New PC Resident Evil 5 Trailer

Bring on the Blondes
Capcom’s first Resident Evil 5 trailer caused a minor uproar over its supposed racist imagery, showing a glorified white male American killing black African zombies. It’s understandable that such imagery might prompt a backlash, and so Capcom have rectified this in their new politically correct (yes, PC stands for politically correct and not Personal Computer in this instance ) “Captivate 2008″ trailer.
Notice how there are Caucasian zombies in almost every shot? This suggests Capcom either concentrated on showing these zombies in the trailer, or actually added multiracial enemies into the game itself after all the negative publicity.

It is supposed to take place in Africa, I don’t understand? If it took place in Jamaica and every zombie was a bunch of white people in suits and business dresses It would be stupid and unrealistic. If it was a game about the Yakuza and All the Yakuza members were blonde white guys or aborigines it would be unrealistic and stupid.
this is about as dumb as when people were crying about echochrome being racist.

white zombies are more challenging and scary anyway.
on June 1, 2008 9:41 am
I didn’t think of it that way LC,
you might be right. I wonder what DavidGX thinks about this :P

If they added in caucasian zombies to appease the whining masses I am going to be so pissed off. I’m sick of all these cries of racism whenever you have a white dude going up against black people but if it was a black guy it would be fine. Or it’s okay to veritably slaughter a spanish village three times over but once a black man falls into the mix, DANGER!! If that’s the case we should just cut out all black people from all video games ever. Solves the problem neatly.

im black and i don’t find it racist it just a game and wow a pc version coming out .Let hope the game drops in 08 instead of 09

As madpuppy said.. it’s supposed to take place in AFRICA. What the hell, people? Real racism is bad, but trying to create racism where none exists is even worse. Frankly, I think it would be racist if most of the enemies WEREN’T black, considering the location that the game is set in.

There are white people in Africa. Moreover, the original trailer was seen as offensive because of the combination of glorifying the white American with the camera, and giving a negative protrayal of the African population. This new trailer rectifies these complaints.
on June 3, 2008 7:44 pm
So a Japanese developer is glorifying a bizarrely shaped
“American” (the back of the characters arms are a little too puffy) putting down black zombies.
Sure, there are white people in AFRICA, so what, Like I said, If this was a game that took place in Japan and all of the zombies were Japanese, there would be no whining from the Asian “community” , they would be to busy playing the game.
MAN, I wish I had the time in my life to be up in arms over
every little imaginary slight
that could get me in the news.

“giving a negative protrayal of the African population.”
You mean the crazed Africans that attacked.. because of the parasites in them? Yeah, that would tend to give you a negative impression of a fellow…. o_O
I hardly think that’s reason to be offended. It would have been a bunch of crazed, psycho Mexicans if this were set in Mexico and that wouldn’t have been racist either.
on June 6, 2008 7:34 am
David: “the original trailer was seen as offensive because…” I’m giving the reason why the trailer was seen as offensive by some. Not that the trailer was objectively offensive.
on June 7, 2008 3:05 am
Ok, so, forgetting anything about any behavior being caused by the parasites.. how did the original trailer give a negative portrayal of the African population?
on June 7, 2008 5:25 am
You wouldn’t understand, your not black… Least that’s what they say. Might as well stop asking questions, unless your up for a one decided debate that ends with your just another demon hell spawn of the satanic white race blah blah blah. “Land of chains, Home of the enslaved.” “God Damned America”.
on June 7, 2008 8:12 am
Think of it this way, If this was a town in Africa and it was all white people, we would be hearing a different tune, “why aren’t black people being represented in the parasite zombie community!?
“what are all those white people doing in a rural African town?”
damned if you do……
on June 7, 2008 11:13 am
exactly.
on June 7, 2008 5:53 pm
All I saw was lots of Africans acting batshit insane.. which was caused by the parasites. So I don’t understand exactly what the issue is.
on June 7, 2008 9:28 pm
It started on some black african women’s blogging site with another one of those “people” “out to demonize” video games and “white people”. You see were racist, even when its the japanese doing it.
Instead of adding white people they should have scrapped africa, it is quite literally a parasite infested hell hole and even though fictional the game touches a little to close to home.
Whats with all the games set in africa all of a sudden?
on June 8, 2008 1:20 am
I guess game makers were getting tired of WW2.. I know I was.
on June 8, 2008 1:30 am
Nothing wrong with a different venue. WWII games have saturated the marked over the years. especially when companies have focused on the FPS “grunt” in the thick of it. there is little variation. the whole war wasn’t storming the shores of Normandy.

N’Gai Croal had this to say on the matter:
“There was a lot of imagery in that trailer that dovetailed with classic racist imagery. What was not funny, but sort of interesting, was that there were so many gamers who could not at all see it. Like literally couldn’t see it. So how could you have a conversation with people who don’t understand what you’re talking about and think that you’re sort of seeing race where nothing exists?
There was stuff like even before the point in the trailer where the crowd turned into zombies. There sort of being, in sort of post-modern parlance, they’re sort of “othered.” They’re hidden in shadows, you can barely see their eyes, and the perspective of the trailer is not even someone who’s coming to help the people. It’s like they’re all dangerous; they all need to be killed. It’s not even like one cute African — or Haitian or Caribbean — child could be saved. They’re all dangerous men, women and children. They all have to be killed. And given the history, given the not so distant post-colonial history, you would say to yourself, why would you uncritically put up those images?”

Moreover, the game’s co=Producer had this to say:
“JT: Well, first of all, in terms of the research that we did before we started making the game, we sent some of the staff to Africa to do a lot of research and they took a lot of photos, saw a lot of things, and we’re trying to put what we saw during that research trip into the game itself. You may have seen in the trailer today that some of the enemies that appeared were not all Africans. Other races appeared. That’s because, when we went to Africa, we saw that people were not all Africans. We saw people of all different races, Arabic and also Caucasians as well. We’re trying to put what we saw with our own eyes into the game.”

This is what they rectified in the second trailer, showing that their first trailer may have been the stereotypical one.
Not saying I agree chaps, just trying to give you as much info as possible. Knowledge is power and all that jazz…

This whole conversation is . Like many people have already stated we have been killing white and mexican zombies (in re4) for years now.. Its just that the black community trys to attack anything that will remotely damage its name… I see this whole conversation/debate/ what ever stemming from the ignorance of some african americans that prolly have never played a RE game, or never played anygame for that matter…
And what in the hell is complaning going to do? I’m pretty darn sure capcom isn’t gonna scrap the game cause some people don’t like that you are killing black people…. I know Ima get it and kill load of africans!
on June 8, 2008 12:09 pm
“I see this whole conversation/debate/ what ever stemming from the ignorance of some african americans that prolly have never played a RE game, or never played anygame for that matter…”
N’Gai is certainly not that man. That’s a pretty big stereotype of who found the trailer insensitive/showing racist imagery.

Sounds like people are looking at this way too hard.
