by Chad Lakkis on July 16, 2008 at 11:28 am

Hey readers! Andrew and I were lucky enough to get this one-of-a-kid Mega Man sketch by the original creator, Keiji Inafune. We will be giving you a chance to win it over the next few weeks.

All you have to do is leave a comment below (one comment per reader) telling us why you think this piece of retro awesomeness should be yours. Prove your love for the blue-bomber and win the perfect compliment to Capcom’s upcoming Mega Man 9.

Contest will end at midnight (12:00 am PST) on August 17, 2008. Check out the video of Inafune working his Mega Man magic below. Good luck.

I just create an account just to made a post.

I’m 24. I grow up with the NES and playing Megaman games. The moment I hear about a new game in 8 bit I was very happy.

I can not be any more happy about the decision of making a new Megaman in 8 bit.

I really would like the sketch. With just watching the pic here in my PC, I feel a lot of nostalgia and good memories. And be sure that if I win the sketch, I will take good care of it.

*Sorry for my english, is not my primary language.

    What a chance…

I’ve been a huge Mega Man buff. I’ve beaten all the originals and the X’s and Legends’, but I’ve never tried that network series. I- dont consider them legit!

I don’t really have any mega man fan stuff and i’m such a huge fan. it’d mean so much to have that praising the blue bomber. if i win i promise to get all my friends to come here! i’ll even make it my homepage now ;)

Can’t wait for Mega man 9! I hope Rush comes back!

Mega Man is about shooting, jumping, and fighting FOR EVERLASTING PEACE. Evil will not rest for long, but Mega Man will return to defeat it. I just like the idea of fighting for justice.

Besides that, I like this rare production design of Mega Man’s autograph power that he gets from the unused Autograph Man. I wouldn’t trade Top Man for him though.

How about the cover art of Mega Man 1 for worst reason?

I really dont have much to say to persuade you on how I should recieve this. I’ve played and beaten every Megaman, except maybe some of the GBA and DS ones. I own every Megaman game, including the collections. I bought a PS2 just for some of the Megaman games. I’m a huge fan and the only Megaman merchandise I own are a few action figures that are not really old. They are still in the box. I have a t-shirt or two as well. I really love megaman and have always wanted something like this. I hope I can get this. I made this account just to try and win this. I probably will not win this, but thanks for the chance if I dont. It is really a great prize

My first true love was Mega Man on the NES, and still is. I´m proud of my complete Mega Man classic collection, all originals, as well as other Mega Man games and memorabilia. When 9 was announced, and as an 8-bit game, my jaw dropped to the other side of the planet. The only thing that could make it better is if they released it as an NES cartridge. hehe.

This piece of art would get the perfect place in my collection as a shining centerpiece.

“why you think this piece of retro awesomeness should be yours.”: Beyond my obsessive playing of the original series I can play most of the popular tunes from 1-6 on Piano (learned by ear) and I STILL reminisce (and crank them in my car) when someone new remixes the old tunes. I used to draw MM characters and stages in my notebooks in grade school waiting for 2 or 3 to come out. I had every MM poster I could find in my room, several of which stayed up longer than they probably should have, but that just how much I loved the games. The music and play control are still legendary and the combination of those two things along with the grand challenge of each game is what made MM not just a game, but a full on experience if not an obsession. Who doesn’t remember the hours and hours of marathon runs through the near-final stages trying to beat all of the bosses a second time around without dying? I laughed uncontrollably when the announcement was made that 9 was going to be NES styled, and my face hurt for days afterwards. Kind of like now - I saw a pic of what was supposed to be the box art (looked like MM1) and I’m cracking up - I have emailed and/or called all of my 8bit nerd friends and a few who have no idea what I’m talking about just because I’m so excited. I told my wife at the announcement of a Sept release for MM9 that there would come a Monday in Sept where I would be planted in front of the TV (probably too close to said TV) with the sound cranked up and windows shut for hours on end and to expect expletives and much general frustration with the game adding that she and my daughter should just be ready to avoid the house most of that day. I WILL BE TAKING OFF OF WORK! To add to the collector’s comments, I also own all the NES MM games, all of the GB MM games, MM 1 and 3 on PC, and I bought an extra sealed copy of MM2 just for collector’s sake back in the 90’s. I have beaten them all, though I must admit to have beaten 2 before 1 (it was just too frustrating!). These are the reasons I think this piece of retro awesomeness should be mine. It would immediately be framed and put on the wall in the den.

