Cryptic Studios Working Star Trek Online? Looks Like a Yes!

For those who don’t know, Star Trek Online was a Star Trek MMORPG being developed in 2004 by Perpetual Entertainment. On January 14th, 2008, Perpetual announced that it was no longer working on the game and that the license and assets had been transferred to an unnamed San Francisco Bay Area based game developer. For a while now, it’s been rumored that that developer is Cryptic Studios, the developers of City of Heroes and City of Villians. Now it looks even more likely! Hit the jump!
Cryptic recently posted a mysterious countdown timer on its website as well as the website of its upcoming MMO, Champions Online. Within no time at all, fans on the official forums pointed out the background picture used for the timer is old concept art for Star Trek Online.
While this is still technically a rumor, I think that leaves little room for doubt. As of this writing, the countdown is at 45 days, 4 hours, and 15 minutes, so look for an official announcement sometime in July.
