even farther where your further limiting your potential user base on a hardware level, a problem I think plagued the original too.

I honestly think, that if they are going to bring the crysis sequels to consoles, and they HAVE to take it back because of the consoles being obsolete, they should just wait a few years for the NEXT gen systems to come out.

The next crysis game was announced and its pc exclusive, so it’s very likely that any sequel beyond that or new ip will indeed be on whatever next iteration of consoles coming out considering the time frame involved when developing games.
Which is disappointing since I wanted a console shooter with a map editor that doesn’t take place in africa or rip off cod mechanics.