I think I should win this Mega Man sketch because I am a fan of all the Megaman games. These games were always were a challenge to me and that’s what makes them fun. When I have nothing else to do through the day, I hook up my old NES console and fire up the first megaman and play through it again. When I Heard that Megaman 9 was coming to Wii Ware I nearly crapped myself. I was also excited to see that the graphics were staying true to the original 8bit glory. This Piece of art would be an awesome addition of all things that are Nintendo and Video Games.

I’m 23 years old and I’ve grown up with the blue bomber my entire life. I was born in 85, I had no siblings, no real friends and my parents were always too busy. My parents bought me an NES when I was still just a baby and I would play it during any waking moment. One of my earliest games was Mega Man. It easily became my favorite game that I owned and I would spend countless days playing it. My mother would always be home, due to me being a baby, but would still be too busy for me. She did however, spend time with me and catch onto me playing Mega Man so much. When Mega Man 2 came out, my parents bought it for me, knowing I would love it. To this day, Mega Man 2 is still my favorite game. These games were my life and I couldn’t imagine what I would do without them. Over the years, Mega Man 3 and 4 released and I still couldn’t get over the sheer fun and enjoyment of these games. They were the most fun I would ever have. Mega Man 5 and 6 eventually did reach my game library and joined the ranks of games that I became in love with. Mega Man 7 and 8 released on consoles I never owned, so I never got the chance to love them as much as I loved the earlier games. I did, however, play them at a cousins house and I wish I never had to leave. Each Mega Man game was as amazing as the last to me and I never wanted it to end. As I grew older though, school began to take over my life more and more, as I was being flooded with work and a need to do well. I tried my best to play the Mega Man X games as much as I could, but school took up too much of my time and I couldn’t enjoy the X games as much as I should have. Later on, school grew into being my whole life. I couldn’t afford a Gameboy Advance or a DS, so I never got to play the Mega Man Zero, Battle Network, Star Force or ZX games. I’m fully aware of emulation, but I love Capcom too much to play their games for free. I missed out on a lot of the series, but the Classic Mega Man always had a special place in my heart, as it was the greatest fun I ever had. Having just left college now, and on my way to starting a family and getting a career in the medical industry, I took a nice relaxing break from all the school work, which has consumed my life over the past lot of years, and sat down, hooked up my NES and played the Mega Man games. Just as I remembered, they really did make my life worth living, they’re just as fun as they used to be. A few weeks after this, a close friend of mine told me the news about Mega Man 9 to be on WiiWare. I was beyond excited when I heard this news. I couldn’t contain the joy I was feeling. I’m solely buying a Wii, just for Mega Man 9 and I know it’ll revive my childhood and keep me as happy as I need to be. I’ll never forget the games and I hope my future kids can enjoy the games as much as I did.

As soon as I heard that Capcom was making a new Mega Man for the classic series I was filled with excitement. It had always been my favorite of all the incarnations of the Mega man world. When it was brought to my attention that the game would feature an 8-bit graphical and audio design and art style, I can not begin to express the joy that filled my heart and em brassed every inch of my entire body. There was something about it’s style that I love, being able to sit down and complete it it in one sitting, being able to chose my level and making the game as difficult as I want it to be. Even throwing my controller in a rage of frustration can humorously remind me of how foolish I could be at times.

The trailer and game play footage that we received just made it that much more gratifying for me. Being able to hear ALL those sounds again, from the pellets firing to mega man exploding all while a simple yet amazing music tune played throughout the background. Tears literally began to run down my face. It made me realize how much I loved my child hood and that if I were dying while I write this I would not regret the life I have lived thus far.

Being in my 20s, it’s weird. I had received a NES for my FIRST Christmas and of course, ever since I could pick up a controller I had been into gaming. One year, I had to go get a shot, I didn’t cry and was rewarded with a game, eventually in tradition every time I had gotten a shot at the doctors’, I was rewarded with the game of my choice, one choice happened to be MM2. I remember running in my home and inserting it into the NES. For some reason, I had fallen in love with the Airman and Woodman stages, their songs and level design just enticed me. Unfortunately, I was never very good back then, I remember dying so many times from the Hot Dogs of Wood man stage and platforming the clouds of the thunder bolt robots in Airman’s stage. The VERY few time I remember getting to the Robot Master stages I just got my butt handed to me. I eventually, I had gotten Mega Man 3 and Sparkman and Shadowman were my favorite stages in that game.

