Epic Gears of War 2 Patch Wishlist

The Gear loving crew over at G4TV spent their weekend “working” very hard in the name of better gameplay. Yes, this means they played lots and lots of Gears of War 2. The list after the jump outlines the issues they came across while playing single/co-op campaign, straight up multiplayer, and horde mode.
Bugs:
- Weapon Sliding – Weapon sliding (picking up weapons while moving) appears to be back and definitely ruins the map balance. The game is designed in a way that makes picking up a power weapon immediately usually results in a quick death as the pickup animation plays. Being able to grab the Boomshot while moving into cover hurts the multiplayer, especially since this was a bug in the first Gears of War…
- Voice Chat With Dead Players Between Rounds – This is a minor bug that we think will be definitely be fixed, but between rounds dead players cannot converse with players that survived the round. Again, this is a Gears of War 1 launch bug and we’re sad to see it crop up again. We’re not suggesting dead players should talk with the living while the game is being played, but they shouldn’t be restricted from chatting between rounds.
- Annex / King of the Hill Framerate – Games of Annex and King of the Hill tend to suffer from framerate drops and lag as the pile of body parts surrounding the capture point grows and grows. To us, this seems like there should just be a hard limit on the amount of gibs allowed at any one time.
- Invite All In What’s Up? - Hitting the Back Button in the What’s Up? Menu (which we love, by the way) sends game invites to everybody on your friend list whether they be online in Gears, online in any other game, and even offline… we’re assuming it’s only meant to invite friends currently playing Gears of War 2.
Removed Gears of War Features
Matchmaking is a very welcome addition to Gears, but we noticed some dropped features from the original that we’d like back.
- Map Rotation / Cycle – In the first game, private multiplayer games followed the classic map cycle format with a lobby before the game started. While Epic has made it easier to change up options without having to re-host a game it currently knocks everyone back to the pre-map lobby after each game. This drastically slows the action down as everyone is forced to reconnect to the host. Most of the time the host just hits start right away to choose the next map. Why not give the host the power to “Return To Lobby After This Game” or “Return To Lobby Now”, but bring map cycles back?
- “Ready” Icon – With 10 people in a private game (or even a party of 5 for Horde) it’s tough to tell who’s ready and who has stepped away to grab a drink or go to the bathroom.
Game Balance
This is a very subjective section, but we definitely stand by our initial impressions of the new game balance so far:
- Super Powered Chainsaw - We aren’t sure if its the new netcode or if Epic just really wants the Lancer and chainsaw to be the new shotgun, but it’s staggering how hard it is to shoot someone out of the chainsaw before they hit you right now. In our tests, it’s really only reliable to counter a chainsaw charge with a chainsaw of your own. We’ve started dropping our shotguns for power weapons now instead of the Lancer. Chainsaw charging is the new shotgun charging.
- Shotgun – The shotgun seems drastically underpowered at close range and is unreliable. Blind-firing it is inaccurate, but that isn’t our problem. At a few steps away, the shotgun sometimes takes 3 hits to down somebody. This is a big change from the original and we want our trusty shotty back. Epic already threw in stopping power to stop somebody from roadie running right up to you and one-shotting you, but was it really necessary to tone the shotgun down at the same time?
- Mortar – The mortar fires way to quickly and can be fired from cover. By the time the shells are falling, the mortar operator can be lining up his next shot while his targets scramble to a nearby building. We’re not saying that it should be removed, but the risk of use needs to be increased beyond a slow move speed, especially on maps like Day One where the mortar spawns on a catwalk with ample cover overlooking a giant open map… it’s placed well on Jacinto and Avalanche. Actually, just move it on Day One. Thanks.
- Grenades – Grenades seem much more powerful, which is fine, but we have an issue. Shooting wall-planted grenades takes too long and is often difficult from a safe distance. The explosion from a planted ‘nade is so quick that it’s nearly impossible to avoid if you get caught by one. We’d like to be able to clear them safely for having the foresight to check for them.
I’ve been playing campaign and horde mode for the most part, but from what I have seen, the G4TV list seems to be pretty accurate. If you’ve seen anything not mentioned on this list, feel free to share it in our comment section below.

