David Jaffe Says 2010 God of War Reboot Would Feature Zelda 64 Open World Elements

David Jaffe, the man behind the popular God of War franchise, loves to interact with followers on his Twitter account, but what he apparently loves even more is the open world approach of Zelda 64. In a series of tweets, David reveals that while he loves the God of War franchise in its current state, if he were to do it over today, he would include more of the “Zelda 64 structure.”

“Zelda open world is different than GTA3 in terms of player guidance. Which is why I love ZELDA open world more.”

“If I were to do GOW now, I would do GOW meets ZELDA 64 structure. Much more interested in immersive games now vs. scripted experiences. But I think Zelda open world+GOW puzzles/combat=pretty good mash. Many other games have mash’d that up. Not to imply I don’t love GOW. I DO very much. But I just would not design it the same way now, in 2010.”

Jaffe then responds to a question asking him to name some examples of games that have mashed God of War elements with Zelda 64. He states that Onimusha 4 tried and failed, and believes that the upcoming Darksiders game is attempting to utilize the mix.