I had always liked drawing cartoons (I still do), and I remember how much I liked designing and drawing some of my own robot masters and showing the kids at my school how to draw them during class. I liked showing people how to do something that I loved, and just made me that much more eager to get back home to play the games some more.

Eventually I did move and somewhere along the move I had lost my copy of Megaman 3, as well as Super Mario Bros. 2. I had gotten the SNES and Super Mario World and DK Country to compensate the loss, later also the Genesis and some Sonic games and those definitely kept me occupied, but in the back of my mind I still craved Mega Man. Everyday in the morning I would watch the Mega Man show before, school, I don’t remember, much about it back then, besides cut man and guts man, mainly because they were basically in every episode.

I never had very many friends, but when I moved to my new school everything changed in first grade. On the bus I had met a friend and we use to throw crayons outside of the bus at the kids walking home. Eventually he moved away though. Later he came back in fourth grade, and one day I was invited over, I remember coming up to his room and seeing so many video games and systems that I thought I had died and gone to heaven. I remembering seeing mostly all of the Mega Man games that were out at the time, I learned so much about Mega Man from him (we even nicknamed him the gaming master), he introduced me to the X series, I remember going over after school everyday just to play games with all of my friends going to sleep overs, soon we had our own little group and by high school we had all become VERY, VERY close. One day we were all over and one of our friends called up a girl he liked, he got rejected, and even though he was upset, all it took was a round of MMX to wear away the pain. The fun we had together, overrode anything and everything. I love my friends, and I loved sharing the hobby of gaming with them. I can here the laughter and joy (along wit frustration)we shared echoing in the back of my mind as I type this. I think can thank Mega Man for that.

Having pretty much grown up during the main evolution of the video game industry, being able to see how the industry evolved and how much it brought joy into my life as well as others, made me realize how much I want to be a part of this industry, being able to create characters that are remembered and loved for decades, just as Keiji Inafune has done with Mega Man.

Next year I will be going to the Art Institute of Chicago. Hopefully, if I keep focused and stay dedicated to what I have grown to love (art and video games), I will be able to reach the goal of becoming part of the industry that has given so many artistic views and sparked my love for video games.

When I play Mega Man 9 this September, I will go to my friends house and play it. I want all of the stresses and pains of being an adult to temporarily wash away, and I want to experience that feeling with my friends, who make me happy to be who I am and made me realize recently I have purpose in life.

I thank the original Mega Man for being a strong part of that reason, to me, he is like the brother I always wanted. He is a part of my memories and he is a part of me, the best part, my childhood, something we should never forget.

Why should I win the Mega Man sketch? Because I’m a die-hard Mega Man fan. I’ve collected and played the entire original series (I even bought the Mega Man 10th anniversary Gamecube game, so I own them twice now). I STILL play Mega Man 2 and 3 (my favorites) all the time (just beat Mega Man 2 on difficult again last night). I’ve collected most of the X series (Except X2 and X3, because of how expensive they are. A college student has to focus on school related bills first and foremost. No worries, though. I’ll get them eventually). I’ve beaten Mega Man Legends 1 and 2 (I gave my copies to a cousin. I’m gonna mold him to be a Mega Man fanatic, too). You can beat your *** that I’ll be buying Mega Man 9, day 1. I’m hoping that it stays true to it’s hair-pulling, controller throwing difficulty (Though, after watching the E3 videos, this seems like something I won’t have to hope too much for. It already looks difficult). The music is completely reminiscent of the NES games and I couldn’t be happier.

If none of this let’s you see just how much of a Mega Man fanatic I am, just take a look at my browser’s theme:
    http://i287.photobucket.com/albums/ll121/Fockbox/MegaMan.jpg

I can guarantee you that, should you choose me to receive this gift, it will never be sold and will hang on my wall (it seems already framed, but if it isn’t I’ll frame it myself) for most of my life. I say most of my life, because I’ll be passing it down to my children as an heirloom of sorts.

I could go on a long speech about how I deserve it because I’m a huge fan, Ive beaten all the games, it brings back memories, etc. but I wont because thats not what should win this contest.

