The Penguin, Two Face, Catwoman, & Black Mask Join Joker As Batman: Arkham Asylum 2 Villains?

batman-arkham-2-joker

Geoff Keighley posted a tweet nine hours ago asking his followers if they happened to pick up on any of the villain reveals in the Batman: Arkham Asylum 2 trailer revealed on Spike TV’s Video Game Awards show last night. This prompted me to watch the trailer a few times over to see if I could spot any of them myself.

In addition to Harley and the Joker, who are clearly visible towards the end of the clip, the freeze frame images and animations snapped below from the VGA trailer seem to point to the possible additions of The Penguin, Two Face, Catwoman, and Black Mask.

The first image looks to spell the word “ICEBERG” on a building structure. I originally thought this was a reference to Mr. Freeze, but Demi (who apparently knows way more about the Batman franchise than I do) told me about an Iceberg Lounge operated by The Penguin, so it seems that this is most likely a reference to him.

iceberg-mrfreeze

The second comes by way of three dimensional lettering on a brick wall that spells “Sionis.” The Black Mask’s true name is Roman Sionis.

sionis

The third is a “We Want You” style poster sporting what looks like a coin flipping character with a partially disfigured face. It’s blurry even after Photoshop enhancement, but this sure as hell looks like Two Face.

two-face

There’s at least one other that we haven’t been able to identify yet, so if you were able to spot any other villain reveals, feel free to share them in the comments section below.

The fourth villain Keighley may have been referring to could be Catwoman. The animated gif I just put together is based on a portion of the trailer that features a cat perched high above the streets on a fire escape. This was brought to our attention by reader rynethomas. In the theme of things, this does seem like a very good indicator for Catwoman in the game.

cat-woman-baa2

While we seem to have spotted four villains, that’s not to say there aren’t more leads hidden in the video. Other possible clues are a sign that we think reads “IDEAL HARDWARE”, a greenish yellow banner hanging far down the street, and several shadows that appear to be fighting down an alley just before you enter Joker’s building. The video itself is below.

Reader Feedback Updates: I’m inserting pieces from the clip based on readers suggestions below. This will be ongoing as more feedback comes in.

The first reader update comes from paulstrife and highlights the guards shadow near the Asylum. The thought here is that the funky shadow movement has something to do with Shadow Thief. After watching the clip a few times, it seems that it may just be shadow distortion caused by the police car spinning red and blue lights.

baa-shawdow-animation

I originally mentioned the “IDEAL HARDWARE” sign above, but didn’t include an image of it because I had no idea what it referenced. I still have no clue what it might mean, but I’ve inserted it below in the event someone else may know what it hints at (if anything). Reader oedipusopus found the following information on Wikipedia about the Mad Hatter which references hardware.

“He is an insane neuroscientist and developed hardware that can control the brain and induce hypnotic states, and often uses hats or other headgear for mind control.”

This is the best lead we have so far on the hardware sign and it seems pretty plausible to me. If you have an alternative theory feel free to add it in the comments section.

ideal-hardware

The image below is an animated gif of the shadows in the back of the same alley the cat is overlooking on the fire escape. At first it looks almost like Batman holding up an enemy, but then the thing in the air seems to transform into something else.

alley-shadows

Here’s the mask a few of you have noted in which drops down from above in the clip. I’ve brightened it up to try and make any detail on it a little more visible. Someone suggested that it looked like the old Joker henchmen masks, but I looked and couldn’t find anything that matched it. That’s not to say it couldn’t be Rocksteady’s own personal spin on the object.

drop-mask

Again, I have absolutely no idea what the highlighted banner in the image below hints at if anything, but its colorful enough that it catches your eye at the far end of the street. If any of you readers think you know what it is feel free to chime in.

I wonder how 'open world' this game will be….?

  • http://www.ripten.com Chad Lakkis

Well, the original was pretty open, so I'd assume this will continue down that path.

  • auronix

Look at official game site. There is a person with hat which is dirty in a half. Also hand with gun. It must be Two Face.

  • paulstrife

Does “Ideal Hardware” or “Gotham General” ring any bells?

How about that large clown face that falls in the door way, that scene seems out of place.

The shadow to the guard near the gates at the start seemed a little odd. My guess is that the villain is “Shadow Thief”.

