Warfare Wallpaper Contest 2009

by Dan Landis on September 30, 2009 at 11:03 pm

warfare_poster_510px

With Modern Warfare 2 coming out in a month, we here at Ripten thought it might be just a tiny bit cooler to run around with an actual gun in real life instead of just in a game. I mean, right? That would be cooler, right? Okay, well we can’t actually do that for several reasons, not the least of which is that we just don’t trust ourselves not to shoot people in the face.  That’s what gamers do, right?

Echo1 has us covered with the next best thing: an airsoft rifle. If you don’t know what that means, it’s essentially a BB gun that shoots “harmless” plastic pellets. This one we have here should look familiar to you if you’ve played pretty much any shooter in the last 15 years, and it’s full scale and made of metal. How about you peoples show us some lovin’ and maybe you can get yourself one of these bad boys for FREE! Read more…

Splinter Cell Gets 2010 Release Date

by Dylan Duarte on September 24, 2009 at 2:04 am

I'm irritated too, but calm down!

It was announced a while back that Splinter Cell: Conviction was being pushed back into 2010. Hell, it was announced last year that the game was being delayed until this year. But we’ve finally got a solid release date in February 23rd, 2010, so mark your calendars. Mark it with pencil, though, in case the game gets pushed back.

God of War Collection to Include GoW III Demo

by Dylan Duarte on September 24, 2009 at 1:15 am

godofwar

The God of War collection smashes onto the PS3 in less than two months featuring the full version of the first two games in the series. While that was enough to make me run out and preorder it (I actually powerwalked), the pot has just been sweetened: the collection will also come with a voucher to download the E3 God of War III demo. That’s right! There is a God. Of War. And he’s on his way.

Three Flight of the Conchords songs coming to Rock Band

by Sam Naylor on September 22, 2009 at 10:34 am

The above video shows the guys from the brilliant Flight of the Conchords promising that three of their songs will be coming to Rock Band in the future. Even though I’ve just told you all the game-related news about the video, still watch it. They’re funny guys.

I hope that they don’t ignore their old album. Tenacious D didn’t release Tribute, their finest song, until last week, despite having one of their new songs in Rock Band 2 as default. Business Time and Humans are Dead are great songs and should be in Rock Band, damnit.

PS2 and Dreamcast games coming to PSN?

by Sam Naylor on September 22, 2009 at 6:01 am

barbrady

Destructoid have noticed this post on NeoGaf detailing a leaked document from SEGA. The document was leaked and includes a lot of goodies. The biggest piece of gossip is that “SCEA wants to sell all PS2 titles on PSN (GTA Vice City/Sonic/etc)”. Similarly, “If [SEGA] provide a list of DC (Dreamcast) titles SCEA will let us know which ones they’re interested in having exclusively.”

Yes, you may now say “wow, I hope this is real”. Journalist Jim Sterling notes that he “tried the download link and it certainly comes from Sega’s own PR site,” so this could be legit. I certainly hope so. Go to the links to see the full list, or hit the jump. Your choice.

left-4-dead-mod-is-truly-terrifying

Left 4 Dead mod is truly terrifying

by Sam Naylor on September 19, 2009 at 5:33 am

I knew this would happen. From the day I set eyes on the Teletubbies, I knew that they would overthrow their masters, breed, and stalk the Earth, attacking all those who stand in their way. This vision has been recreated in the above video. A friendly warning: don’t show it to your kids.

Honestly, this is one of the scariest things I’ve seen done in Left 4 Dead. Forget seeing a Tank roar round the corner at you, the sight of the dead, bleeding eyes of these sickeningly colourful beings is just too creepy for me to hande. Not to mention their futile groans: “Tinky Winky…” I’ve been wary of the Teletubbies all my life, but this just tips it over the edge.

