Some screen grabs from the recently released demo of the PlayStation 3 version of BioShock show some rather pixelated textures when compared to the Xbox 360 version. While this is just a demo, the retail release is just over two weeks away. Is that enough time to fix this issue?

Screen comparisons and 2K’s response follow.

Xbox 360

PlayStation 3

These screens (blatantly stolen from the BioShock forum on Giant Bomb) clearly show a slight difference in quality, which apparently is leading some people to cancel their pre-orders of the game. Elizabeth Tobey, 2K Community Manager, had the following to say about it:

“When we saw a post asking about issues found in the demo, we jumped on it immediately. And you know what, you’re right. The texture in the PS3 demo of the downed Big Daddy does not match our level of quality either. This slipped by. We admit it. However, I want to assure you that this is an exception, and not a rule, and while I regret this oversight, we put a lot of love into making this game look amazing for the PS3 and I’m sure that when you play the rest of the demo you will agree that the textures are not all like this one instance.

As for the other issues and concerns, we are currently diligently working to replicate any bugs, and will report back to you with what we find. Thank you for your vigilance here and moving forward.”

I’m fairly confident that 2K doesn’t want to put out a turd, but we’ll just have to wait and see what (if anything) slips by when it releases on October 21st.

*UPDATE: Contrary to the vocal PS3 defenders, new screenshots have surfaced that show a blurry PS3 BioShock when compared to the Xbox 360 version. Head here to see the images.

Bioshock looks better on my PS3 than on the PCs and 360’s I’ve seen it on, but maybe that’s just because I’m a fanboy.

I believe that’s the exception - the textures everywhere else are fine - as is said in the quote. i wouldn’t stop a game because of one bad texture on that downed Big Daddy.

Why on earth do people base how a game is going to look on a demo? If we based how LittleBigPlanet was going to perform based on the beta? Or Resistance 2 on the beta? Demos are often older builds with some filler stuff in there. This as happened a million times guys. I don’t understand how people can make news out of a demo. I don’t care when it’s being released after the demo. The demo is an older build. I mean even look at some reviewers who get not quite finished games to review. Even in those late stages, you can find some bugs, framerate issues, filler… :/

I played the demo too and can confirm that big daddy’s textures are weak.

It is more than possible,(or was)almost fact that a game that uses Unreal Engine 3 looks better on 360.
However, there is also a possibility that this precise shots against PS3 are from PC.Just a bell ringing in my head.

I guess they probably ported it from 360 instead of starting anew. They should’ve get all those spe’s to unload the RSX memory from lighting and physics. But then again, what do I know?;what can we know when precise steps in development are almost never made public because of marketing reasons?

    Note to self:Buy in platinum.

Of course you arent a fanboy Darius…You expect me to believe that you are going to base a 300+ purchase based on one game which in one instance in a demo shows less pixels than a full published game which is admittedly inferior based on features than the ps3 version???

    One game???

    Right…

Wow! who is this Landis guy? it is so obvious that he hates the PS3. Yes the PS3 is blurrier, but so what? other than that, it looks exactly the same. So why dont you stop nitpicking like a little hating bitch, and realize that its not that big a difference. I beat the 360 version way back when it first came out and I’ve downloaded the PS3 version and it is blurrier, but when you think about the fact that the PS3 is limited by its 256mb of video memory compared to the 360’s ability to more easily access 512mb, than you gotta realize just how good the PS3 really is doing, cuz i dont see twice the texture quality going on, on the 360 version. But fanboys will be fanboys, and not understand. Fucking fanboys, they should all be taken out back and shot. Where is Hitler when you need him, (just kidding) bitches.

And p.s. Landis get off 360s nuts, and stop hating, hater! And how could a website so blantantly show their bias? what kind of journalism do we have going here? very unprofessional

Huh? So you are saying “the PS3 is gimped by its memory but still does okay” like that is some kind of excuse? Not to mention the fact that you completely misunderstand the memory difference between the two consoles. Justifying WHY it looks worse doesn’t change the fact that it looks worse.

And I am super professional because I wear a hat that says “professional journalist”. That being said, please shut the fuck up and lick my balls.

Coz: The differences here is nothing to do with memory - it’s a texture streaming problem.
