GameSpot Scores Super Mario Galaxy 2 Perfect 10

A press release from CBS Interactive Corporate Communications hit our inbox not long ago. Why you ask? Because they own GameSpot. And in case you’re thinking to yourself, “I wonder who owns Ripten?” the answer would be “Me and my lint filled pockets, that’s who.”

Anyway, GameSpot was kind enough to share this monumental occasion with the outside world because they’ve only given out six perfect ten scores in the past twelve years, with Super Mario Galaxy 2 upping the number to seven.

The complete list of GameSpot awarded perfect ten scores are below, and those of you interested can read Tom McShea’s review right here.

  • Super Mario Galaxy 2- May 21, 2010
  • Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots – June 13, 2008
  • Grand Theft Auto IV – April 28, 2008
  • Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater 3 – October 29, 2001
  • Chrono Cross – January 6, 2000
  • SoulCaliber – August 9, 1999
  • The Legend of Zelda : Ocarina of Time – November 23, 1998

Part of me will always wonder whether or not Kane & Lynch could have been lucky number seven back in the day had that pesky Jeff Gerstmann passed the review on to a true fan of … what exactly was that game about again? That reminds me, here’s a great satire piece one of our former editors wrote in 2007 that breaks down the review point scale for aspiring writers. It still makes me chuckle today.

On a more serious note, you can expect to see our Super Mario Galaxy 2 review up shortly. Rangebar’s got a ritual he follows to a T every time he’s tasked with reviewing a new Mario release. I won’t share all the details, but what I will tell you is that part of it involves him prancing around in red overalls screaming “It’s a me, Range-io!”