  • http://www.ripten.com Chad Lakkis

Interesting guess. I did notice the “IDEAL HARDWARE” sign but didn't catch the Gotham General reference. I'll watch it again but neither ring a bell.

  • http://www.ripten.com Chad Lakkis

Interesting guess. I did notice the “IDEAL HARDWARE” sign but didn't catch the Gotham General reference. I'll watch it again but neither ring a bell.

  • paulstrife

The blood pack had some text on it that seemed a bit too clear. Like they wanted us to see it. That's where I got the Gotham General reference from. That Doctors coat seems a little out of place. Any Doctor villains that are symbolic for their coat?

  • http://twitter.com/dylanduarte Dylan

I noticed the really clear text on the blood pack too, but I can't find any Batman villains that have anything to with Gotham General. The only thing even remotely close is Dr. Strange, but he was a shrink, and that's a bit of a stretch anyway. I feel like we're missing something obvious, as the other reveals were pretty clearly focused on.

  • paulstrife

What about Blaze? The huge fiery scene outside the window. The doctor coat?

From wiki: “Dr. Jane Blazedale was a nuclear physicist who quit her job at Gotham University when her project for boosting nuclear energy output was shut down due to safety concerns.”

  • rynethomas

If you look on the Arkham forums they have a photo from the trailer of a cat on a fire escape which is most people think could mean Catwoman is somewhat involved.

    http://i49.tinypic.com/25sy3js.jpg

    Zoom in on the circle

  • http://twitter.com/dylanduarte Dylan

ooooh, I would say that's the best guess yet.

  • paulstrife

Yeah, there is something there. It looks like a cat.

I'm sticking with the “Shadow Thief” dammit! XD

  • http://www.ripten.com Chad Lakkis

I'm going back into the video now to add some of the suggestions you guys pointed out to the article above.

  • difo9

That is definitely the Iceberg Lounge…you can see lounge spelled backwards right around the time you are looking for the cat. Catwoman seems very unlikely to me…see that Catwoman loves the Batman

  • paulstrife

Yeah, the shadow at the start was a bit of a stretch. Although there are a lot of shadow actions going on throughout the whole clip.

Although there seems little to no reference to Shadow Thief, I'm not ready to give up on my first guess. lol

  • Chewieondis

I'm no expert on the series but I think the Gotham general pack was just for the joker cause he sounds like he has a disease, Harley quinn used to be a psychatrist for him so having some kind of doctor related items make sense to me

  • http://www.ripten.com Chad Lakkis

Alright guys. I added the Hardware sign, the guard shadow, and the cat on the fire escape. Considering no one has really made a solid case for the hardware sign and the guard shadow looks to be jumping due to the flashing lights on the police car, the only one that seems like a slam dunk is the cat adding up to Catwoman.

    Keep the thoughts rolling in.

  • oedipusopus

“Jervis Tetch, formerly a research scientist, is completely smitten with the works of Lewis Carroll. As his criminal name indicates, he takes the appearance of the Mad Hatter from Alice's Adventures in Wonderland. He is an insane neuroscientist and developed hardware that can control the brain and induce hypnotic states, and often uses hats or other headgear for mind control. (There was also, briefly, a second Mad Hatter who liked to commit crimes with hat-related themes, but he has not been seen in two decades, having only one appearance after nearly being killed by the original.)” – Wikipedia article on Mad Hatter.

Could that have to do about Ideal Hardware?

  • paulstrife

That seems like the logical conclusion. Great job with the updates.

That guard shadow clip looks a little less ordinary a bit after the portion you captured. After looking at it a few more times, the guard turns without the shadow being affected. It could just be a small issue with the technology, and nothing suggestive, but it would be more fitting than the clip posted.

The first game had references to the Riddler being in this game, along with Ra's al Ghul. The Riddler has a small part when you finish all his challenges where he gets arrested. He might just come back with more challenges, but who knows. As for Ra's al Ghul you see his body in a morgue drawer. When you visit again at a later time the body is gone.

  • http://www.ripten.com Chad Lakkis

Thanks oedipusopus. I'll add the info you found to the image above in an update. It sounds like a very good possibility.

