Trophy Support For Old PS3 Games In Doubt?

Regardless of when update 2.40 is re-released, Infinity Ward and 2K Games have become the latest developers to say they won’t patch previously released PS3 games to support trophies.
After a barrage of queries on its forum, the developer stated it has no plans to implement trophies or even Rumble in Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare, purely because Sony have left it too late to introduce them.
“At this time, we have no plans to patch in Trophy support for Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare for the PS3,” said forum community manager Robert Bowling. “Much like DualShock rumble addition to the PS3, the support for these new features have come much to late for us to add it to Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare due to our current production schedule.”
A rebellion also seems to be underway on the 2K Games forums, where community manager Elizabeth Tobey told Civilization Revolution fans:
“Civilization Revolution will not support trophies. When we designed the game, before trophies were out, we did not plan on supporting the upcoming feature, and we are not going to add it.”
These announcements are a blow to the vision of PSN director of operations Eric Lempel, who told GameSpy that while Sony was not putting a deadline to developers, trophies would ultimately be supported in every existing game – though how Sony could possibly enforce this is a bit of a moot point. COD4 and CivRev join Resistance: Fall of Man and Ratchet and Clank Future: Tools of Destruction in the pool of titles that won’t be patched, with Insomniac also citing current projects (Resistance 2!) as being more important.
At least Infinity Ward still love the idea of them for future releases. Bowling adds that they “would have loved to have these in the game at launch if the support was available, or shortly after.”
Call of Duty 6 a given then, but it seems like trophies are going to take a while to get widespread retrospective support. If at all.

I wouldn’t waste my time either. Did you see how huge the downloads are just to implement trophies on ONE game? No wonder the PS3 needs a hard drive. PSN was poorly designed and continues to absolutely suck. A 20GB hard drive would already be full from all these mandatory installs for games and now even more hard drive space will be wasted for these stupid trophies.

Oh no, what’ll we do without trophies for games we’ve already played?
I thought 40Gb was the smallest PS3 drive? Or was there a 20 in Japan/US?
Why does PSN suck? I don’t see anything wrong with it myself.

OH NOES!! what will I do without trophies for my old game now? LMAO!!
I cant see this being a problem not having them for old games, in fact I dont really need em for new games :)

Trophies for older games I think would be a waste of time… IMO

Even your 40gb hard drive has to be suffering at this point, depending on what games you play and such, of course. I don’t see how this fits in with Sony’s supposed plan for the PS3 to simply have a longer life span than other consoles. I mean, it’s been, what, a little over a year and already MANDATORY downloads are starting to eat up space on top of installs for games and not these trophies. I suppose selling larger hard drives down the road is just part of their long term plans?
Needtocontrol, you missed one of the obvious benefits of trophies in that it can help boost sales of games that might otherwise not get purchased. As a 360 player, I’ve seen people do this on more than one occasion. They’ll buy, or at the very least rent, complete crap games just because the achievements are easy to get. I had a friend who purchased every single EA Sport ‘07 (perhaps it was ‘08) game just because all the achievements were cake. If Sony can manage to pull this off, I guarantee that there will be people rushing to be the highest ranked gamer on PSN. Maybe it’s not something YOU care about, but that is just you. One person. There are plenty of people out there who might care about getting their points up. I’d be willing to bet that if trophies catch on at all, there will be a section in PSTOM having interviews or something with people with crazy high gamer scores… or whatever it’s called on PSN… gamer rank? Something like that is, in and of itself, enough to get more than a few people fired up to rank up. Hell, look at people in CoD 4 getting elite ranks… which gets them pretty much nothing except being able to say I have an elite rank and there are lots of people doing that.
One thing that does bother me is how Sony doesn’t seem to learn when to shut it’s mouth, or at least tone things down a little. The same people that said the PS3 would be fully backwards compatible, and then not only didn’t deliver, but TOOK BACK backwards compatibility are now saying that ALL GAMES will eventually support trophies, and yet there are at least two developers that seem, to me at least, not at all excited about trophies, and at least four titles that will not support them.
On top of that Civ:Rev is being developed for the 360 at the same time, so it’s not like the developers don’t have some sort of groundwork to build from to add in trophies, since all games for the 360 are REQUIRED to have them, yet they’re not going to do it? Maybe Sony should try keeping third-party developers in the loop once in a while instead of letting them figure out their insane schemes months too late to do anything with them. Sometimes I really feel like Sony is fucking up on purpose.
And why does PSN suck? Maybe suck is a bit harsh, I mean, after all, it is free and we all know free stuff is always better than stuff that you have to pay for, right? Perhaps you should discuss it with a friend over voice chat, while playing two different games on your PS3, and let me know what you guys come up with… I’ll wait.

Krispy Demon is right! Cookigaki can’t do simple things on PSN like he can on Xbox Live. Didn’t Sony say Microsoft was copying them? If that was true than Microsoft would suck a lot more! PSN is lame! Cookigaki does not approve!