Need for Speed: Shift PC demo out now

by Sam Naylor on September 18, 2009 at 2:55 pm

nfsshift

It’s not often you get a demo that’s packed with content, but EA have announced that the PC demo for their attempt at a serious racing game has been released and can be downloaded here. The demo includes a lot (for a demo) of cars, and even an unlockable Zonda:

• BMW M3 (E46)
• 2008 Dodge Viper SRT10
• 2006 Lotus Elise 111R
• 2008 Nissan GT-R
• 2006 Pagani Zonda F (unlockable)

A PS3 and Xbox 360 demo is also coming early October, or of course you could just go out and buy the game, if you’re made of money.

heres-why-you-should-be-looking-forward-to-borderlands

Here’s why you should be looking forward to Borderlands

by Sam Naylor on September 18, 2009 at 12:54 pm

In case you’ve never heard of Borderlands, above you’ll find a video that will show you exactly what it is. If you’re following the game, the above video will show you a load of great-looking gameplay footage from the game. It’s not often that an RPG gets my attention, but almost everything about Borderlands appeals to me, and this video only fuelled this.

I’m a fan of RPG games, but I really not a fan of turn-based strategy or button spamming. That’s why games like Fallout 3, Oblivion, and now Borderlands appeal to me. My inner obsessive loves the loot collecting, and the part of me that likes to shoot things loves the first-person shooting and masses of guns. Look forward to our review when the game is released- I know I am!

Witcher 2 footage leaked

by Sam Naylor on September 18, 2009 at 8:59 am

As you probably know, some of us at Ripten are big fans of The Witcher. This means that it is with great pleasure that I present to you some leaked footage of the sequel. The video is marked “internal” and obviously isn’t for public consumption, but who cares, eh? It looks bloody great.

CD Projeckt RED have issued a statement saying “We can’t and won’t try to deny the facts… Currently we are looking for a potential publisher (or publishers) for this title, and this leak is an uncontrolled side effect of that process.”

I liked the Witcher, but I didn’t have time to play it through. This one looks even better, and it might even make me want to finish the original so I can enjoy the sequel.

Bioshock 2 coming February 2010

by Sam Naylor on September 18, 2009 at 8:46 am

2K Games have today announced that the hotly anticipated Bioshock 2 will be releasing on the 9th of February 2010. The release date will be the same for all platforms: PC, PS3, and Xbox 360.

I’ll quickly take this opportunity to remind our PC gaming fans that Direct2Drive are offering the original Bioshock for just $5/£5 for the next few days. Get it if you haven’t played it, and finish it. Then maybe you’ll be as excited as the rest of us that it’s only six months until the sequel arrives. Actually, when I put it like that, six months sounds like ages.

Ripten Radio Winner of the Week: Scribblenauts

by Jonathan Zungre on September 18, 2009 at 8:16 am

scribblenauts06152

By now you’ve probably heard of Scribblenauts, but if you haven’t you should know that it’s being hailed as the Savior of All Organic Life, a.k.a. one spot lower in a gamer’s mind than Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2. Scribblenauts allows you to write any noun on the DS screen and that word will appear in the game. Ridiculous, I know. Click to listen to me drop the awesome bomb on 3 unsuspecting radio show hosts in my Video Game Winners and Losers of the Week segment. Were they as impressed as gamers are? Read more…

Gamer unseats The Happening as the worst movie I’ve ever seen. It’s a disgusting, abrasive movie made by someone who doesn’t understand or appreciate games and can only see the negative in the youth and culture that surround them. Read more…

half-life-2-modder-replaces-all-sounds-with-his-own-voice

Half-Life 2 modder replaces all sounds with his own voice

by Sam Naylor on September 17, 2009 at 2:50 pm

Yes, this is as brilliant as is sounds. This mod, made by user “-Trase-”, does exactly as it says on the tin- replaces all the sounds (well, nearly all) with sound clips he’s recorded himself. I particularly like the machine-gun fire noises he’s made.

This is why I love modding communities so much. It’s not often you play a game where the guns literally go “pow” and the bombs literally go “ka-pow”. The mod also works in Garry’s Mod, so you can play around with the sounds all you like. You could listen to those incredibly satisfying submachine-gun or shotgun noises forever and ever.