  • http://www.ripten.com Chad Lakkis

That's true, and while I'd enjoy an encounter with the Riddler, I also liked the way Rocksteady worked him into the game in the original. It was a nice bonus that added to the game in its own way.

  • rynethomas

    http://dc.wikia.com/wiki/The_Carpenter

It's one of Paul Dini's character who wrote the story for B:AA, she's affiliated with the Wonderland Gang consisting of Tweedledumb and Tweedledee so it is a strong possibility that it could be them

  • oedipusopus

I also don't think there isn't any significance to this, but I found a fleur-de-lis on a building, the scene where the guy gets thrown out the window. There is a villain of Batman's known as the Cavalier, who is known to wear a musketeer outfit.

  • http://www.facebook.com/nicolaivernaccinipetersen Nicolai Vernaccini Petersen

Guys, if the blood pack or “Gotham General” is a reference at all, it is most asuredly a reference to the dear dr. Thomas “Tommy” Elliot an old childhood friend of Bruce Wayne's. They grew apart, and after several strange incidents in his life Tommy blamed and started hating Bruce Wayne more than anything else in the world. Years later Tommy became a surgeon and in the years after the murder of Bruce's parents, Tommy befriended a lot of the people who would eventually become enemies of the Batman: Edward Nigma, dr. Jonathan Crane and Peyton Riley (who'd become “Sugar”, the second Ventriloquist) among others.
He later became the sociopathic, gunwielding supervillain known as Hush, and frequently allied himself with other notorious villains of Batman's rogues' gallery: the Joker, Two-Face and Poison Ivy and others.

But the “Ideal Hardware” is still as much a mistery to me as it is to you… O_o
It could be something to do with Humptey Dumptey, this big, dumb loaf who has a tendency to destroy things just to put them back together, or “fix” them as he calls it. But no, that would be quite strange for such a, somewhat, unknown villain to feature in the game, most of all if he'd be a boss.

  • piggydash

Hey Chad. Do you think the shadow at the end of the street could be the ventriloquist!? It looks like someone holding up a doll.

  • http://www.myspace.com/shapingscarlet Sluggo

    Come to think of it…..

“Ideal Hardware” must be a reference to the Key, another of the lesser known foes of Batman. True, he is a more “dark and gritty” type of villain, so he could fit perfectly in the game's atmosphere.
And my gut tells me that DC have poked Rocksteady a bit about introducing villains who do not appear at all in the “Riddler Challenge” character gallery in the first game.
Most of the villains that have been mentioned in this forum or hinted at in the B:AA2 trailer appeared in the character gallery: Two-Face, the Penguin, Catwoman and Black Mask, and even Humptey Dumptey and the Mad Hatter.
But since The Key wasn't mentioned I think he could make some kind of appearance.
But… I still think that The Key as well as Shadow Thief, for that matter is a too uknown, if not obscure, c-list villain. Batman has one of the most popular gallery of villains of any fictional character EVER so I can't imagine why Paul Dini (or whoever will write the storyline) will come up with such low-caste, and frankly weak villains.
Yes, both Bane, Scarecrow and Croc were bosses in the first Arkham Asylum, and a lot of people were quite confused as to why such prominent villains as Mr. Freeze or Catwoman, or the before mentioned Two-Face did not have any roles in the first game.
That, dear friends, is what is called “writer's slyness”: if all the big villains were bosses in the first game, what would become of a Arkham Asylum 2?

  • http://www.ripten.com Chad Lakkis

I wouldn't rule it out. He seemed pretty big and reminded me of batman though, and the in air stuff looked like a transformation.

  • http://www.myspace.com/shapingscarlet Sluggo

    What about…. Clayface?

I'm just gonna leave that one hangin'.

  • http://www.ripten.com Chad Lakkis

That could make sense too Sluggo. Especially since the primary shadow seems so big. It's pretty safe to say that the rest of the clues are not as cut and dry as the four that point to Catwoman, Penguin, Black Mask, and Two Face.

  • http://www.ripten.com Chad Lakkis

Every clue found in a trailer like this has significance. The entire thing is one big cluster of clues that was meant to stir interest and have us speculating.

  • http://www.myspace.com/shapingscarlet Sluggo

It's the new Shadow of the Colossus – and it's a trailer! :P

  • http://www.ripten.com Chad Lakkis

That's actually not a bad guess either. I'm looking forward to revisiting this post after more information is announced about the game to see how close we all came with the predictions.