I think notching up the shotgun is an option for epic, but it seems like the real hitch is how hard it is for a shotgun user to get a chainsaw attack to hitch up when you’re getting charged. That said, I think the one-shot glory of the blind-fire shotgun has gone the way of the buffalo.

There are also some glitches that can happen durnig campaign, and online multiplayer when it is lagging. I invited my friend to Co-op campaign last night, and when he came in to the game, he was crab-walking like you could in GoW1.
The same thing happened online in ranked, but we were playing wingman. There was a group of Europeans in the server (LAG) and the room was very glitchy. When I started the round, I was crab-walking, I was running fast, but when i shot, the bullets didnt damage the enemy, making it useless to be alive.
I agree with all of the above changes that need to be fixed. I was bummed when I tried using the shotgun, and point-blanking a person with a chainsaw, and they killed me first. Ridiculous on Epics part.
Also, the sniper seems to be unaccurate. You can have the cross-hair right on somebodys head, and it wont pop.

well am not good at explains things so here you go…..ok right now theres alot of complaining about shotty online multiplayer on gow2..alot of ppl…And i mean ALOT of ppl love gears 1 more than gears 2….theres rumors going around tat the shotty suks now n its just boring shooting the lancer across the map n camping on gow2..they say gow 2 is much slower than the first 1..n its like playing a whole new different game online….i really think the shotty should feel like gow1 n the wall bounceing should be faster on gow2 n they should lower down the stopping power cuz its way to powerful n also when sombody is running at u with a chainsaw they dont even cancle out when u shoot them on gow2..also the shotty does not even kill up close in one shot anymore.. n u cant even roll n shoot as fast as gow1 n u cant pull out ur weapon as fast as gow1….and personaly i think the smoke gernade should not throw u down it should blind u cuz of the exsplosion it makes..or u should at least get up way faster..but i know its base on the lancer n tat the problem.. Epic has a WHOLE lot of fans from gow1 why lose n dissapoint your fans on gow2.. i do not get tat….n its not just me its all over the internet n on xbox live n evryone i talk to….well tats just my opinion be free to disgree with me but am sure if Epic fixed gow2 they would have WAY WAY WAY more fans than gow1..

Shotgun cya later . Chainsaw sucks but o well. I just want them to change the multiplayer a little so it doesnt just base team making off of skill and rank but on connection speed to. They just made gears 2 for the casual gamer to get more money.

They need to fix how long it takes to actually enter a match… sometimes it takes 2 secs. and then other times (which is most of the time) it takes up to 20 mins its RIDCULOUS!!! but other than that everything on the list sounds about right…

GEARS OF WAR 2…… suckssss! i loved gears 1, and have gone back to it already after the enormous disapointment of gears 2, they wanted it more tactical.. so walking thru bullets an fire ( literally ) and chainsawing is tactical? the shotgun fires popcorn for all i no! its useless and unpredictable and its clear that they have tryed to make the game for casual gamers forgetting about the real gears fans who took the time to get good at it and earn it its reputation in the 1st place… im just glad i kept my gears 1 copy, gears 2 is money wasted as far as im concerned!

The ghost cam is nothing as good as the monitor in theater and forge in Halo 3. There are invisible walls everywhere and, if your camera is too low it can get stuck under the snow on avalanche. The shotgun has been nerfed soooo much now that all the chainsaw noobs are having a ball.

the chainsaw is the only thing stopping me from enjoying the multiplayer and the fact that the shotgun is crap. i’ve honestly had this happen to me tons of times i throw a smoke at someone they are on the groung i aim with my shotty right above them and they don’t die and they get up and chainsaw me.

It take far to long to get into a game, it should be quick and easy, and you should be able to stay with your team after the game is finished. Also i think that the shoot gun makes it to unreal when someone is coming at you with their chainsaw.

dont forget the damn sniper. i swear blindfires are nearly impossible is so retarded most of my clans probably just gunna go back to GoW 1. if epic doesent make some changes their going to lose alot of fans (which some are already back) since the fulltime snipers is like 30% of the people that play gears and it seems like theres always more sniping so they are screwed if they dont change it up. oh and fix the pop-shot!!

