No, you’re not dreaming: EA pulls Sims 3 DRM
by Sam Naylor on March 27, 2009 at 9:35 am
EDGE reports the impossible today: EA taking DRM out of a game. The Sims 3 will reportedly ship with just a serial code and no online activation needed, and no restrictive and unnecessary DRM. The head of the Sims 3 studio, Rod Humble, described DRM as “overly invasive”, and added that serial-based verification is “a good, time-proven solution” to basic piracy.
Obviously, the Sims 3 will be pirated, there’s no doubt about that- but in light of the Spore controversy, people are less likely to be downloading it simply to say “fuck you” to EA this time. In a way, I’m glad that Spore was pirated so much; it seems to have shown EA that DRM just makes things worse for everyone.

You never know, it might be able to. The specs for Sims games are usually pretty reasonable.

Also, I'm sure it'll be ported to every platform under the sun in a year or two.

Possibly, though I think they'll always recognise their base is the PC (hopefully).

I'm sorry Giant Lenin, but for the longest time I thought your avatar was a penguin. I have no idea why.

They aren’t pulling DRM. In fact, the serial code requirement is itself DRM. What they’re doing is pulling the variant of SecuRom that was used on SPORE. However, the variant of SecuRom that was used on the later expansion packs for The Sims 2 was the serial code one, and it still caused serious problems for a small but significant number of people. In other words, there may still be problems ahead.
