Are Trophies Sony’s Answer to Achievements?

A few days ago PS3fanboy.com received a tip regarding Sony’s version of Microsoft’s Achievements on Xbox Live. Supposedly the PSN ‘ranking’ system will be called Trophies. PS3 Fanboy received two photos from two different tipsters, The Patriots and Gassy Snake.

The first photo shows a ladder system of trophies titled Bronze, Silver, Gold and Platinum, with a number next to each and a number in the bottom corner.
The second tipster explained how the trophies would work. Each trophy is worth a different amount and when your total reaches a certain level, your rank increases. However, like in most MMOs, the total required to reach the next level increases each round, making it more difficult to rank up each time.
Why they might be real:
- The screenshots are high quality
- The Clank avatar is a real ps3 avatar
- The two separate screenshots are consistent with each other
- With 2.40 just around the corner, the next major PS3 update is getting closer and something like this is big enough to include
Why they might be fake:
- The screenshots are high quality. (When was the last time you saw such high quality screenshots that were not taken down already by Sony? Normally we only see low quality screenshots because everything is so secret.)
- It is very basic (this could also mean that it is in early development stages
- It seems more like a ranking system for a single game than for every game you play
The second tipster also talked about how this will integrate with the in-game XMB. When you tap the PS button in-game you will get you gamer page with your trophies, but when you hold down the PS button you will get all of the old options. This is the most logical solution to an in-game XMB, only strengthening the argument that this indeed is real and coming soon.
