Latest Metal Gear Movie Update Cites Franchise Success As Main Reason Big Screen Adaptation Won’t Get Done

The latest not-so-positive update from the “hold your breath and wait” Metal Gear Movie universe features a quote from Producer Mike De Luca:

“… the problem with a lot of these adaptations is it’s such a huge franchise for the video game company. A movie can only hurt. If the movie’s great, you’re probably not going to sell more games. It’s such a separate thing. The franchise being as big as it kind of helps the movie… I’m not sure the movie does the same thing for the game.”

I guess you can’t fault the logic from a business standpoint strictly focused on games and movies, but what about the other outlets that could see a boost in revenue from a successful movie? I’m no industry expert but don’t mega movies prompt the mass production of everything from action figures to lunch boxes?

Sure there’s risk in the movie flopping, but after we personally interviewed David Hayter at GDC, I for one firmly believe that a Metal Gear movie with him at the helm would be a huge success. Try Googling “Metal Gear lunch box” — nothing. Now try Googling “Twighlight lunch box” — scary isn’t it? Come on guys, find a way to get this deal done … do it for the lunch box!!!
