Trophies Mandatory for all PS3 Games from Jan 09

Sony have confirmed to Videogamer that trophy support will be mandatory from January 2009- meaning that every game will have to support trophies, Sony’s answer to the Xbox’s achievement system. While many games have already been patched, plenty remain without trophies in this year’s lineup; it seems this won’t ever be the case again on the PS3. Following up a rumour that the system would require trophies, a Sony spokesperson told Videogamer that “Yes, from Jan 09 all games must have trophies.”
It seems a little too draconian, if you ask me. A game developer shouldn’t be forced into doing anything; I expect what we’ll see now is a slew of games with poorly thought-out trophies, and of course the inevitable trophy whores, buying crap games just to get easy trophies. We saw it with the 360, we’ll see it with the PS3. Nevertheless, it’s nice to see that trophies will be included with the good games as well as the bad ones- it’s not all bad news. What do you think? Let us know in the comments.

Care to explain?

Indeed. Quite the offensive picture there. Think it overstates the message by leaps and bounds.
Such a messed up picture you cannot even conceive how NOT funny it is.

Political correctness can kiss my ass. However, that picture is pretty messed up if you knew what it was about. I’m gonna go ahead and pronounce you ignorant on the subject matter and have hope for humanity, and your posterity.
Unless you knew exactly what you were doing, and in that case you’re just a tool.

Also, trophies are very poor substitutes for achievements.

well, it is an inappropriate picture…but it does beg the question, Is the Jockey Boy (restaurant) still open? and if so I wonder how good the breakfast is?

I didn’t mean to offend anyone. I could write an essay on why it’s not offensive, but I get where you’re coming from. Again, apologies.

Haha, good pic DavidGX.
And I’d have to agree with Sam that the picture wasn’t inherently offensive. I think the context of what was really happening when the picture was taken probably involved some racism, but the context in which is was used here was not racist. If we show an old woman getting hit in the face with a tennis ball, I don’t think anyone but the most sensitive of people out there would think that we are promoting “violence against old people”, and nobody would care about the context in which the picture was actually taken. It would just be a funny picture to 99% of you. While Sam’s pic was, unfortunately, not all that funny, I wouldn’t go so far as to say it was offensive either.
I personally feel that people see black and white as opposing forces and any conflict between them must be racist, and I think that line of thinking is, in fact, more racist than the actual picture.
Then again, what do I know. Even though my grandfather was black, I was raised as a whitey and I likely just don’t understand racism at all.

It’s just a picture. Posting it on the internet isn’t going to bring rampant, widespread racism back.
Lighten up.

Cookigaki does not understand what is racist about a picture of a PS3.
on November 21, 2008 10:22 am
It didn’t used to be just a picture of a PS3, though now that I think about it, why is all of that white space ganging up on the PS3. Is it just because PS3 is black? This picture is still offensive, please change it.

ooh! ooh! ooh! I got one! “this whole situation is GAY! gay as gay can be! just too gay.” let’s get back on track and focus on the issue at hand, the menu at the Jockey boy.

That picture offends me
Wait why does it offend me?
Anyways, I agree with you on how SONY/PS3 is handling the Trophy thing, I mean you’re right Sam no game developer should have to do anything, this is a way for SONY to lose GAMES, but I also agree that it’s good to see Trophies on both good and bad.
Nice article Sam