They’ve done away with the shotgun roll but now the new trick is the chainsaw roll super cheap kill. I like stopping power but please please do something about the lag and the lack of blind fire with the shotgun and boom shot

Okay, the shotgun sucks a bit, but if you aim, it’s better. The chainsaw does suck big time, because of the shots it takes to stop it,but more than half the time, it stops them in one bullet for me. Sniper doesnt need to change much, just the zoom needs to be taken back to gears 1 style, the blindfire thing isn’t that bad, do you seriously think it’s easy to blindfire a sniper anyway? The blindfire thing is gears 1 for sniper was good and bad, because people kept using dots, making it hit almost every blindfire, and it always made ya feel good when ya did it, now you have to actually aim, idiots. I have gotten many blindfire headshots in Gears 2, so I don’t care about it. You think they should take stopping power out? Sure it’s a pain in the butt to get used to, but would you rather have someone run into a building where a boomshot would be, or kill him before that happens? I agree with the matchmaking, host should get that option. Mortar firing too quickly? I honestly think it fires slow, because it takes 5-10 seconds for it to even touch the ground. The mortar cant get anyone within a building unless it has holes in the roof anyway. I never had a problem with talking to people between rounds after I die? Must be shitty connections that do that. Damn don’t even compare Gears 2 ghost cam to Halo 3, they didn’t want to be too much like it, so they gave you a great chance to take some good pics. Back to the shotty, there is problems with it, nto as big probelms as people make them out to be though, there has been numerous accounts where the blindifre shotty has been very accurate, just that no one pays attention to the way it fires after shooting. All these arguements are pointless, besides I’ve heard of a patch coming that’ll fix almost everything that you guys/girls are complaining about.

C’mon guys, really…is the shotty that important to you? If you want I’m sure Epic could release a game for you where you only have ONE gun and that’s the shotgun. And with this gun only one shot is needed to take down any number of enemies. I don’t know if you’ve noticed but the game was built around that lancer that you all so dispise.
When you have an audience of 5+ MILLION people (within 2 weeks of the games release) it’s going to be impossible to make every single person happy. And on that note, why would Epic release an exact same version of their old game?!?!?!
“Hey let’s rev up the graphics, fps and a few other things and then just re-release Gears 1″. And damn those guys at Epic for releasing a game that caters to the hard-core as well as casual gammers. Damn them for wanting to make the most money possible from their product.
HELLO!!! Isn’t that what every single industry/service provider/business accross the entire world STRIVES to do??
Really guys, it’s a business and just like a band releasing a new album you’re going to have some fans that love it and some that don’t NO MATTER WHAT! And if all you can complain about is some lag time getting into multiplayer and how the shotty can’t blow someone away in one shot then go and play duck hunt for an hour, it might make you appreciate what an awesome game Gears II is.

i honestly agree with everyone’s statements here, but I think they should be taken to somewhere where they will be heard, like over at the Gears of War 2 forums. So go post there about how the shotty sucks and everyone hates a chainsaw noob (which i do myself hate)

The only huge thing that has bothered me with online play is that the active reload doesn’t matter as much as it use to. Especially with the sniper. It use to be that with an active reload you could down an enemy but now it seems that with any weapon the active reload doesn’t give you any advantage. Also there is no way to stop the chainsaw, it seems that once the chainsaw starts its no stopping it hardly, even if you blast them with any weapon. Those are my comments.

everything there is reasonable except the bugs.
first off chad u dumb fuck the weapon slide isnt a bug or glitch its meant to be there its a fuckin button combination. That shit dosnt just land there.
second the glitching u refer too in annex and king of the hill well check ur conection ass hole.
and last but not least the voice chat between rounds wouldnt matter if they changed it or not because everyone joins a party chat.

im starting to get used to all the new features in GOW2 but the thing that really gets me pissed off is the getting droped from games problem. almost every game is 4 on 5 or worse and when no one gets dropped, its a really laggy game half the time. these problems need to be fixed or epic will lose a lot of their fans and online gamers

I agree the shotgun is unreliable up close and rarely does anything after 2 or 3 shots but I’ve been downed by people from a distance where when i shoot the bullets do nothing in 2 shots. You can see the bullets don’t spread at all they just are all clumped. I don’t understand why epic didn’t just try out the game and fix some of the bugs before releasing. How could you not notice something like the chainsaw not going down.

