The Big Dance Is Upon Us – Ripten E3 2008 Predictions

by Ripten Staff on July 12, 2008 at 1:41 pm

With less than two days left before E3 2008 officially begins, we here at Ripten would like to share with you, beloved readers, our hopes and dreams in regards to this year’s show. The only thing we’re asking of you, is to click on the link entitled “Read more”.

E3 is a time where male gamers around the globe cover up their collective stiffs and female gamers do… whatever they do when they are embarrassingly aroused. Bearing that in mind, the following are some choice expectations and far-out dreams from the Ripten staff:

Rangebar Merani

I’m most excited for the Nintendo conference, specifically the announcement of new Wii games. Hopefully Kid Icarus Wii!

Something I’d like to see happen would be the unveiling of a Final Fantasy VII remake on the PS3. I know this has been talked about in the past few years, but I’m still hoping it’ll happen sometime in the future. That would be fucking awesome.

Michael Geslani

Diablo III and Blizzard announcing an MMO – nuff said.

Andrew Podolsky

I predict that a new, non-FPS, non-RTS Halo game will be announced by Bungie.

Justin Arnold

EA is coming to town with a goodie bag I’d give a kidney to look into: Red Alert 3, Crysis: Warhead, Dead Space and Warhammer: Age of Reckoning. The last being most important due to the quality control rumors that have me grinding my teeth at night.

While I am glad 2K is releasing Bioshock for the PS3 and 2K Marin is currently working on the sequel, I can’t help but fret like an expectant father that my future child will be birthed into the world as some malformed CHUD. Bioshock was, quite simply, one of the best games of 2007 and definitely in my Top 10. With that in mind, I really need Ken Levine to show up, Unabomber-beard and all, and tell us he’s been on the development of the sequel the whole time then give me a hug and whisper in my ear, “It’s going to be ok Justin. Wow, have you been working out?”

Wade Larson

The biggest news coming out of E3 for me will be anything on Resident Evil 5. The game has been high on my wanted list since I finished Resident Evil 4, and four years have not lessened my appetite.

On my wishlist for announcements is one from Blizzard. I often dream of the day they will announce that StarCraft Ghost is back in production. Maybe now that they have Diablo III, StarCraft II and Wrath of the Lich King officially in the works, they can announce their super-secret project: StarCraft Ghost. However, chances are slim. But, hope springs eternal.

Also looking forward to Microsoft’s big E3 announcement. Whether or not it will live up to the hype is yet to be determined, but I will be watching Ripten closely, and probably hounding Chady for details.

Dan Landis

The game I’m most excited to find out more info on is BioWare’s Dragon Age. It’s supposed to be there, and unfortunately, I’m not.

The game I would love to see but most likely won’t be there is CCP’s MMORPG World of Darkness. It would be awesome if they revealed it by dimming the lights and sucking a few people dry (of blood, I mean).

Shaun Hinklein

Since Valve decided to get everyone’s hopes up with rumors of Half-life 2 Episode III only to smash my heart by announcing it wasn’t coming in the same week, I’ll settle my anxiousness with some footage of the console versions of Street Fighter IV. Don’t get me wrong – I’m eager to see all the new RPGs Square Enix has lined up for the Xbox 360, but it’s been awhile since I’ve stumbled onto a Street Fighter, and this time it’s looking golden.

If I could have anything happen at E3, I’d have it be held on a gigantic spaceship orbiting the earth. That’s pretty outside the box, isn’t it? As for video game related inquiries, it seems random and definitely not at the forefront, but I want Mother 3 to be an international release! After Brawl came out, people are finally figuring out where Lucas came from, and they’re not pleased to find out he’s in a game only accessible in Japan. Maybe Nintendo will peer into my dreams and ease the suffering of hundreds of fans? That’d be great.

Dylan Duarte

Narrowing all of the upcoming E3 showings down to one favorite is a nigh impossible task. While there are plenty of games being showcased that I’m looking forward to, such as Borderlands, Resident Evil 5, and Infamous, what I’m really excited about is what Nintendo’s big game is going to be. Reggie said a while back that they were maximizing their key franchises and they would announce their big holiday title at E3. As a Nintendo fanboy, I’m on the edge of my seat.

I’m also curious to see what Bungie’s going to announce. I’m getting pretty tired of all of the Halo rumors flying in from every direction. Is it Halo 4? Will Master Chief be in it? Will it be a third-person prequel titled Halo Zero? Will it be the Peter Jackson project? Can I has recon?! I really hope that their upcoming July 14th announcement doesn’t have a damn thing to do with Halo. Don’t get me wrong, I like Halo, but I’d rather see Bungie pull out a brand new IP.

Beau Rosser

I, like Rangebar, am totally hyped for Nintendo’s press conference. Excluding the Pac-man Vs. presentation, Nintendo has always delivered something special with their E3 press briefings. I expect this year’s conference to be nothing short of spectacular due to the most-likely announcement of Animal Crossing Wii and the new Kid Icarus. Just because Nintendo hasn’t formally mentioned either one of those two games doesn’t mean they don’t exist. Get off my back.

