GC 08: New Details and Trailer for Mad World

by Demi Adejuyigbe on August 20, 2008 at 4:08 pm

Earlier this year, Platinum Games and Sega announced MadWorld, a grisly Wii game with a focus on vehement, outlandish violence, and beating your enemies to a pulp that would make of Tropicana jealous. Today at GC, Platinum Games has brought us some new details on the game, as well as a trailer showcasing the sadist ways of the game’s main protagonist.

Like all bad asses, you play as Jack, a guy with a generic name and a motorcycle, complete with flames riding out of the back, because its not a motorcycle without outlandish flames tapering down the backside.

Like the best protagonists, he wears goggles on his head that you’ll probably never see him wear, he’s had one of his limbs (specifically his right arm) replaced with a chainsaw, making it pretty damn hard to write with anything other than his enemies’ blood, and of course he’s built like a fucking brick house.

Chances are, he’s got a spitfire mouth full of witty insults about your mother and a lexicon that would surprise even Kevin Smith. Marcus Fenix, eat your heart out.

According to Platinum Games, MadWorld will be full of quick-time events that you can pull of with the Wiimote and Nunchuk, and if done correctly, you’ll be able to completely obliterate your enemies in ways that make even Charles Manson squeal, such as ripping out someone’s heart, and squashing it in your fist like a stress ball.

MadWorld will be full of unobtrusive mini-games that will be implanted into the game’s environment. In the demo Sega showed to the press, Jack turned on a machine that led to the beginning of a mini-game called Death Press, where your task is to hack & slash through as many bad guys in one minute.

The machine throws down a spiked anvil into the pit, so the object of the game is to throw as many people as you can under the anvil before it smashes down on them. Even during the demo, Jack shows off as many ways to kill people as he possibly can, such as smashing tires on people’s heads, decapitation via street sign, and of course, finishing it all off by smashing the body into a trash can. The game makes note of these accomplishments by noting what you did to score so high.

The demo finished off with more eccentric stunts, such as riding down the side of a building (which for some reason, always reminds me of that one level in Elite Beat Agents rather than Ghost Rider) and fighting game boss, Herr Frederick Von Twirlenkiller, who sports two enormous turbines for hands that create tornadoes that envelop and destroy any in its path.

Being ever so careful to keep you on the edge of your seats, the demo ends right before Herr Frederick Von Twirlenkiller (I plan to use that name as often as I possibly can) gets attacked by Jack. Of course, the trailer does show the stunning conclusion of the boss fight- a chainsaw to the cerebellum. Ouch.

Personally, I’m definitely excited for the chance to throw bulky hordes of enemies into moving locomotives, and I plan to keep a look out for this game and its tentative release in Q1 of 2009. For now, MadWorld is a Wii exclusive, and until further notice, is Rating Pending, though I’m sure the ESRB will be bringing back the Early Childhood rating for this title alone.
