Half-Life 2: Episode 3 at E3? This E3?!

by Roly Reyes on June 26, 2008 at 5:35 pm

What Would Gordan Freeman Do?

Valve isn’t known for their prompt delivery of games. Quite the contrary, they often announce release dates and push the game back until it’s as close to perfect as it can become. Such has been the evidence of almost all their games, all the way from Half-Life to Left 4 Dead. So it came as some surprise to hear from the E3 folks themselves that Half-Life 3 will be at E3 in a few weeks and it’ll be a Microsoft exclusive.

Notice how I said “ Microsoft exclusive”? According to E3.net, its listed platforms are Xbox 360 and PC – more than likely on Valve’s beloved Steam service. The lack of PS3 inclusion isn’t particularly surprising, considering Gabe Newell’s (Valve’s co-founder/managing director) comments about it some months back: “The PS3 is a total disaster on so many levels, I think it’s really clear that Sony lost track of what customers and what developers wanted,”

Episode 3 is slated to be the culmination and conclusion of the Half-Life 2 saga. In addition, it has been said that these ‘episodes’ have essentially been what the contents of Half-Life 3 would’ve been.

Since this information is coming from the official E3 site it’s likely that it’s fairly concrete. Mid-July can’t come quick enough.

Oh, Gordon, I’m looking forward to the next adventure with you. Half-Life is simply genius.

Whatever lame excuses Newell comes out with it’s pretty obvious where his loyalties lie. Plenty other developers have no problems with the PS3 so it’s pretty obvious that it’s just plain old bias and maybe a little backhander. Still, his company, his decision.

Farming out “the box” to EA for the PS3 pretty much ensured that it’ll never get any of the TF2 fixes/updates that so many people crave, leaving those of us who care to flounder around trying to decide who to blame. Repeated requests about fixes for the PS3 result in standard replies from EA blaming Valve, Valve blaming EA, Valve removing posts from their forums about it(allegedly) etc etc.

There was a theory that we (PS3 TF2 players) might get some fixes, new maps etc along with Episode 3. That however, now seems to have been blown out of the water.

Need less to say, regardless of actual blame, Valve certainly have a tarnished reputation (EA don’t need any more tarnishing) among PS3 owners.

Still, it’s only a game and er, an off topic one at that :o)

Hmm, looking at the link again, might it be the case that Valve won’t be listed as the publisher for a PS3 version if EA did the port again?