Something that would give my life more meaning would be if Sony’s Team ICO development group were to shed some light on their next game. I’ve played ICO and Shadow of the Colossus too many times to count; come on Sony, I need something new. That picture with the chain going into the ground can only go so far before I started knocking on your doors.

And maybe Nintendo will hint at or show a shell of their new DS re-model. Who knows.

Emily Balistrieri

I wonder if Square Enix will have anything new to show for Star Ocean 4?

Hey Shaun, you’re right, a new Mother 3 announcement would be wonderful.

Roly Reyes

Having just bought a Playstation 3 because of, not for, a singular title (Metal Gear Sold 4, for the overly-curious) I’m really looking forward to Killzone 2. I haven‘t played an evocative, gripping First-Person Shooter that I absolutely refuse to put down since Half-Life 2 and the way Killzone 2 is shaping up, my mind is a ticking time bomb, waiting to be blown. I haven’t seen much in the way of gameplay yet, but if they can nail that, oh man, that bomb will fully be running its course. I’ll admit to being somewhat of a graphics whore and this game has some great technology behind it that makes it look phenomenal, even if the color palette that we’ve seen so far is somewhat muted. Although, I have a feeling that Sony might take some of the spotlight from K2 and shine it on Resistance 2 for a big final holiday season push.

After solving Crisis Core: Final Fantasy VII and slowly, but surely, plugging away at Final Fantasy VII, I remembered what I hope will be announced at more or less every E3, it also reminded me as to how the world works. Square Enix isn’t afraid to remake every Final Fantasy game under the sun, but when it comes to the one I desperately want and hold some sentimental value for (it’s basically the game that convinced me to keep playing games), they just don’t want to. Yep, the universe hates me. But to be fair, they haven’t remade anything past FFVI, so I guess those divine beings care enough to make it logical to an extent. Not only will it make me jump for joy, but I’m sure the Internet will have a meltdown as well. Squeenix should really see about getting that done. The intro sequence is even already done! Remember this bad boy?

1. I’ve heard whispers on the wind that Netflix and Microsoft may come to an agreement to let people download rentals of movies via Xbox live. I’m currently on the fence about Netflix, but this would push me over to the side that makes them both money.

2. Borderlands, UFC: Undisputed, Fight Night Round 4: Believe it or not but these are the games I want to see the most. Probably because they’re still somewhat clandestine and not much is known about them. Just a bit of new information or a small glimpse of a new video would incite the same amount of joy in my heart as a small glimpse of the Lochness Monster or Bigfoot.

3. The Lochness Monster or Bigfoot. In an aquarium or a cage. Make it happen Microsoft! You can do anything!

4. Fallout 3: I really want to play it. I really want to see it. I just kinda want to be around it. I’ve been a huge Fallout fan for the past 10 years and the fact that I’ve seen the third installment of the series at the top of a lot of “most anticipated” lists makes me really happy.

5. I can’t wait to feel really proud of Nintendo. I know that they’re going to pull something strange out of their brains like Wii Fit that makes me think, “I’m so not impressed, this is nothing like a FPS.” But then, months later, my grandma and me can have a conversation about video games that would have never happened prior and I’ll feel that ol’ Nintendo pride coming back. May have to wait for it, but it’ll be there again

John Kershaw

Microsoft wavebird, or whatever it’s called is my only prediction, maybe the new Xbox SKU too. We’ll see.

Patrick Steen

Mirror’s Edge tops the billings for me. Experiencing the first in-depth gameplay of this stunner would convince me that the beauty isn’t just skin deep. Beyond the gorgeous and distinct visuals there’s going to be a solid and fulfilling first-person action adventure game.

Despite Square Enix’s advertised E3 listings, I am hoping for a Final Fantasy XIII surprise. Perhaps Sony will host the big reveal. The much-loved Final Fantasy VII might even get another day in the sun… Keep your eyes on SE. Oh and I look forward to my fellow Riptener’s getting high on energy drinks. Go find Solid Snake’s Regain Drink chaps! *Salute*

Chad Lakkis

I predict that a few hundred thousand gamers dressed in master chief suits will crash E3 and eat all of our food. A fight will then ensue and all members of the press will have their heads bashed in with gravity hammers shortly thereafter. This will cripple coverage of the event and E3 will cease to exist next year.

In the event this does NOT happen, I believe Capcom will impress everyone with RE5’s perfectly balanced mix of Caucasian, African American, and Latino zombies. I believe there will be a mad rush to play Mega Man 9 and that Capcom will inform everyone that it was really Mega Man 2 on the last day of the show. I also foresee us being fed mass quantities of food, which we will then wash down with highly caffeinated beverages at a feverish pace.

This is my E3 prediction.

Well, those are our predictions for this years show. Feel free to leave a comment on your E3 predictions as well. We look forward to reading them.

See you all on the show floor… well, some of us will anyway.
