EVE Online MMORPG.com’s Game of the Year

Despite being Released in 2003, EVE Online has been voted 2009′s MMO of the year by MMORPG.com. The game saw two major expansions this year, adding new ships, wormholes, better fleet organisation, and lovely pretty new planet designs. Another thing that happened in the world of EVE this year is that I started playing.

I really enjoy EVE. For Sci-Fi fans who love the idea of a consistent world they can go into and fly spaceships around, EVE is amazing. The economics of the game’s market system are another selling point; everything is bought and sold by players, and the price is set by the supply and demand, not by the developer of the game. It even saw a stock market crash this year.

I’m not even sure if one website saying that EVE is good is really news, but it is MMORPG.com, and that’s pretty big in the MMO world. Also, I really like EVE, and wanted to write about it a bit. If you’ve not played it, there is a trial version you can have go at. It certainly hooked me. One pointer, however: join a corporation. You’ll learn incredibly fast, and make some good buddies along the way. Isn’t that what social gaming is all about?

I played EvE for a few months, and enjoyed it . . . but the lack of linear content gave way to boredom . . . doing mining ops for my corporation and running boring repetative missions just got old . . . other than constantly trying to get a bigger and better ship by leveling up skills and making money. . . I really found there wasn't much else to do but float around space . . . while the player controlled open world is nice . . . some story elements and linear progress would make it easier to both get interested in and stay interested in EvE online.

Yeah, a lot of people have trouble getting into EVE. I guess I was just lucky to find a good corp relatively early on, who taught me the way.

I've heard a lot of good reviews about this game before but I never really tried it. I might take the trial version this weekend and see where will I go from there. I hope that I'll be able to join a corp as early as possible.

PVP (player vs player) combat is the way to go in EVE. It's anything but linear and the scope for different types of play is immense!

For example I am currently specialising in Stealth Bombers (Small fragile ships but ones that pack a hell of a punch and can be flown with a cloak), and EWAR (electronic warfare) ships that can pin down and render other ships helpless. Of course those of you into guns are well catered for. Combine these ships into a fleet and you have real tactical combat situations that get the adrenaline running (more so than when I used to play a lot of FPS!).

I'll confess than Sam is a member of our corporation Dropbear Drive-By, and he has nailed it that a good corporation who do PVP (as well as all the other stuff) is the way to play EVE. The Only Way.