  • FamilyGuyPS3

    That cowboy is not Two-Face
It's Jonah Hex. Look him up, he's a DC Comics veteran though I only know of him because he seemed interesting in one episode of Justice League Unlimited.
They went to the past chasing after some time traveling art&ect. thief and met a cowboy there with a half melted face named Jonah Hex.

Google him, I doubt he'll be in this game though since 1. he's a good guy and 2. he doesn't live in Batman's time-line.

  • kratos123

chad i think rocksteady is trying to fool us with 2 face becuase it isnt him try this guy Jonah Hex he looks like the guy in the poster they wanted to trick us there really a lot of smart people working there

  • orobourous

Looking closely at the “IDEAL HARDWARE” sign it seems that the L is a bit scratched out, this may just be the camera angles and lighting. Yet “IDEA HARDWARE” would further point towrds the hatter don't you thnk?

  • http://www.myspace.com/shapingscarlet Sluggo

A really good guess, but there are just two things that don't add up: first, it's the wrong side of him which is scarred. I know that is quite a little detail and it may seem indifferent at first, but if you think about it wouldn't make sense if either Rocksteady or DC for that matter, “reversed” a character, and especially not when it's a “half-half” kind of character. There's always been a somewhat “artist's interpretation” in the Batman franchise, more so than in any other superhero universe, meaning that the Joker might look like something in comic A by artist A and look completely different in comic B by artist B. So it is true that an artist could actually “flip” a character so that his left side becomes scarred instead of the right one, but this leads me to the second reason as to why it can't be Jonah Hex: it is absolutely not logical.
Think about it: one of Batman's oldest, most popular foes Two-Face is a “half-half” character; why would either DC or Rocksteady go all that way to make the fans believe he appears in the game, just so they could make the villain another c-lister at best, DC character pop up and take the role? It's highly illogical and highly unlikely. I don't want to *SPOIL* anything, but Two-Face is even mentioned in the ending of the first game, so why wouldn't he be the obvious choice?
Besides, you might not be able to see his face on http://www.arkhamhasmoved.com but you can most definently see it's Two-Face on the posters in the trailer: he's even got a coin instead of a gun!

  • woolley61

If you go to the web site arkhamhasmoved.com you can clearly see that it is Two face by the different colors of his suit and his hand.

  • derges

there are 3 doctors in batman Dr Strange, Dr Destiny and the most resonable choice would be hush who is a plastic surgeon after the last game the jocker didnt look to healthy around the face and hush is one of batmans most dangerous enimies since he knows who batman reli is.

  • jorreno

The neon sign might be something to do with the Riddler, as its green and the first letter appears to be 'N'…for Nygma???

As for the shadow in the alley, Killer Moth is a man who transforms into a moth. Same could be said about Man-Bat, but he was one of the few villains who didnt have his bio in the first game.

  • the_ironist

I dont think that the shadow thing is a man-bat or clayface.
If you watch the trailer in normal speed and look closely you can see that someone (maybe Batman) ward off a punch with his left hand and then strikes with his right.

  • http://www.facebook.com/DoubleDose Derek Dockendorf

People are also forgetting about Dr. Death. But I too think it is Hush. One thought about the Ideal Hardware shop is that it is an anagram. The only thing that sticks out is that the letters can form Edward as in Edward Nigma the Riddler. A couple of the phrases I came up with are “Hire Edward” (doesn't really make sense and that is by losing the scratched out A and L) and “I hear Edward”. All of these sounds promising.

  • http://www.facebook.com/sean.lowery Sean Lowery

Gotham General is just the hospital the Joker was recovering at or where he stole the blood/medicine keeping him alive or from transforming. The lab coat is likely just a reference to how he snuck in/out and may even be an homage to Heath Ledger's scene from Dark Knight featuring the same.

  • dilly17

its definatly not killer moth, he was spotted dead hanging in a web in BAA1, and do u guys think you are making too much out of the trailer? just think that its either funny and clever what you guys are doing, very interesting,

  • jabbanut

could it possibly be clayface, i saw him in the first batman arkham asylum, and if you watch the clip closley, something (clayface) transforms from a small object to what looks like a normal person.

