I'd think that the fact that the Chimera are a virulent plague that is spreading its influence over humanity, only adding to their ranks by those they capture in abttle and infect, and have already taken over Europe, Africa, and probably continental Asia if AFAO is to be believed, makes them the tiniest bit more threatening.

@8-Bit Jay
I doubt they have to get permission to show the destruction of the Liberty Bell on the game.

They do need permission, its kind of like LBP, 911 isn't something people ok with seeing in a game and so they have to keep removing that stuff people make. If they destroy the bell in the game an didn't ask of the ok for it, well they could get sue and thats why when it comes to game base on really things in the world they all need to get the ok for it.

Well it shows how dumb you are, they got have rights to even do a city, let alone damage to the things in it (Even in game) or are you just that dumb that you don't even know common sense? Pain had the same problem on the Hollywood stage.

Interesting points all around.
@notwhite - "if you happen to wander off you’ll see that there’s not much there texture wise" ... yah, you've never played R2, admit it. If you had, you wouldn't have said something oh so uninformed. I'm a bit obsessive when it comes to wandering all over in games, it something I like to do and in R2 I am amazed time and time again at some of the beauty in areas that players don't even need to go to in order to get through the levels. Word of advice - comment all you want about a game you enjoy and have PLAYED ... comment all you want about a game you don't like and have PLAYED, but when you just throw in a lie to try and drive your opinion home - you just sound ignorant.
Both games are incredibly fun and really take good care of their respective hardcore fans. Personally I enjoy R2 much more than GeOW2, probably because I enjoyed R:FoM more than GeOW and really got into the story and the characters not only in the game but with the online community that Insomniac created for us.
Multi platform gamers - FTW!!

WaaWaaWaaa...People are upset because the guy said GoW 2's first couple hours were better than R2. Even though he said both were great games.

@Shendow:
I doubt they have to get permission to show the destruction of the Liberty Bell on the game. The Church of England got upset and did something about it because they can. Maybe blowing up the Liberty Bell will piss off a few people, but it won't make the game less likely to be published. Yeah, your argument is pretty weak.

Personally, I'd take Bioshock or Far Cry 2 over either game.

Potential Spoilers

FHaving played both to completion, I have different issues with each. I hated that Insomniac gutted the split-screen coop of the first game in favor of a separate campaign designed around larger groups. I can understand some of the problems trying to shoehorn the single player campaign into coop would have created, but coop fans deserved better than the offline campaign IG provides. On the plus side, load times were non-existent, often masked by cutscenes, and the overall flow was much better than GoW2 (see below). The setpieces were fun to play through and the open areas created lots of opportunities for something other than brute force run-and-gun.

While I liked GoW2's split-screen coop (one thing that the franchise has always done well), the storyline is a hodge-podge of shameless cliches and futile stabs at "gravitas" made all that much worse by some of the most fractured gameplay this side of the Metal Gear Solid franchise (being repeatedly interrupted by a cutscene in the midst of a massive firefight doesn't maintain the flow). Even worse, it has one of the single most mind-numbing levels of any game in recent memory--a completely pointless and annoying "platforming" level whose sole purpose seems to be to try to break up the otherwise monotonous gameplay (run till you see cover, take cover as bullets fly, clear out nest, start moving again...rinse, repeat). If you don't know which level I'm talking about, you either haven't played the game or you were able to stifle the WTF reaction inspired by seeing "Intestinal Teeth" the first time. The audio was also an issue, though one that's harder to explain (if you have surround sound, pay attention to the cutscene of Fenix and Dom talking in Landown beside the derrick--the sound design is HORRIFIC...and that's a controlled cutscene!).

Bottom Line: Gow2 has its strengths--the mechanics are polished, the coop is solid, and the game looks tight--but it wasn't much fun for me, largely due to the poor pacing. R2 has its flaws--poor coop, short duration, and iffy AI--I had more fun playing it thanks to some creative level design, compelling story, and well-done setpieces. Regardless, both are worth playing.

They are not both "perfect 10's". This is not a review. The 'Ten' just means good, whereas a RIP means not good. I don't know why this is, like, the fourth time it has had to be said, but it is only a thumbs up or a thumbs down -- we just use 'RIP' and 'Ten' because that is the name of our site.