What should win this contest is heart and passion. The person that should win this contest should be the person that you think has the most drive and determination in there life. It should be the person who like a young Keiji Inafune gives there all for what they enjoy and what they do.

This piece of art should not just be given to someone who will look at it like a picture of megaman but rather it should be given to someone who sees it as a symbol of importance, a badge of honour. This art should represent to that person the strength and courage needed to do your best every day. They should be shouting at the world, “I AM A PERSON OF GREAT TALENT AND I DO NOT GIVE UP!” They should be standing for what they believe in and showing no signs of doubt in themselves and what they do. This art should mean the world to the person you give it too. It should become a part of them for all eternity.

The person that receive this art should be one of a kind, just as Keiji is. So all I ask of you to do is to choose the winner carefully and to who ever wins this contest good luck to you in whatever you do.

    Sincerely,

    Daniel G. Kelly

My devotion towards MegaMan has been going on for fifteen years.

I have always relied on the franchise when things looked bleak in my life. When someone close in my family would pass away, I’d turn to MegaMan to help me pull through my grief, envying his courage.

When the bullies at school got me down, I’d retreat to my copy of MegaMan 6 to “make me feel strong.”

Now an assistant teacher for a local elementary school kids, I’d constantly share with them personal stories about my favorite video game character.

There’s something magical about MegaMan, something that many video game characters in this day and age lack. I don’t know what exactly it is, but my god, this character has managed to touch me in more ways than one.

Owning this sketch would bring me closer to my long time hero, and boy would it make a great show and tell gift for my students in the fall.

I wish I could prove how awesome I think MegaMan is in words, but it just wouldn’t do him justice. That’s why I got some nifty photos for you!

I setup about all the MegaMan stuff my family and I have collected over the years:
    http://i195.photobucket.com/albums/z196/kenshinmeowth/danielcontest1.jpg

My brothers were really helpful in taking the photos, and even setup a cool collage that shows some of the interesting MegaMan games and toys up close:
    http://i195.photobucket.com/albums/z196/kenshinmeowth/collage.jpg

Finally, I figured I could show off all of the art I have drawn in tribute to Capcom’s rocking mascot. There’s a lot of it, and I doubt I’ll ever stop making even more:

I’m really excited that Capcom is finally bringing back Inafune’s original creation in a 9th installment. To have an sketch signed by Inafune himself of MegaMan the day MegaMan 9 launches would be a dream come true, so I’m hoping for the best.

I should win that because I am one of people who appreciates CAPCOM’s genius talents, whether it’s Keiji Inafune, Ikeno, Bengus, Akiman, Kinu Nishimura or Edayan. Not only these people but also the creative team that completes the insanely fun, creative and powerful creations that CAPCOM has produced.

Megaman as a childhood memory: That bright sparkle me and my best friends used to take little trips to each other’s houses to figure out. That new boss gives you new ability?! What?! I can beat THAT other boss THAT much easier with that new ability?! Let me try! Let me see!

Growing up with such fond memories and finding other fans who appreciated it and have grown to respect and contribute to it also has become an integral part of the experience.

Now I want what could possibly be one of the most magical things I can ever hold, an original sketch of a classic CAPCOM icon out of my childhood by one of the magicians I used to read about in magazine articles and fan postings.

    Yes, give me.

Why should I have the art, here is why. I have been a fan of MegaMan since the first NES game. I have played all the MegaMan games; Original, X, Legend, EXE, Starforce, plus a good majority of the spin-offs (Tron Bonne, Soccer, Power Battle). I have enjoyed MegaMan for 20 years now and for my 30th birthday, I got a MegaMan tattoo. I found the design from the R20 Rockman & Rockman X Official Complete artbook I found. Here is a picture: http://www.digitalrookie.com/mmtattoo.jpg. This is a sign of a TRUE fan of MegaMan and the artwork of Keiji Inafune.

Okay, so I registered for this contest. However I’m not trying to win this for me (as much as I do love old-school Mega Man). I’m trying to win this for my fiance. He is a HUGE Mega Man Fanboy.

So I want to talk about why he should win it:

Aside from being a devoted Mega Man fan even when the Mega Man games have been pure garbage, he has kept many posters, figures and games relating for Mega Man over the years. He kept the Mega Man 2 Nintendo Power poster and has it hanging in our apartment (it’s a good thing I’m a hardcore gamer too huh?). He has spent the last fifteen years importing Mega Man X figures from Japan and putting them together. He must have about twenty of them now, which we have proudly set on our bookshelf, next to all my Dragon Quest toys.

