Left 4 Dead survival mode details

by Sam Naylor on February 10, 2009 at 6:54 am

A while back, Valve announced some downloadable content for Left for Dead on 360 and PC. The announcement mentioned a new game mode to be released: “Survivor” mode. GameTrailers TV have revealed what this new mode will involve. According to the video, up to four players will attempt to set records on surviving hordes of zombies on 12 maps (whether the maps will be adapted from existing levels or brand new was not specified)- essentially, ‘who can last the longest against the waves of undead’. The DLC pack will also include Death Toll and Dead Air for Versus mode play.

I guessed it would be a “last man standing” type mode originally, but this is even better. the first thing I thought of was the mode in Timesplitters 2 where you had only a shotgun and increasingly big waves of zombies would shamble towards you. It got really hectic once you were up to about wave 20. With the speedy Left 4 Dead zombies in mind, this sounds like a brilliant new mode.

[Update] Valve just confirmed that the DLC will be free. Huzzah!

12 maps? thats awesome! What i really would like to see is some new guns… because theres only 5 (6 including the pistol) in the entire game. I’d love to see a heavy machine gun, flamethrower, magnum, barret 50, and maybe and mp5 or a p90 and an Ak! I think it would really improve the gameplay as i find it boring using the same 2 weapons the whole time. So this will be like the cod 5 zombie mode then? I think it will work well!

Yeah, new weapons would be cool. They’d have to spend a lot of time balancing them, making sure they aren’t too weak or too powerful, though.

On the other hand, they have a fairly adaptable game-balancing mechanic on hand in the form of the Director thing – you could have high-powered or even over-powered weaponry become available as a form of compensation for when you’re getting pasted (instead of a health pack, you get a minigun… or something).

Or when you’re doing well it could give you the big guns then throw a massive horde at you, just for the fun of it, like a reward.

Either way, new maps and game mode will be good stuff.
