GC 08: Space Invaders Takes On 9/11 - Aliens Blow Up World Trade Center
by Kev Lochun on August 20, 2008 at 4:17 pm

“What do you think would be best to celebrate 30 years of Space Invaders? Oh I know, let’s go to Leipzig and parody the destruction of the World Trade Center!”
How I would love to have sat in on that meeting when Taito decided that this was a good idea, let alone a fitting tribute to a classic title. But they did, and according to Kotaku you can see a non-interactive display of typical Taito invaders zapping the Twin Towers at Leipzig right now, apparently replete with leapers in all their 8-bit glory.
Yet it’s not meant to be a game – it’s an art exhibit.
It’s the work of French-American artist Douglas Edric Stanley, who sees Space Invaders as a “social tale that can be related to historical tales without losing its poetic power.”
Actually, I wish I was making this up. Taito have yet to comment. More on Stanley here.

Seeing it as an art exhibit, and with the artists thoughts on the matter, does make me think it’s actually quite a good piece. The fact that you have such an iconic videogame juxtaposed with such an iconic image of world history does, in my humble opinion, leave a striking impression. Good art that.

Ok Kershey, I am going to send a bunch of people to your home to kill you and your family, everyone they have ever loved or befriended, and then…I will set up an easel outside, smoke a fat cigar, and proceed to paint the aftermath.
I went to a fancy art school, and this is just poor taste.

10-4 Chad, that is really bad taste and screams “media whore” rather than “artist”.
on August 20, 2008 8:07 pm
So what do we do, cry about it? It’s pretty easy to simply not look at it, if you don’t like it.

take it easy DavidGX, no one is “crying” just making observations about a tasteless piece of “art”.

@Chad,
as long as it’s in black and white.

@Kershey,
How about MadWorld style — black and white with red all over?

I don’t know what you Americunt are whining about. 3000 morons died on 9/11. Big whoop. Millions died in WW2. You ameriwhores killed countless innocent Japanese. Do you mourn that yearly? Nope. 9/11 was a gift from God, an you stupid americans didn’t even get the message. Hopefully 9/11 part 2 will come and it’ll go through your thick, stupid, americunt dullard skulls. You aren’t the most important country on earth - in fact your lives are just a little more useless. Who gives a fuck about 9/11? It’s been 7, going on 8, years. Grow the fuck up and quit bitching. Especially you, Chad. You bitch and moan over 9/11 levels in video games - IT’S A FUCKING VIDEO GAME, GROW UP YOU SIMPLETON. Maybe you should have died in 911, shit.