In the late 90’s he once maintained a Mega Man fan-site, until the demands of his college degree (chemistry) consumed him. He determines which systems he buys SOLEY on which systems have Mega Man games on them. He has both the Sega Saturn and PlayStation versions of Mega Man X4. Yes, he bought both.

He has the most recent Rockman artbook that came out earlier this year, and now in light of the Mega Man 9 announcement feels that the book needs to be changed because it is no longer the complete works of Mega Man. He’s a nerd. He also plays Mega Man games extremely well, which gives him decent cred as a hardcore gamer. Those games are tough.

There are a lot of devoted Mega Man fans in this thread, but I wanted to at least give my fiance a chance amongst the nerds.

    Thanks ^_^

I’m not going to make up some lame excuse that I should win the pic. I don’t have cancer, I’m not some kid that’s sick, I don’t want to sell it on eBay, and (unfortunately) I don’t have a friend who loves Mega Man enough to give the sketch to.

I don’t have a whole lot of gaming stuff. I love Mega Man, and Mega Man 2 was the first game I played. All I can say is that if I won the sketch, I’d cherish it forever. It would be framed lovingly and set on my wall.

    Please, and Thank You.

Because nothing of mine is ever original when it comes in a book.

I just happened to use StumbleUpon and saw your page about the XBox E 74… then I noticed the awesome Mega Man sketch you had there. I had to check it out.

Like some of the other people here, I been also been a fan of the Mega Man series since the original Mega Man game was released on NES. There were the good times when I remember playing all the Mega Man games at my house, and there were the bad times, like when I let my friend borrow Mega Man 2 and in a fit of rage caused by not being able to beat Quick Man, he yanked the controller out of the NES… and sent it crashing to the floor. He destroyed the best game I had (at the time.. MM3 had not yet come out). There were even the in-between times, like when I was 7 and I broke my arm (ouch), but I got to pretend I was Mega Man with my cast-cannon arm (cool).

My interest goes beyond the games. I have Mega Man manga, toys, guide books, pins, posters, drawings (Here is a large framed picture of Mega Man that I drew freehand and colored with pencils. You can see it here: http://www.bluebomber.com/mmposter.JPG ). I’ve enjoyed almost every Mega Man game, but especially one in particular: Rockman and Forte. As you can see, I have a website at bluebomber.com that is my vehicle for this game, back since people were still calling it Mega Man 9.

I was around when YnT was translating this game into English from the original Japanese for the SNES (I still have the cart for the SNES version, and both the English and Japanese GBA carts). This was before we got the official GBA translation and not many knew what this game was all about. I did my best to publicize how we Americans got ripped off by not getting a great game, and bluebomber.com is the culmination of years of hard work.

I like to believe that in some way, my efforts in getting people to write letters to Capcom, the forums I created (the now defunct UMMF - Ultimate Mega Man Forums, formed in conjunction with 9 other Mega Man websites), the petitions we signed, and my website and others like it were instrumental in getting Rockman and Forte translated and brought to the USA.

I’m a big fan of the Mega Man series, and this piece would have a great home here with me. I would also like to share it with the rest of the world by scanning it and making it available on my website. That way everyone can enjoy this piece of artwork for years to come.

Lastly, I would like to include that I will dress my 1st born child as Mega Man, with an excellent homemade costume, on its 1st Halloween and I will send you an autographed copy of my photo, just for bestowing upon me this excellent piece of art! (I also plan on framing it and hanging it in my living room for everyone to see)

This is a great contest, I hope you pick me as your winner!

Some time after revisiting with a friend the Megaman games, I heard the announcement of Megaman 9.

At first we thought “So what? Another one of those spin-offs…”. But then we heard it would be an actual megaman game, and a NES one at that, and now I heard it will even have the flickering sprites and old 8-bit sound.

Each one of those moments was so joyful that I ended up playing the NES games again.

If I the sketch, I will not keep it to myself, I will give to this friend as a token of the good times we had playing Megaman.

Well, like most people here I’m a die-hard fan. Of all the Megaman games and series that is. I’ve played them all and finished them all, not a day passes by without playing/finishing a Megaman game. The only music in my car I listen to are the Zero and ZX remastered soundtracks and the Megaman 20th rock & techno mixes.