One other thing that I still cant understand is if I down someone ( usualy with a shotgun), after that person is down I die from his or her shot.!? It shows on the screen that I down them FIRST, then I DIE from ….. a … downd person who is able to pull a trigger!!!???????

Well… this game was very dissapointing. I already took it back and bought Call of Duty 5. I was expecting this game to be Gears 1 with better graphics and new weapons. But Epic made it better for those people who quit ranked in Gears 1 and did nothing but lancer and chainsaw.
The shotgun shoots the same spread everytime you shoot it. It shoots an x (><) everytime you shoot, active or not, unlike Gears 1 being randoms shots. Yes, maybe its easier when you aim with the shotgun, but while your aiming, your taking away the advantage of moving and shotgunning at the same time, making it easier to get chainsawed(especially when someone can take 3 shells before lowering the chainsaw).
There are SO many problems with this game it seems.. Epic just threw it together, got what THEY wanted, not the gamers, and put it out there without evening thinking about the Gears 1 fans. I bet Cliff is one of those lancer bitches that unloads a whole clip to down someone. And if you look on the leaderboards.. notice how there is over 2.5 million gamers in ranked on 1.. and in 2, under a million… PATHETIC EPIC.

the shotgun is more random then in the first one if you blind fire. but there are problems but once you get accustomed to it they arent that big of a deal you learn to play with them.

I agree with all of the above changes!!! But theres six things missing… They need to fix both the shotty shield glich and the host glich allowing them to go invisable… They also need to fix the two smoke grenade glichs, the one river to get in the boiler room thing in both the barns, and the smoke glich threw the security beams in security… another thing is the fact that the shooty is WAY to weak and if someone is charging you wit the chainsaw and you shot them wit the shotty it does nothing… the last thing is that the gameplay is way slower than the first gears and it needs to be speed up…

they pretty much covered all of the problems with multiplayer, i havent done much campaign so i havent experienced many problems but the problem that is the most anoying is the regestering, especially with sniper off-host, on host the sniper is great but off host its hard to get a shot while there moving if its not actived, and if it is actived it still isnt actived for a long time, the chainsaw should definetly be fixed first because it just aggrivates everyone but the people sitting behind the chainsaw, the shotgun should be fixed to its to overpowered at long range if your host and if you blindfire sometimes out of nowhere it just hits the ground which is kind of wierd so i think epic should also fix that

i dont really see many chainsawers anymore on gow2 but the main things i see wrong with the game is
Two-Piecing – this is the most annoying thing about this game (not counting chainsaw).everyone does it and overuses the thing. it is really ridiculous how epic made the melee button the best tactic in a cover based shooting game. plus when you get that chance every once in a while to get away from it you still end up getting downed cuz youll be weak by then.
The Sniper – i think this is dumb. you simply subtract from the sniper. you take away the 1 shot down which is fine, but you take away blindfire/popshot/zoomer also? when i try to do any of those, my bullet flies in various directions. and blindfiring while on a wall takes forever.
3 bullets in a boomshot – why epic??? why? i guess they just sat down and decided that “you know what? lets give the already overpowered ridiculous high power explosive weapon another shot to get people more mad.” its not neccesary epic

in response to jerrit- first of all, no the shotgun is not THAT important. but since half the time you play execution or a game with execution rules, you have to be close to kill someone. the lancer and the hammerburst are somewhat effective at downing someone, but your gonna need to get close anyway, where the shotgun is more effective. so basically, you need a RELIABLE shotgun. and as for keeping the game similar, YES THATS A GOOD IDEA. fix the problems with gears 1, add some more weapons and abilities (meatshield, planting nades), revamp the graphics…BUT KEEP THE SAME CORE GAMEPLAY. you cant keep the same gears fans if you completely change the gameplay…take halo 2 and 3 for example, h3 way better, same core gameplay, but equipment, new maps way better graphics new weapons and far less glitches. if epic had made a sequel in the same way, gears 2 would of been way better.
