Wii 2: Iwata Confirms Nintendo’s Next Console Already In Development

by Andrew Podolsky on July 30, 2008 at 4:22 pm

From the “perpetual next-gen” department comes this totally expected tidbit. The old news: Nintendo’s working on a follow-up to the Wii. The new news: Confirmation comes directly from President “It print money!” Iwata.

Iwata told Forbes magazine, “We are always preparing for the next hardware. We are under development. But the hardware is a kind of box that consumers reluctantly buy in order to play our games.”

A successor to the Wii is clearly inevitable, but the question is when and to what degree this new console will change Nintendo’s winning format. Will they buckle to demand for HD output, or integrate better online play? Will we see incremental steps towards better motion control, like the Wii MotionPlus? Or maybe something more radical, like the awesome head tracking demo we saw a few months ago?

Rest assured, Microsoft and Sony are already working on their next consoles as well. But Nintendo seems to be confident in setting the standard for casual gamers, expanding the marketplace while they irritate long-time, dedicated gamers.

So what do you think will be included in Wii 2? A new Brain Age that actually scans your brain? Holographic Pokemon? Wii Music packed in with a Showbiz Pizza Band? Who can predict what Nintendo has planned next?

I’m both excited and worried about this.
If they keep trying to revolutionize gaming like they are, they might stop making games the good old fashioned way. :/
Of course they could just take the Wii and give it better online play, HD, and some new features.

Wow! the Holographic games will be killer with the fact i read that they (Nintendo) holds a patent for holographic disks but to think to actually be able to see a life size, hopefully not, Rayquaza, dragon pokemon who’s the maskot of emerald.

I think it would be really cool for them to make their next console be holographic. I liked the idea picture at the top of this article. but i think it should still be able to play Wii and Gamcube games so i don’t have to have two cosoles. It also HAS TO be in HD and the motion control needs to be much better if it uses motion control. i can’t wait to see what they have in store for the next console.

Just a matter of how long this will take nintendo to make right. :/
How do we know that the Holographic console will not have lots of faults.. ??? :S