The day I got introduced to Megaman I was very very sad actually, but I everything worked out for the best in the end.
We had a dog that would always pee in the house whenever he was alone for more than a few hours. Both my parents worked so my mom had to clean everytime she got home from work and as soon as she woke up. My parents asked me if they could give the dog to an elderly couple, so my mom didn’t have to clean up his mess all the time and so he wouldn’t be alone anymore.
I loved that dog so I said no, I was too young to understand how my mom suffered from this. So they tried to bribe me by offering me 2 NES games if they could give the dog away but I refused again. When I was playing my NES one day, my mom took him away anyway so I was very sad and cried a lot. But she kept her word and I could choose 2 NES games I wanted. I had never heard of Megaman before, so I just picked Megaman & Megaman 2 based on the cover art. I actually LIKED the covers, believe it or not.
Looking back, I realise that everyone came out a winner, the dog was probably a lot happier with more company, my mom didn’t have so much work anymore and me, I got 20 years of fun that Megaman has given me.

Now why I want to win this. I’m a European and fellow European Megaman fans will agree with me when I say that being a Megaman fan here isn’t easy. Games being released over a year later than in the US (ZX games), sometimes not at all (Collections, MM6), sometimes content is removed (again ZX), sometimes Capcom spreads so few games that they’re impossible to find or cost tons of money (X2,X3,MM7), merchandise never makes it across the ocean, … We are often left in the cold and if we want any merchandise we have to import it from Japan or the US, plus pay import taxes. For once I’d like to see something as great as this go to a European or an Australian, the ones that have to struggle for every Megaman game, cd, dvd, figure they have. Personally if that European were me, I’d frame it and hang it above my bed, so I’d always be remembered of the 20 years of fun Rockman has given me.

I haven’t seen this reason yet, but I’m a girl, which means I have boobs.

If you haven’t noticed, girls with boobs who enjoy gaming are generally super-duper-awesome-riffic.

In all honesty, boobs and gender aside, it would totally be a darn awesome thing to win, hang on my wall, and be the envy of all of my friends. Or at least my brother, who throws things at me when I whistle Quick Man’s theme, because he can’t whistle.

because I f’in loved MM3! It’s the only one I ever played. I recently played it again all the way through, but I had to cheat cuz unfortunately I also f’in suck at it now. :(
But I didn’t cheat when I played it all those years ago as a kid. I swear. Couldn’t anyway because I had a famicom and no game genie. Instead I watched my brother play it to Wily’s stages and memorized the password to get there, so I only played from there. That’s not cheating. Just good memory.

I’ve been a Megaman fan since the beginning. Many people grew up playing Mario and/or Sonic, not me though it was Megaman for me. Ever since the first one i have followed the blue bomber through thick and thin. Playing through all the great games and all the not so awesome games. I haven’t found a Megaman game I didn’t enjoy, mainly because of the fact that it was Megaman.

There isn’t a Megaman game I haven’t played and beaten. Every title that gets released in North America I get my hands on and play it through. I am usually the one informing everybody of any news on the blue bomber.

I have every single Official Megaman soundtrack, and every soundtrack ripped from the games I own. I can identify any robot master from their song for both the classic and X series. When I say every song I mean over 1600 songs in my library that I constantly listen to when playing any game, as the music is usually better then any other soundtrack. I can still remember when I first heard Wily castle 1 from Megaman 2. I almost died because of how incredible that song was. It still is my favorite one ever and I listen to it almost daily.

I am working on becoming a game developer now because of the influence a simple game like Megaman can have on a person. I want to be able to make something just as awesome that can affect people the way he has impacted me.

Having just moved into a new apartment this would go great in my room hanging on the wall! I’m so excited just about the opportunity to win this picture! My friend called me at work to tell me about this contest, and here I am not working to enter it. I hope I win this as it would make my life. Thanks for the chance at this.

Ahh, I hope I’m not too late!! Please don’t decide yet, at least give mine a read!

Hi everyone! I joined Ripten just for the opportunity to win this one-of-a-kind sketch. I’m probably one of the youngest people trying to win here - turning 17 in a few weeks - so I can’t say I’ve been playing Mega Man since he came out due to not being born yet. I don’t have every game ever made and I don’t have the money to amass a huge collection of Mega Man memorabelia, but I still believe that I deserve to win this sketch.