  • Motoroller

The third image to me looks like it could be Man-Bat-with how the shadow transforms upwards and “flies away”. The neon sign has to be Riddler.

  • Ekko

    Hush is a doctor…

  • Johnny

i think it might be clayface

  • Sparks

From what I can tell, and I may be wrong; there have been no references to the film in the game (Other than of course, the comic book material) The game isn't a product of the movie, as we know, and if the independence from the film has been kept thusfar, why would they throw that away now? With all this hinting and such in the trailer that you clever folks have discovered, I doubt that there would be a reference to the film. If not a hint at something, than maybe even a hint at something not related to the film, but not likely

  • lukas1045

because the shadow is clayface because he can transform into batman or anything

  • http://twitter.com/Nordwegian Simen Engebretsen

It feels like we're going through the same comments over and over. I mean, we've had like twenty people saying that the shadow in the alley is Clayface “Because he can transform himself”. Would be nice to get some new observations now and then. Just sayin'.

  • jack

the yellow and green banner could be robin as he wears yellow and green

  • thecatinaction

Tho I'm probably just making something outta nothing, I couldn't help but watch the blimp in the top left-hand corner of the screen, right before the train passes by. Since it stuck out to me, I figured I would research blimps in the Batman series. I found Colonel Blimp makes an appearance in Batman #352. Tho I know this is HIGHLY doubtable, as I heave never even heard of him till now, I just thought I would give everyone another thing to think about. Also, I found that Scarecrow used a blimp in an old Batman and Robin game, I believe, to spread his gas over Gotham. That may be a thought, too, seeing how it could lead to total khaos in Gotham. I just know that blimps have been used a few times in the Batman series, so it could possibly be a clue to somebody. Plus, the way the lights are flickering in the blimp just seems a little odd to me. I don't know, what do you all think?

  • Monkeyboy1138

I think that maybe people are getting a bit to excited about these shadows. The 'transforming' shadow is just a thug beating someone up as it is the exact same animation reused from the shadow of a thug beating someone from earlier. The other shadow outside Arkham is just a light distortion thing from the police cars.

The falling mask by the Sionis building is just a Black Mask mask with Joker-y stuff added on, if you look at the one either side of the word Sionis, it's the same basic deal.

  • harrisonundead

Quite early into the campaign, just after the first venom infected inmate fight, you have to go back on yourself and look for clues to where The Chief is. As I was heading towards my objective I walked into a side room which was hard to spot as the top half of the door was closed. Inside there was nothing. Until I looked at the inside wall next to the door. There was a poster saying: ICEBERG LOUNGE (There is a picture The Penguin on the poster)
    GOTHAM CITY
    Oswald Chesterfield Cobblepot
    Opening Night
    FRI SAT
    July 13 July 14
    P 8pm to 2pm P

Oswald Chesterfield Cobblepot is The Penguins real name. I believe that this plus the Iceberg Lounge shown in the Arkham Asylum 2 trailer confirms that The Penguin will be a character in Arkham Asylum 2.

  • TurtleKing

You might want to add Scarecrow to that list of possible villans for arkham has moved. In of the end of story mode they show a box of titan floating in the bay or river and out of the water a hand with needles at the tip of the fingers comes out and grabs the titan box. This hand wearing a glove with needles is clearly and only scarecrow who somehow managed to escape from being eaten by Killer Croc.

  • bushellg

The shadow at the end of the lane grows in shape to be that of Clayface, I have studied that section of the clip.
All the posters appear similar to that of Two Face and the sign itself at the beginning of the Arkham Has Moved website is split into two. In the same signs though the writing at the bottom looks similar to the word riddle.
The green sign at the end of the street appears to be a yellow J and another letter on a green background. This could signify either the Joker or Jervis Tetch.
I didn't see an reference to the Riddler in the clip but both the Iceberg Club and the cat on the fire escape strongly refer to The Penguin and Catwoman.
Also in the clip you don't really se Harley's face, you see it from the side when she kisses the Joker but then she turns away from the camera when it gets closer and then you only see the back of her again.
Is their any reference to good guys in the clip? We have focused on villans but is there a posiblity of Nightwing or some one similar making an appearance?

