Buzz Trivializes PS3 Home

by Andrew Podolsky on July 28, 2008 at 3:25 pm

The astonishingly popular PS2 and PS3 quiz show game, Buzz!, will have a room in the upcoming Home interface on the PS3. According to a blog by one of the designers of the Buzz! Home space (which he calls the Buzz: Road Show), players will be able to stand on various colored lights to submit their answers, and up to 64 people will be able to play at a time.

In the article, Cumron Ashtiani, the designer, shows some early concept art and talks about his feelings on the Home creative process:

The Avatars are part of the Home system and so not customisable for their surroundings. I think stylistically the characters for Home could have done with a bit more exaggeration and style. There were several technical limitations with he tools at that time in that we couldn’t have animated objects, no characters other than the Home avatars or lights and so movement could only be provided with shader based UV scrolling.

Check out his blog for some really amazing looking artwork. Of all the things I’ve heard and read about Home so far, this might be the most interesting– and I’m not even a big fan of Buzz. Somehow to me this just seems to be Sony taking Microsoft’s idea of letting your avatars compete in “1 vs. 100″ and just running numerous laps around it.

Are you kidding me? Stuff like this was shown more then a year ago when Home debuted, the potential was there and these designs are over a year old, and you are saying SONY is taking an idea from MICROSOFT about Avatars? MS is taking the whole damn thing from Sony, Avatars for 360 were JUST announced and you say that this is an idea Home is taking from 360 avatars? No, this is an idea that has existed for almost a year and a half now, but people have been to dumb to see it until now.

    Such a pity.

    @Sentry I second that.

PS HOME is rife with amazing potential! I can’t wait to see what developers like Square Enix, Kojima Productions and others could do within HOME if they took the time to!

Hey all, just to be clear, of course Sony isn’t taking Microsoft’s idea in that they’ve stolen it– I just meant to say, they’re doing a much better job with the concept than Microsoft, from what I’ve seen so far. Thanks for commenting though! See you in the Buzz Road Show.

I am looking forward to “home” but I have one question…or maybe a statement, why do avatars have to randomly break out into some faggy dance?
they did that in Myst on line as well? what is with that? do the developers think people do that in real life? you know, your standing waiting for a bus and all of a sudden you just start gyrating your hips like a dickhead for no goddamn reason. WTF? do people ask for that functionality in their avatars? is there like a bunch of shitheads out there e-mailing and calling Sony demanding this??!?! “damnit! Sony, you better make my avatar gyrate wildly on the streets of Home or I ain’t getting no PS3!!”

Will we ever see Home… I start to doubt it… 3 delays now… or is that more?

    Soon Flyz.

Mad: It’s an optional move – there are 10’s of them. People appear to like that one…because it’s so ridiculous.

Hell yeah! Sony fucking invented Avatars. I mean, Wii totally ripped THEM off. None of MS or Sony’s crap is at all an attempt to tap into Wii’s “casual gamer” market at all.

Sony was working on Home mid PS2 days. This has been in the works for a long time. Mii’s are nothing but a coincidence.

I had the idea for a Halo-branded Mountain Dew before the first Halo was even released. They totally stole my idea, even though I didn’t mention it until after Halo-branded Mountain Dew existed. Must just be a coincidence then.

Patric S., because it is ridiculous?!?! I think that if people wanted something weird to do in home, make a bowling game that you rip your own head off and use it as the ball. I cannot even see where random dancing would be considered funny. it was damn stupid in Myst on-line and more so in Home.

Yes Dan, that is a coincidence.

Mad: Well they wouldn’t be doing it unless they found it funny! It’s optional. And you can listen to your own music in Home, and let other people listen to it – so you can all dance to it together.