Secret of Monkey Island: Special Edition 50% off on Steam

by Sam Naylor on September 17, 2009 at 11:51 am

monkey-island-sale

The remake of LucasArts’ classic adventure game The Secret of Monkey Island has been bumped down to just £3.49/$5 on Steam today, in honour of International Talk Like a Pirate Day, which is coming up on the Nineteenth. That’s what I like to call a good deal which you should probably take advantage of.

I bought the game on release (hindsight is 20/20), and I can confirm that this is a quality remake, and the art, while perhaps not perfect for everyone, is very high quality and the voice acting is absolutely fine. You can switch at any time to the classic style, too. I heartily recommend this, ye land lubbers and all that.

Australia forbids sale of Left 4 Dead 2

by Sam Naylor on September 17, 2009 at 9:22 am

l4d2sotd

The Australian games ratings board have refused to classify Left 4 Dead 2 for release. Because the game features a lot of blood and gore, it is only suitable for those who are 18 and over. Because the Australian ratings board (the OFLC) is ridiculous, they do not have an 18+ rating. Therefore, Left 4 Dead 2 is banned from being sold in Australia.

Because of the stupid and backwards system in place in Australia, the game must either lose all of its sales or cut out most of the mature content in order to secure a 15+ rating. I know that many are campaigning for a separate ratings board for games in Australia, and I wish them the best of luck- even if all they can hope for is an 18+ rating for now, that’s a start. As if they don’t suffer enough from price hikes and late releases.

Bethesda announce Fallout 3: Game of the Year Edition

by Sam Naylor on September 17, 2009 at 7:58 am

fallout3goty

Similar to their earlier Game of the Year edition of The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion, Bethesda have announced that a version of Fallout 3 that includes all of the DLC released so far in the price of admission. Undoubtedly this will be the definitive version, just as it was with the Oblivion GotY version.

The game will release on October 13 and will cost $60 for the console versions and $50 for the PC version. Bethesda have also announced that the DLC for PS3 is coming very soon. Broken Steel is coming on the 24th of September, followed by Operation: Anchorage and The Pitt on 1st October, and then Point Lookout and Mothership Zeta on the 8th. Good news all round, then.

Uncharted 2 spams Twitter so you don’t have to

by Sam Naylor on September 17, 2009 at 3:43 am

unchartedtwitter

It has transpired that Uncharted 2 will include support for Twitter updates. Players can input their account details and have the game automatically update their feed when the player connects to multiplayer, completes a chapter, earns a Trophy, or reaches a level milestone.

Of course, this will be a complete annoyance for everyone involved, except perhaps the PR department at Naughty Dog. Not to mention that in about a year when Twitter stops being the popular thing to do, this feature will look even more ridiculous. Hey, why not have a feature to write a Livejournal or update your MySpace page?

Stay Classy, Tecmo

by Sam Naylor on September 16, 2009 at 11:07 am

This is an advert for Tecmo’s upcoming PS3 game Ninja Gaiden Sigma 2. In the game, you can shake the Sixaxis to make the boobs of one of the characters shake. Obviously this is the biggest selling point of the game, so Tecmo are advertising that, and that alone. Never mind the fact that Ninja Gaiden might actually have good gameplay. Dood, there’s boobs in it.

No-one tell Tecmo that Hideo Kojima already did this a year ago. He was a little more subtle about it, though.

Pink Floyd would consider a music game based on the band

by Sam Naylor on September 16, 2009 at 6:22 am

animals

Despite drummer Nick Mason’s comments that “It irritates [him] having watched [his] kids do it – if they spent as much time practising the guitar as learning how to press the buttons they’d be damn good by now,” he has expressed that the band could be interested in a Rock Band/Guitar Hero Pink Floyd game. “I think we’d consider it,” he told the BBC. “I think everyone’s looking at new ways of selling the music because the business of selling records has almost disappeared.”

Seems like he’s only in it for the record sales, but to be honest, I don’t care. A Pink Floyd Rock Band game would, to me, be one of the best music games possible. In fact, just a spin-off as simple as “Rock Band: Progressive Rock edition” would be brilliant. Nick Mason lives near to me, so if they say no to this I will go round to his house and give him a good talking-to. (this worked for Daft Punk in DJ Hero, there’s no reason why it can’t work twice).