  • liamabby

hold left click on pics and it tells u what they are

  • TurtleKing

scratch what i said about scarecrow in the ending of Batman Arkham Asylum, turns out there are alternative endings and its randomized to either be Killer Croc, Bane, or Scarecrow. I do wish though that scarecrow would make another appearance since I really loved the way they made a different form of the game with him.

  • will

you can see catwoman in the left eyeslot of the mask that falls down

  • will

because you can see mr.freezes cell in the game more than likely that means mr.freeze will show up instead of penguin ps the penguin is the worst villan in the history of batman mr,freeze is actually cool putting the penguin in is just a waste of a good level also rumor has it the word wonderland appears at the 18 second mark of the video when ur going up the train thing so that could mean mad hatter will apear but he sucks toowil

  • viking347

the gif wheres it looks like “batman” is holding something in the air and it transforms could be a showing manbat (it might be me but on the gif it looks like a bat in the end) but when i look over the whole video it looks more like a man who is hitting “batman” or is throwing something at him, though as i keep watching that part over and over it looks like his throwing something from his own body onto “batman” and also looks (just when your about to see the poster with two face) that his body got bigger in a instance which could be clay man

  • viking347

theres a gate sign on the left in the start of the video that says “no thru road” could that mean something?

  • king saam

On trailer look at the coat/labcoat next to jokers blood supply thing. Scince when has Joker wore a coat?

  • Gobolo

Maybe Joker impersonated a doctor to escape?
Alternatively it could be a referance to Titan being in the game as it was made by Doctor Young…

  • Jack

Yes turtle king Scarecrows hand does appear at the end of the Arkham Asylum 1 games campaign and snatched some Titan, sometimes. Occasionally it is Killer Croc or Banes hand that snatches the Titan, (can you imagine croc on Venom). I have finished the game 7 times and the First time i got Killer Croc, the Second time Scarecrow, 3rd i got Croc again. 4th i got Bane. 5th Scarecrow, 6th Killer Croc and 7th Bane.

For Proof go to the following links to view these cutscenes

  • Nomadical

Cool links. I didn’t know that.

  • Jimmy

I was thinking about “IDEAL HARDWARE” has anyone tried anagrams i got “HAIL EDWARD” with “A.r.e” remaining and “HI REAL EDWARD” with “A” Remaining. For those of you who don’t know EDWARD is THE RIDDLER’S real name. This theory places riddler with a bigger part, but I’d like to see if other people can come up with better anagrams that don’t leave remainders.

  • http://www.ripten.com Chad Lakkis

Interesting Jimmy. Hadn’t thought of looking at it that way.

  • ryan

i think its a nod to E3 because thats when e3 starts and arkham 2 will most likely be there, or a penguin teaser at the show.

  • Crow aka “Jimmy”

Wow chad i really appreciate that you took time to respond to my theory once again it’s only a theory but it’s also possible to get “Riddler” out of it but it leaves alot of leftovers the only reason it makes me think of riddler is because of the green backdrop of the sign but i only know a little Batman Trivia so i’d love to hear if any hard core readers can come up with a better solution

  • Arkham Weapon

The posters, Icebergue Lounge, SIONIS and the cat clearly show that Two-Face, Penguin, Black Mask and Catwoman might show up.
About the “IDEAL HARDWARE” detail…from the information that is shown it trully seems Jervis Tetch, the Mad Hatter could show up.
The shadow “getting bigger” could be Man-Bat opening his wings or Clayface changing his form.
Also the big ammount of fire could indicate Firefly, but also could not.

  • Jacob

if you stop the trailer on the we want you poster as its turning white. just before the screen completley whites out it brightens up the poster and it makes it easier to see

  • creyz

    anybody think about nightwing?

  • karlosss

The character that grabs the TITAN box at the end, dependd on the difficulty level you completed the game on on that instance.

  • Angus

If you pauce at momemnts when u see the poster..such as 0:32, you can see that one side is definatly distorted. The twoface reference is strong

  • Angus

If you pauce at 0:35 you see that ‘Lounge’ is written on the banner. (it is backwards) This confirms the ‘IceBerg Lounge’ reference

  • Eric

The banner could either be an N or a M. If an M, it really could be the Mad Hatter or Man-Bat. If its an N, Im not sure.