Ok i get the fact that you added up the points but the points could be shown instead of stating both being perfect 10s, if they were both in your opinion perfect 10s then the points are even, therefore invalidating this entire thing, i'm just saying that you shouldn't give any fanboys the satisfaction of winning because it will no doubt lead to an arguement about the better console when actually the main aim of this article is to show which is the better game, the fact that they are exclusives are the only reason they are built up so much, hype wise. and mr chad when in sweet jesus did i not show respect, i didn't curse or anything and that is my first and this is most likely my last post on a website which basically tells people who voice their opinions to 'piss off' < ino im basically contradicting myself about the whole opinions stuff and the author having one so don't point out the obvious

To me I think GOW blows on the 360 an is alot better on PC. I mean it doesn't use the full 360 controller, were if you got it for PC it wouldn't be pressing "A" all the time an I bet it has less problems on PC then it does on the 360.

Jayd,

I would never advise anyone to buy a console for one game. If you hate the 360 and own a PS3, stick with it. I have yet to play R2 but I'm sure it is an excellent game.

Jon would know more about the specific issue you claim to be having as he is actively playing the game for review right now.

I own a PS3. I'm a PS3 fanboy also, but I'm not an idiotic one that goes blabbering about things that aren't true. I have 2 questions for Chad, or whoever is a moderator on ripten.
1. When I played the beta, (I'm gonna be realistic here), I noticed that online battles were not laggy, but the graphics also weren't that great. Do you know if that was fixed?
2. I only own a Ps3 and I absolutely hate the 360 except for some of the games on there. So, do you guys think I should buy a 360 just for Gears of War 2? Because Gears of War has been looking really impressive to me, and I've always wanted it.

(davidGX :"Gears > Resistance, easily." )

Of course it is easy for you, you are a 360 owner that has contempt for either Sony or the PS3. not that I have a problem with it.whatever lets you sleep at night. I just consider myself fortunate that I can enjoy both games on their own merits without having to be forced to choose.

Hey guys, great comments from everyone. Thanks for taking the time to read the article.
Firstly, I’d like to remind everyone that The First Two Hours comparison are not the full reviews of the games. Look for the full reviews of Gears of war 2 by Chad and Resistance 2 by me later this week.

@ The Whaler. Love your comments. Always do.
@David GX, madpuppy : thanks for reading guys, always respect your well thought out opinions.
@Failzow , thanks for the comments, I’ve really thought about what you said.
@Renai Kakume and Hegesy: Thanks for thinking it was a fair article guys, that’s what I’m aiming for.
@ Dylan: SCREW THE LIBERTY BELL! Its not even in good condition.
Now, I’d like to address the some of the comments:

As for one of my criticisms of Resistance 2 being t it doesn't feel like 1951
I feel I tried to make the point that Insomniac could have used the time period more to their advantage, much like Bioshock did. I was really excited to fight futuristic aliens with archaic weapons, and I don't think I really got that. I did take into account that the weapons were modernized by studying the alien tech, but that doesn't account the fact that I think that Insomniac missed a chance to capitalize on the time period they chose.
That being said, remember that this article has to do with the first two hours of gameplay only. After the first two hours Resistance starts to inject the game with a little more nostalgia, which I REALLY appreciated. I still would have liked a tommy gun or drivin’ a 57 chevy though….

As to the Validity of Comparing Gears 2 with Resistance 2 based on their similarities
I think that FPS and TPS are sub-genres of the same genre, and Gears and Resistance are extremely similar in most every regard, therefore worthy of a good comparison.
If I were to compare gears with another game this holiday season I think I’d be hard pressed to find game more fitting that Resistance 2. Both gears and resistance are somewhat linear shooters, in which you are fighting an unwinnable battle against and unstoppable force with human and inhuman weapons. They’re both creepy action epic blockbuster games. Also both have you taking cover regularly, the walls just seem to be a bit stickier in gears. : )
The point is: They’re really similar in almost all ways but one game sits the camera behind your back and the other sits the camera behind your eyes. That doesn’t mean that I’m comparing Gone With the Wind with Predator 2. : ) and I don’t think it means a comparison isn’t valid or worth an article.
I think it really comes down to that, at least the first two hours, these games are both fantastic and it’s hard to except that their would be a loser in such a fight/comparison. But there really isn’t a loser, each games’ first two hours is a stunning success and Insomniac and Epic are two companies in which you can feel good about investing your entertainment dollars.
