Several Halo: Reach Weapon Screens Leaked on MLG Forum, Return of Master Chief?
by Chad Lakkis on November 5, 2009 at 4:18 pm
Oh the irony in life. A message board which states that it is powered by the Xbox 360 and Bungie serves as a home to several images featuring what the poster, “Tom Morello”, claims to be leaked Halo: Reach in-game weapon screens.
And now, the page scrolling list of leaked images for your speculative pleasure…
Highlights from the leaked screens and info mentioned on the forum reveal a HUD that Morello says lists out things such as teammate names and player perks like cloak, sprint, and hologram. Sprinting will involve the use of the LB button and cloaking will not only hide you from plain sight but also jam your radar and take you offline in terms of communication with your team on Xbox LIVE. Hologram will create a mirror image of your character forcing your enemy to either guess correctly or live long enough to kill both of you.
Morello claims that the photos were taken from inside of an office at Microsoft Headquarters, adding that his initial reasoning for snapping a few pics was to share the existence of a new “Battle Rifle” with the MLG community.
The biggest question that still remains, in my opinion, is whether or not this game will feature the return of Master Chief as a playable character. As you can see in the image below, it does appear that the hand shown topside up does have similar plated armor to that of Master Chief. Of course it could just be a random Spartan. If that’s the case, you can thank the Bungie writers and their self serving need for varied character development.

Is this shit for real? Your guess is as good as mine. If real though, the logic of “no such thing as bad press” says this leak could serve to a be a good thing for the Bungie squad as it will surely steal a small amount of the spotlight currently beaming heavily on Infinity Ward and their impending Modern Warfare 2 release.
What do you think? Are the screens real? Are you a fan of the Halo franchise? Sound off in the comments section below.

I hope these pics are from an old build, They look like hl/Portal graphics, The environment looks great though and i hope master chief does make a return :D.

Yea, Graphics doesn’t look impressive, I mean take a look at the mountain on the first image:/ Looks like 6th gen game style graphics.

Those Boxs in the first screen arent dev kits, wouldnt it most likely be in one? i know when i tested games for microsoft most of us had dev kits.

colin makes a good point. maybe this whole thing is just a really good fake?

“The biggest question that still remains, in my opinion, is whether or not this game will feature the return of Master Chief.” *sigh* Yet another journalist that doesn’t do his research. The answer is “Yes”. Spartan ‘John’ 117 AKA The Masterchief will be featured in Halo Reach. Why? Because Halo Reach is a prequel to the first Halo game, go and read the book, the Masterchief will be featured as well as other spartans such as the marksman/infiltrator ‘Kelly’

Sorry Reuben. I will clarify. My question was whether or not he will be playable as the main character. In fact, I’m going to go ahead and update my wording so I don’t cause any further heartburn in Halo Nation.
on November 5, 2009 7:11 pm
Even if these are real it is NOT John117 aka MasterChief he is NEVER on reach itself if memory serves, the closest he gets is the space above reach and then Reach gets glassed.

Haha, I can’t believe people are eactually judging the “graphics” of the game in these photos. I wasn’t aware that so many gamers know nothing about a game’s development cycle, and rarely do any research on a subject before making a comment towards it. Let’s include these three obvious factors:
1. Halo: Reach is still in development.
2. These photos are incredibly blurry, which leaves little or no room to judge visual aspects.
3. We don’t even know if they’re f*cking real.
It blows me away that so few of you have considered the factors above, as they only require a dose of common sense. I could see some of you not knowing that Halo: Reach will feature a brand new graphics engine. Which means even if these photos are real, they’re either from early devlopment or completely fake. If it’s Reach, it’s still in Alpha, or the part of development where features are still being designed and integrated… which happens to be RIGHT NOW -_-
I guess my real question is… who here isn’t under the age of 15? Remember the importance of logic and reasoning skills. Believe it or not, they help with logic and reasoning-related situations. Like realizing when someone is being sarcastic, and subtley insulting you before the end of this sentence.

I agree with Sanzee. I am so sick of the idiots on N4G, especially the hardened, rabid Sony fanboys running their mouths about the graphics. “Weep xbots, Reach can’t touch KZ2 or UC2″. Good God. The Game has a good 11 months of polish and shine and DEVELOPMENT to go. and If some of the fanboys actually read around before yapping off, you’d know that Bungie just started adding textures and other aesthetic goodies to the Reach levels. (Bungie Update 10/23/2009)
So franky I don’t care what anyone says. I will reserve judgement till I see further evidence instead of jumping like an idiot with the rest of the idiots onto the “Hate” train.
on November 5, 2009 10:33 pm
Sanzee you make a good point but your comment makes alot more sense written in this format:
I can’t believe people are actually judging the graphic-appeal of the game in these photos. I wasn’t aware that so many gamers knew nothing about the game-development cycle. In addition, it seems that doing research on a game before making a serious claim towards it is longer important. To measure the validity of these photos, let us consider these three basic factors:
1. Halo: Reach is still in development.
2. Halo: Reach will feature a brand-new graphics engine with cutting edge visual technology.
2. The source photos are incredibly blurry, which leaves little room for sound (fair) judgement.
4 We don’t even know if they’re f*cking real.
These factors should be more than enough to help you reach a sound conclusion. And the answer is… trick question, there are two answers!
(A) Bungie loves to tease fans by slowly revealing more fancy game material. In Bungie’s games, the first non-trailer material are often blurry, but conveniently blurry; in that nothing important (i.e. spoilers) is visible on screen. They’re getting us excited.

