Nintendo to Fix Wii Storage Problems

by Rangebar Merani on June 18, 2008 at 12:36 pm

After saying that only “geeks and otaku” have a problem with the Wii’s internal storage space and then apologizing shortly after, Nintendo Europe’s marketing director Laurent Fischer has said they recognise the problem and are working on a solution to fix it.

“We definitely detect that they [gamers] are serious and we know there is an issue in this, so it’s something that we’re working on.”

So, it sounds like a hard drive is coming to the Wii, right? Actually, it doesn’t sound like that at all after Fischer went on to say,

“Definitely there’s no plan to issue hardware, an external hard drive, but we know that we have an issue in that area. It’s very obvious and we’re perfectly aware of it, but there’s nothing we can say beyond this.”

If not an external hard drive, how does Nintendo plan on helping gamers with their Wii storage issues? More SD cards, perhaps? Ehhhh, I hope not.

Here’s hoping that Nintendo has a solution soon, seeing that every week new WiiWare and Virtual Console titles are coming out.

Other electronic devices with sd support have received firmware upgrades that add support for sdhc cards and I think that its plausible that a firmware update could address the inability to read from sd cards as well. I think its the smartest solution and really the only way to address storage issues without issuing hardware.

Well, there is another way — modify the firmware to accept off-the-shelf USB hard drives. I’d be surprised to see that, though, since, while it’s certainly the fastest, most open, and most flexible option, it’d mean that Nintendo loses out on those lucrative console-accessory sales.
