Bricked By 2.40? Get New PS3

Sadly you’ll have to send your old one in.
With 2.41 online and issues resolved, what happens to the minority who can’t downloaded the fixed update after v2.40 “bricked” their PS3?
PSXExtreme is reporting that you can ring Sony’s Customer Service for a replacement console. SCEE informs us that the problem occurred when PS3’s failed to activate properly after updating, due to “certain system administrative data [...] contained on the HDD.” We’re not quite sure what that means, but it sounds like the Hard-drive was buggered.
There are reports that the problem could be solved by reformatting your HDD, but you’ll have to remove the thing and attach it to another PS3 or PC to do the formatting.
However, we advise that if you are having any issues, where “the XMB is not appearing, or no images are displaying on the screen,” to contact Sony’s Customer Service and get a brand spanking new console (if that is indeed their solution.)
Thankfully, those of us who successfully updated to v2.40 are not at any risk. And so ends Sony’s firmware debacle. Until next time, over and out.

Is there any chance of getting the data off the HD? I know I have a fair few save files/pics/movies etc I would hate to see go.

You can back up your saves anytime you like…before the console is bricked.
