Wii Sports Now the Best-Selling Game of All Time
by Dan Landis on January 4, 2009 at 11:27 pm

Wii Sports has surpassed Super Mario Bros. as the best-selling game of all time. With over 40 million units sold (obviously including bundles), Wii Sports is estimated to break the 50 million mark while resting comfortably at the top of the list. Check out the closest competition as we list the top 10 best-selling games of all time.
According to VGChartz, the top 10 numbers are as follows (in millions):
- Wii Sports, Wii – 40.52
- Super Mario Bros, NES – 40.24
- Pokemon Red / Green / Blue, GameBoy – 31.38
- Tetris, GameBoy – 30.26
- Duck Hunt, NES – 28.31
- Pokemon Gold / Silver, GameBoy – 23.11
- Nintendogs, DS – 21.37
- Super Mario World, SNES – 20.61
- Wii Play, Wii – 19.68
- Super Mario Land, GameBoy – 18.14
Coincidentally, the only non-Nintendo game in the top 15 is GTA: San Andreas, which certainly lends credence to the idea that maybe, just maybe, Nintendo actually knows what it’s doing.
Also, I have no idea why CliffyB (The Blaznats!) is playing Wii Sports in that picture.

It’s okay. SeasonedSalt just lay back and relax in Cookigaki’s bed, Cookigaki will make things better.

By… creating a game that sells more than Wii Sports?
on January 5, 2009 1:05 am
Whoa, that does look like cliffyb. I stared at his head so long that now it looks fake.
on January 5, 2009 1:07 am
Yeah, it does kinda. So fake, in fact, that I might as well actually put the Blaznats’ face on there. Or did I already? Hmmmm….

Wait.. this counts the ones that were sold with Wii systems?
Bullshit. Doesn’t count. Fuck that.

So basically Nintendo owns the world

You mean NES,Dan.
Funny how Mario Bros, bane of every mother’s life, has now been surpassed by Wii Sports, gthe love of every mother’s life.

Did someone change it? It says NES up there already. I was confused by your comment because I thought it said NES, I looked and it DID say NES, so now I’m just wondering if the world is going screwy or if someone already edited it.

I agree with DavidGX. These sales shouldn’t really count because most of those people aren’t buying the game, they are just buying the Wii which happens to have the game for free. How could Halo or GTA or MGS ever compete with that in sales? It’s just not really a fair comparison if you ask me.

thats crap
you can bundle any game with a console and call it the best selling game to date
on January 5, 2009 1:23 pm
Wii Sports does not get bought by ANYONE – it get’s shoved in your face when you buy the Wii console, wether you want it or not. It’s a good game………but i think it should be disqualified from “Official” sales figures.
What if Sony bundled a copy of “Driver 3″ with every PS2 console??? That game would’ve “Sold” well over 130 million units by now…..it doesn’t neccessarily mean 130 million people just HAD to have that game.

I say Solitaire wins. It comes bundled with every computer.

wht the hell?. i agree with the fact tht wii sports just shouldn’t count based on bundled sales. yet maybe nintendo does kno wht they’re doing. sry to brake it to ya “seasonedsalt”, but both halo and mgs were bundled as well with their respected machines, giving them more then their fair chance u said they didnt hav. so its not so much tht they didnt get a fair chance, rather, they just “NEVER” had a chance.

They were in bundles, true, but not from the very beginning and not with every system sold. Otherwise, Halo would have 25 million in sales instead of just 6 million. That’s the difference here, and I agree with SeasonedSalt.

I was under the impression that far more people purchased The Sims or World of Warcraft that these numbers show.
on January 6, 2009 6:54 am
Wow, now that was unexpected. But, it’s all Nintendo dominating this all time list, nothing from Sony or Microsoft…HAHA!

I don’t care if the how many bland games are sold to non-gamers as long as it doesn’t stymie the development of great, high quality games for the real next gen consoles.

Preach on, brotha man.

Once again Nintendo proves it knows the business world. Just so you guys know the original Mario Bros was a bundle and Sony along with MS have games bundled in with their system. The only difference is Nintendo bundles sell more it would seem.

nintendo does own the world
