Unrealized Burnout DLC Plans Included Traveling Backwards Through Time

No, this is not a satirical post. What I’ve written above is factual, assuming Criterion is not lying to us all. In a post from earlier this week, they share some details about what could’ve made its way into Burnout Paradise and those details include driving on the moon and time travel.
The plans start innocent enough, with some planes, helicopters, and boats. Criterion wanted players to be able to see Paradise City from the sky and complete in aerial challenges. There was also talk about a series of islands, and if they had gone that route, you could’ve raced boats to and from the islands.
There’s also talk of underground racing with tunnels and open challenge areas. They also thought about pitting motorcycles vs cars, but thought that may get too chaotic.
And then there’s the moon. They actually modeled the surface of the moon and it was drive-able. There would have been lunar challenges that involved zero gravity. There would have been a rocket pad that would have launched you up there after reaching a certain rank or completing certain challenges.
Now to the good stuff: time travel. The idea was that a portal would have opened and you could drive through it and be transported through time. One of the ideas discussed was the Wild West, but apparently some members of the team thought this was going too far.
And maybe the time travel stuff is going too far, but I think the moon idea is awesome and I wish more developers would consider DLC on this grand of a scale.