Being the only girl in the family besides my mom (oooo a girl gamer, those are rare), I was pretty much raised by my brother’s video games. Gaming icons like Mario, Link, and Kirby were all familiar to me… including a certain blue robot boy named Mega Man. I always loved the Mega Man games, even before I was old enough to pick up a controller and fully know what I was doing. For one, he’s adorable. Who couldn’t love a little robot blasting through bad guys to save the world? I know I could. When I was around 5 or 6, I started playing (or rather, trying to play) the games by myself. I never got too far in them, in fact I don’t think I ever really beat any of the robot masters, but I had a blast trying. Wether it was the ingenious and sometimes fustrating little puzzles (those disappearing blocks will be the death of me) or the silly and colorful enemies in the stage, something about it appealed to me more than any other game.

One fond thing about my childhood besides the games was my Mega Man figure. Sure, it was the extremely bizarre American cartoon Mega Man, but he was my favorite toy of all when I was little. After all, he’s still Mega Man! One thing I remember clearly when I was about 5 was me on the porch in my backyard, playing with Mega Man. I would go, “Look out, Mega Man! Dr. Wily is going to beat you! Aahhhh!!” and hurl him off of the porch in defeat. But then, he would come back - I would run down and go grab him. I’d repeat this over and over, because something about it was just super fun (thinking about it now, I guess I just liked throwing things). I also accidentally hit my aunt’s car with Mega Man, making a small dent - I never told her, of course. I still have the figure after all these years - he now stands next to my Wii, guarding it from any robot masters who want to take it… or maybe just looking cool.

Another thing - this time I was 11 - was when I absolutely loved Zero. Every nerdy/geeky preteen girl needs some pretty character to obsess about, and while others seemed to choose someone from Inuyasha, I chose Zero. I can remember it now - I thought he was “soooo cute! ^__^” and I even had a folder of Zero images on my computer that I filled with drawings or pictures of the blonde reploid that I found on the internet. Over half of the pictures I had drawn myself… very badly if I might add, haha. Even now I think he’s an awesome character (though I don’t describe him with words like “kawaii!!” anymore). He’s tough, badass, and gets the job done. He has a deeper backstory and personality than most of the other characters in the Mega Man realm, and he fights with both an arm cannon and a beam sabre. How hardcore is that? Because of him (and the enjoyability of Mega Man games), I’ve played almost every Mega Man X game and absolutely loved them. I’ve even read some of the Rockman X manga online that’s been translated by fans - I’d love to purchase them, but I cannot read Japanese. Although the X series isn’t quite as happy and cheerful as the classic series, to say the least, they still have that Mega Man charm about it, and I love it almost as much.

I’d love to say I got into the newer series - Legends, Battle Network, Zero, ZX - but unfortunately I never quite did. I tried Zero, but it was way too hard for me, although I did enjoy what I could play. I tried Battle Network, and thought it was pretty good, but just never quite got into it. They’re good games, but they just don’t do it for me - they don’t have that original classic Mega Man gameplay that I grew to love as a kid. That’s why I’m very happy that Mr. Inafute drew Mega Man’s classic form - my all-time favorite one of all.

However, there is one other reason I’d like the Mega Man sketch besides my love for the little guy. You see, I am an aspiring illustrator, and I’m hoping to go to an art college to major in Illustration. When I watched the episode of Icons on G4 (back when it was called G4 and the show was called Icons - no clue what it is now) about Mega Man, I was surprised to know that Inafute was an aspiring artist when he was hired by Capcom. I was also shocked to know that they didn’t think his little game known as Rockman wouldn’t do well at all, and it ended up being a big hit for years to come. It really inspired me how a little artist could get hired by a little company and end up making huge hits and become so well-known and loved. I look up to Inafute for his ability to create the hundreds of characters in the game and make each and every one of them unique and memorable (one of my favorite is Aqua Man and one of the things he says… “I’m Aqua Man, but you can call me Handsome Guy!”). He’s really a great and imaginative artist, and I hope I can be as successful as him one day.

Thus, having the picture wouldn’t just proclaim my love for the super fighting robot (fighting to save… the world!), but would also be an incredibly inspiring picture, telling me that if a man with an idea of a little rock and roll robot can make it big, then perhaps I can make it big, too. Thanks for this opportunity, and I hope you pick somebody who truly deserves this wonderful sketch.
