Square Enix Character Switching RPG Battle System Patent May Offer Glimpse Into Tetsuya Nomura’s Unannounced Games

Square Enix Game Director, Tetsuya Nomura, has already revealed that he and his team are working on several unannounced projects, and a recently unearthed battle system patent may give us a look inside the game mechanics of at least one of them.

The patent, filed by Square Enix with Nomura listed as the inventor, revolves around a RPG character switching battle system that allows the gamer to switch from their primary character to various other characters in battle for a set period of time. The switch grants you the abilities of your newly acquired character, and those abilities transfer back to your primary character once the time granted to you for that specific character switch expires. Sound complicated? Well, it sure was a mouthful.

According to the diagrams made available, the transfer capability is not limited to spells, as one example illustrates HP (hit points) as fair game. In addition to the character switching details, the patent also outlines things such as camera angel movement, auto targeting, and a platform design preference geared towards “portable gaming.” No specific platform was named, but a diagram of the PSP was included.
