Microsoft responds to Obama’s Xbox Comment

In a recent speech at the NAACP 100th anniversary event, President Obama encouraged parents to “put away the Xbox.” Microsoft took the President’s slight condemnation and spun it into a positive.

The President remarked:

To parents, we can’t tell our kids to do well in school and fail to support them when they get home. For our kids to excel, we must accept our own responsibilities. That means putting away the Xbox and putting our kids to bed at a reasonable hour. It means attending those parent-teacher conferences, reading to our kids, and helping them with their homework…

-to which Microsoft answered:

We agree with President Obama that it’s a time for families to work together so that kids use media in ways that are safe, healthy and balanced. Xbox 360 is the only console gaming system that has a timer feature allowing parents to set time limits for their kids, as well as parent controls to enable parents to set limits on what their kids are playing and watching.

That’s some pretty crafty work from Microsoft there, turning Obama’s remark into an endorsement of sorts. Put away that Xbox, kids!

why do we think the president has any say at all in how much time kids play video games? who gave him that power? Last I checked Article 2 didn't say anything about presidential authority over video games, parental rights, or even entertainment for that matter…maybe that's part of the change the Obamaddicts voted for?

oh my god… im appalled people like you even exist. it is quite obvious that this statement has nothing to do with the actual Xbox or microsoft. but you whiny little freaks have to find an insult in everything. the man is telling you that it ISNT him, but YOU who is supposed to tell your children to turn off the idiot box once in a while (TV you semantic weirdo) he said xbox because it is the most recognized console, just like saying nintendo back in 95. He is right. it is idiots like you who rely on a videogame console to raise children, people like you are the reason that kids are so stupid. the reason that 10 kid in my 2007 graduating class couldnt read, but got sports scholarships and were passed for athletics. microsoft thought this was a shot, theyre just as stupid. no wonder vista was a P.O.S its a generalization. he doesnt think its microsofts fault. its the fault of people like you that children are so stupid. no more blaming the president or the video games. on the count of three i want everybody to take care of their own damn kids!

Well yea I feel that he is not deliberately picking on Microsoft/Xbox.
The way he said it seems like he was just giving an example. I mean, you can’t possibly expect him to list out every single consoles, gaming machines etc. right? Besides, the Xbox IS from the US, so it’s like an ‘icon’ for gaming that most Americans (especially parents) can relate to. To him, it’s just a representation, that’s all.