@revistinha1
Actually another set of identical images were posted to Neogaf. I opted to use to use those instead as they aren’t doodled on with white MS Paint lettering.
on November 6, 2009 2:49 am
I would say, its a new spartan, not Master Chief. In the end spartan takes of his battlehelmet and revelation! It is a she! Metroid anyone?
on November 6, 2009 3:40 am
1.jhon was on reach 2 times
2.jhon will be the main character
3.dose’nt matter anyway the point is spartans are going to be everywhere!!!!
4.the new graphics engine will blow ur fuggin mind away!!!
on November 6, 2009 4:02 am
Well if any of u read the halo books, its quite clear that master chief is in the game..and if i remember right reach is where the Spartans were trained and its one of man kind’s last strongholds before earth..
on November 6, 2009 4:04 am
and as for master chief being playable, i dont think the chief makes an appearance on the planet, since he has a major role to play in the defence n destruction of the Orbital MAC Gun Platform..

Bhahahaha… GOLD mate… GOLD!

These shots look like test levels for sure. Most of the elements in these picutres look like a prototype, just past the ‘white box’ phase. ‘White boxing’ is esentially there to test a levels layout for gameplay reasons. Once the level gets the OK the art team will perform a beauty pass over the level.
Infact some of those shots show noticable stretched textures on some of the ‘rock’ landscaping. One of the characters on screen does not have a shadow also. So, the lighting solution is not complete in these shots.
So, from these pictures, it’s sound to deduce that not all the tech is present and that most of the scenary is placeholder.
Personally, I can’t wait for Halo: Reach. There’s some serious talent behind this project and I’m sure Bungie is going to go out on a Swan Song with this product.
Good Luck Bungie :)

From someone who actually IS old enough to drink, good job on the research. Every SPARTAN (from the same period) wears the same armor. You found evidence of MJOLNIR armor. Hence, OMG IT MUST BE MASTER CHEF OMG!!!!
Sigh.
on November 6, 2009 6:23 am
ok first off masster chief was at reach just not dirt side he was in orbit taking care of bussiness of nav data in oni stealth ship along with 2 other spartans dirt side of reach 25 spartans
on November 6, 2009 7:33 am
Ummm… Ok, so you’re saying it might be MC because of the armored glove… Yet he was part of the Spartan program, which turned out many super-soldiers, who would have worn standard issue armor, which would have looked the same… Especially parts like the gloves… Why do people always read too much into stuff?
on November 6, 2009 8:54 am
I have to say that I like the feel of the pictures. Everything seems large. Which as a Halo1 lover is what I like in my Halo universe, massive massive levels.
Wheres the lefty gunner?
As long as the worlds are Huge and gameplay tight I could care less of how Halo’s graphics stack up…
on November 6, 2009 9:31 am
Looks like it could be real. the br looks similar to Halo CE. What is the Needler crossed with a Carbine rifle. I really hope that isn’t in the game. But looks like it could be real. John 117 was at Reach, along with many other Spartan IIs.
on November 6, 2009 11:13 am
Hmm if you ask me the graphics look much better than that of Halo 3 from what I can tell. Just look at the models they appear to have much more detail in them althoug the textures do looka little flat. But then again the pics are off-screen and this is still in early development so who knows.
on November 6, 2009 12:34 pm
Q: Ummm no Chief was on a pelican with Linda in the sky of Reach. Reach was all but done with when Chief was awoken in his cyro pod, so you sir are a moron. And I like the pics, it’s a feel of old and new.
on November 6, 2009 2:43 pm
Its pretty fake if you ask me.
I recognised some assets from the great game call CRYSIS. Must be a mod or something.
on November 6, 2009 2:52 pm
Why are you comparing the glove with a mk6 armor, wouldn’t the cheif still be in mk5 during the course of this game?
on November 6, 2009 7:17 pm
Sanzee:I hope you understood my comment, I love Halo :D Its my “guilty pleasure” as a ps3 owner :), i Have the origional xbox and still play 1 and 2, Im not judgeing these graphics, Meerly hoping that these are from an old build, as they dont seem up to scratch with the latest jazz, e.g, Modern warfare 2, mass effect 2 or uncharted 2. I know 360 can do better, which is why i hope these are “old” screens and that the actuall game will feature a revampped, technologically advanced engine. By the way, Im 17,
on November 7, 2009 4:29 pm
The master chief was with Linda and James(he got owned instantly) above Reach trying to destroy the circumference, so I’m thinking he might be playable for a level or two..
As for the armor, it kinda sucked in halo 1 so hopefully it will look like MK6 in halo 2-3
on November 18, 2009 5:43 pm
Waaaay early build, just look at panel six.
